What's the fewest pokémon necessary to complete any of the main games? For example, has anyone completed the game with just their starter (very unlikely)? How about just two pokémon? Or three?
And what's the best strategy to use? Say you're going for just three; which starter do you get, and which other two?

I remember once on my Leafgreen game I defeated the Elite Four with just my Blastoise, Pigeot, and Crobat (I know they're all weak to thunder, but I didn't think about it, and I managed) I was amazed at that

Honestly depends on the game, alot of luck, patience, and the least I've ever done was with 4 and that was in sapphire and firered.

Edit: If you are just reffering to the elite 4 and champions, just tell me what game ur talking about, and but the new ones I can tell you some good teams to use, and yes, with just 3, or even 2 if you got alot of patience.

I remember I beat the e4 in Sapphire with my Aggron with Thunder, Surf, Iron Tail and Take down, Sceptile with Leaf Blade, Giga drain, Focus Punch and Protect and Ludicolo with Surf, Strength, Blizzard and Waterfall (It took out all Champion Stevens pokemon in one hit with Surf and one hit Cradilly with Blizzard)

I think they were referring to the start all the way to the finish. I know that the fastest time for Red used only 3 Pokémon, only one of which was extensively used.

ok, I went through my sapphire game only using my sceptile starter, a whalelord and an aggron and a ludicolo (mentioned in my above post)

I went and looked at some of my games, and Im guessing that u are looking at the latest ones(I hope), so I'll just tell the teams.

Sapphire- Charizard
Sceptile
Crawdaunt
Glalie

FireRed- Charizard
Raichu
Golduck/Kingler(done with both)
Executor

Sapphire(league battle)- Charizard
Sceptile
Glalie(same charizards pp for steven)

FireRed(league battle)- Charizard
Sceptile
Raichu(take out gyrados)

give charizard dragon claw, flamethrower, wing attack, and whatever else you want. I gave him blast burn when I could.

sceptile should get solarbeam, dragon claw, ariel ace, and leaf blade

I usually don't catch many pokemon... in fact my party is of 5 pokemon or less for a large part of the game, with a total of maybe ~10 I actually use and 20-30 I've caught...

Anyways if you plan the types, abilities and moves and train them perfectly, I'd say you could easilly go through the entire gane with only 3 active pokemon. Maybe you'd have to use a few extra ones for HMs though.

FireRed: start with Squirtle, catch Oddish for Cut, beat game with just those two.

Emerald: start with Mudkip, catch Slakoth for Strength and Rock Smash, beat game with just those two.

Pearl: start with Piplup, catch Bidoof/Bibarel for HMs, beat game with just those two.

The biggest problem I have is walking all over the regions because I don't feel that you need Fly.

I used four of them up to at least the 6th Sinnoh gym. I think I had a Luxray, Staraptor, Torterra(sp?) and Floatzel.
Emerald: Swampert, Swellow, Gardevoir and I forget what else I had... Might have been a seldom used Rayquaza.

I've heard of people trying to beat the game with just one Pokemon...even a Magikarp.

unless it was hacked like crazy, it's completely impossible to clear the game with just a Koiking. HMs aside, not to mention a horribly weak attack stat (which even at level 100 leaves something to be desired, and this is in-game I'm speaking of), it can't even touch Ghost-types with its moveset (though with Platinum, it does get Bounce now). I guess there's Struggle, but good luck wearing a Koiking's PP down to zero (Splash's 40 PP will especially give you problems before you reach the move deleter)... hell, even if you did survive wearing out its PP, it'd be a miracle to survive Struggle's recoil afterwards. Better be packing a LOT of Potions.

I've heard people try to beat the game with just Caterpie or Weedle, too. I've never tried it myself, though.

i did my sapphire with a swampert, swellow, and a makuhita...

I've cleared Gold with ONE of the following - Ampharos, Feraligatr, Typhlosion, Furret. It's not that hard in the second generation. Trying to beat it with an unevolved pokemon is another story, IMO. I had briefly attempted a Sentret-only run in Gold, but stopped at the elites due to fear of rage.

I plan to try one of the games using only Mondo's Pokemon. That would be Tauros, Ditto, and Meowth. And a few HM slaves but they won't battle. I doubt I'll beat the game but it'd be fun to see how far I get. ^_^

Did you use only one for Kanto as well or just Johto?
