Fic Club of the Month?

Would you want a "fic club" here?

The other mods and I have been discussing the idea of a "fic club". Essentially, we would all choose a fic every month and discuss it (how far in we are, what we think so far, speculation for the next episode, etc.)

My question is, is anyone interested in this idea? (particularly to spotligfht an award winner or a lesser known author)

I think I suggested this somewhere before...

But anyway, I think that's a great idea. The Workshop's biggest problem is lack of interactions between the members (or maybe it's just me), and this is a great idea to increase activity.

I think even beyond general discussion, we would sort of try to go chapter by chapter and discuss individually like a real book club does. Discuss the assigned chapter(s) for that week, character interactions, our predictions, our likes and dislikes, etc.

I like the idea, in m perspective getting lesser known writers know would make many people's days if that makes any sense at all.

I'm not familiar with Book CLubs, so maybe the thread could have instructions and a few examples in it?

This sounds nice and all, but I think it's generally known whose stories would be picked out if those sort of clubs would be established, sadly. Would there be any system of picking the stories out (perhaps alphabetically?) or similar to that manner? For example, there are writers whose stories are not well known and there are those whose stories get a lot of responses and readers and are somewhat widely popular. I don't find it hard to imagine the popular fan fictions being showcased in these clubs more rather than the other ones.

That's just my honest opinion.

You're right. We'd need to have a good system for deciding what fic it was that was to be read.

It would also be important to ensure that all participants hadn't read the fic in question at all from the time it became the fic club's fic. In that sense, it seems to me only natural that the most popular fics would be unlikely to be chosen.

So I'm assuming the moderators would be the ones picking the stories. Wouldn't that turn out like the awards, where the moderators' stories are not eligible?

It wouldn't necessarily be the mods. I mean, we'll want as much involvement from the users of the Workshop as possible so it might even be worth making it something that is voted on by the people who intend to be active.

Of course, that is my own personal speculation, I don't know how it'll turn out.

If the users are to be included in the determining process, it could lead to some personal decisions, such as picking their own or their friends' stories. I suggest having the mods pick the stories for two months, then the third month is up to the users to decide which moderator fic should be discussed.

2 Months, Mods pick a user's story.
1 Month, Users pick a mod's story.

These are interesting ideas but it could also be possible to ignore who is a mod and who is not and just allow everyone involved to decide together out of any fic?

But still, personal decisions could come into play. The point is to give attention to the lesser-appreciated stories, not a friend's story. If everyone is allowed to elect/vote/nominate, that would drown out the stories that actually deserve attention.

I personally like this idea and it would really be helpful in engaging Workshop members.

I think maybe mods should choose the fic by random selection. Just number them and get a random number than that could be it. Of course once that one is done than you exclude it for the next week.

I'd love such an idea for three reasons.

1. It might get people to read my stuff *runs*
2. It'll give me an idea of what to read and look out for, etc.
3. I enjoy a good sense of community, and this would bring just that into light.

I really like this idea. It sounds like a lot of fun. The only aspect of it I would change is to make it bi-weekly instead of monthly. I think monthly would just be too long, and with a bi-weekly schedule twice as many fics would get into the spotlight.

That could work...

Every 2 weeks does sound better than every month.

This sounds like a great idea.

Personally I think that monthly would be better than bi-weekly, as spotlighting fics isn't the sole purpose. It's also important to have plenty of time to read and discuss the fic, especially if there are many slow readers out there. Plus, it would give the author more time to release new chapters while his/her fic is in the spotlight and maintain interest.

Also, since Legacy, Gama, and Drakon were knighted became mods, that's a fair amount of the Workshop's really popular stuff right there. So choosing a mod's fic and choosing just popular fics are more or less the same issue (there are exceptions of course).

My two cents. Sounds awesome, I'd definitely participate.

I like this but I do agree that the fics chosen shouldn't be that popular and that it would be a great way to spotlight lesser known but still good fics.

I think the mods should probably pick it but maybe users could PM them, suggesting certain fics? It would mean the users had some say and it would do a good job of removing favouritism as there are less people to be swayed.

EDIT: I think we should try it at bi-weekly and if it turns out there isn't enough time to properly discuss the fics, it could be extended to monthly.
