CNN News said:
...Officials said four people were known dead and at least 164 had been rescued after the ferry Sewol swiftly listed and then capsized off the southwest coast of South Korea.

Nearly 300 others are missing, authorities said, but the exact number of passengers aboard the ferry was unclear amid the confusion of the rescue effort.

The bulk of those aboard were students and teachers from Seoul's Ansan Danwon High School heading to a four-day trip to Jeju, a resort island considered the Hawaii of Korea. More than 300 students and more than a dozen teachers from the school were on board, according to officials.

It was not immediately clear if the dead -- three males and a female -- were students, teachers, part of the crew or other passengers from the ferry.

The ship sank within two hours of its first distress call, which came just before 9 a.m., the semiofficial Yonhap News Agency reported. It's not known what caused the incident.

Helicopters, military vessels and fishing boats swarmed to the scene to help rescue passengers.

Survivors told CNN affiliate YTN that announcements on board the ferry, which also carries cars and shipping containers, ordered passengers to remain where they were after the ship began to violently list.

Others told passengers to jump into the water. Rescued student Lim Hyung Min was among those told to jump.

He told CNN affiliate YTN that he heard a loud bump just before the ship began to list and several off his classmates were flung off their feet. The crew ordered them to don life jackets and jump into the ocean, he said.

"I had to swim a bit to get to the boat to be rescued," he said. "The water was so cold and I wanted to live."

Water temperatures in the area are between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit (about 10 to 13 degrees Celsius), CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said...

So many students missing, so many desperate families waiting and hoping for any information about their loved ones...

Hopefully more survivors are found.

Oh dear... This really is horrible. My thoughts and wishes are with these poor people and their families. I hope many more people are found and saved safely.

It really is horrible. I've got things to do, but I can't help but check the news once in a while to hear about anything regarding the missing people. I really wish they'd hurry up with the rescue and hopefully they find survivors.

This is a tragedy; the situation looks dim. So far, no survivors have been found out of the missing people, and more than 30 people are confirmed dead. Around 250 people are still missing, most of them high school students. It's already over 80 hours since the ship sank, and no information regarding anyone inside the ship. There's also been false information going on the internet, and there has been so many wrong announcements from news reporters that many are confused and upset. The divers are putting themselves in danger - the weather is bad, the visibility is low, and the currents are too fast. Yet they're doing everything they can to find the missing people.

I know time is running out, but still, I hope there are survivors. I hope there are survivors rescued soon, and I hope the divers return safely as well.

EDIT: Over 50 people are confirmed dead. The divers are risking their lives for any possible survivors, but if they keep this up, it could lead to another tragedy... it's heartbreaking. I hope they return safely.

It's almost a week. More than 80 people are confirmed dead. Over 200 people are still missing. Hopefully, there's survivors, waiting to be rescued... but in reality... I don't know.

May the victims of this accident rest in peace.

Death toll now over 100, and more than 150 people still missing...

I'm at a loss for words. So many people are still praying for survivors to return - so many families are still waiting. Hope must not be given up.

:\

and today, Bolton wore black arm bands for it, as a request from our Korean player, Chung Yong Lee. Was a nice touch.

This truly is terrible, every time the death toll rises, I find my head just shaking in sadness. This truly is a tragedy and I hope all the families that lost someone from this and even the survivors find some peace after this event.

It's been 14 days since the accident occurred. Death toll at 205, and still 97 people missing.

May the victims of this horrible accident rest in peace.
