I'll update the OP a little later, but I wanted to make this thread so people can discuss stuff. Very Exciting :)

From the POGO website: Trainers, It’s Time to Conduct Important Pokémon Research! - Pokémon GO

Trainers,

A series of mysterious happenings is occurring all over the world, and Professor Willow is seeking Trainers to help him find out if this is connected to the Mythical Pokémon Mew. These research tasks will become available to Trainers around the world later this week!

There are two different types of research you can contribute to: Field Research and Special Research. Gather Field Research tasks by spinning nearby PokéStops, which will give you objectives that include discovering and catching certain Pokémon or engaging with battles, among other things. Special Research may be requested by Professor Willow himself, and will take you on a journey to make important discoveries!

Both types of research offer great rewards, including a variety of useful items and even encounters with certain Pokémon! You can complete as many research tasks as you want every day, leading to a full day of adventures. These tasks also have different levels of difficulty, so the more challenging a research task is, the greater the reward waiting for you.

You can earn one Stamp per day by completing at least one Field Research task, and when you obtain seven stamps, you can achieve a Research Breakthrough to receive even greater rewards! You may even have an encounter with a Legendary Pokémon!

Research tasks will provide interesting challenges that will help you get better at discovering, battling, and catching Pokémon! We're excited to see your contributions to the exciting field of Pokémon research, and we can’t wait to hear about the adventures you have along the way! Let’s get moving!

Is there some time-limit on achieving all of the stamps? I mean do you have to earn the number of stamps of a particular mission within a time frame?

Anyway, it seems it would offer a nice way to get a legendary, even for little me who has never done a legendary raid.

Sounds MMO which imo is awesome. Should be fun or frustrating depending on the quests.

From what I understand, you just get a daily stamp when you complete the first Field Research of the day. This just shows that you've done the daily minimum needed, regardless of which Field Research you used to get it. So the time frame is 24 hours, and you just need one of any. And when you get 7 days in a row, you get the Breakthrough which has better rewards, in a similar fashion to your seventh daily PokeStop spin/catch.

Now this sounds like a much better way to handle Legendary Pokemon. I understand why they want Legendary Pokemon for Raid Battles, but it does really make it more of a challenge for people to get them. Unless you're able to get to a Gym during the relatively short time limit and a good number of people, there's no way you can get a Legendary Pokemon. This makes it easier so if you're able to go through the usual motions to get the stamps, you can get a Legendary Pokemon. Maybe if it turns out to be successful, they can maybe include a time period to get the Raid Battle exclusive Legendary Pokemon.

Sounds interesting, but I have to find a way to empty my bag. It's such a waste to throw out the items (I really really hope we can sell them for coins or stardusts), and if you have a full bag, the Pokestop won't count as being spun.
