We all know that almost every anime has them. What are your opinions on them? Are they funny, are they a waste of time, are they good ideas? Leave your thoughts.

As you may already know, Kiratwig, I don't really mind filler episodes every now and then. They sometimes add a little humor in shows that lack it every now and then. If it's like Naruto though, where they had 100 fillers in a row, I can't stand that.

The alternatives to filler episodes are
a) Not adapting a manga series until it's concluded.
b) Stopping the anime once you catch up to the manga (and maybe make another season adapting later chapters at some pont in the future)
c) Ignoring the manga once you reach a decent jump-off point, and make up your own plot from there on.
d) Extending every scene by a ridiculous amount so you don't cover more than 1 chapter per episode.

Take your pick.

It depends on the series. If the fillers are good, I don't care. If they don't match up to the non-filler, we have a problem. Especially in the case of Naruto's infamous 85 episodes of filler (though Shippuden's filler arc was better than all the original series filler. Shame they picked option d.)

As far as "should" is concerned, the unfortunate fact is that it's a necessity for long-running shows. There's no way around it - manga chapters are shorter than anime episodes.

In my opinion, the show would be boring without a bit of fillers here and there. But not like Naruto's though.

If the fillers are well thought out, provide some character development, or are just plain humorous, I don't mind. If every filler in a Naruto caliber stretch of fillers were like this, I would be able to put of with that. (unfortunately, they aren't all like this)

I know of no other anime, so this is going to be about pokemon. I will agree that fillers are needed to buffer the space between critical events, like gym battles and contests. Too many fillers, if they all follow "help COTD with POTD and TR tries to capture it, they save it, everyone is happy", then we will get bored of that. DP has been helpful in that sometimes the pokemon do crazy things, or we have a little story arc to fill the gap. Fillers can be entertaining if done correctly.

Fillers are fine as long as it doesn't turn into a sitcom plot. I watch anime to be entertained; and sometimes a filler can be more entertaining than a cannon episode!

Filler can be a great break from a regular storyline, as long as it is just as entertaining (or in some cases, MORE entertaining) than the regular episodes.

Yeah, they can be entertaining. It's always best to give filler arcs a fair try. I like how it provides more material to watch, really. What I've seen in more than one place is people despising filler just because it's filler. As in "Oh, this anime's going to start a filler arc? Well, then I refuse to watch it until they return to the manga storylines!" Oh, silly anime fans.

I enjoy fillers as long as they do not take up like five story arcs.

In some cases, fillers are great. Take "Tanks for the Memories!", a Pokemon filler, for example. I enjoyed that filler, it was pretty funny and kind of interesting to watch. Especially with Satoshi in that maid outfit. Kukuku. .

But this one filler from Pokemon "Hypno's Naptime" with Hophophop town was just plain stupid.

In conclusion, interesting fillers are okay, and possibly even great! Other fillers. . Well, they're not great at all.

Either you get fillers or you get nothing, but the fillers in Bleach are no bad...

Well, I don't refuse to watch fillers, and I can understand how some people might in a certain un-named, but clearly referenced series.

In theory, a filler has potential to be good. Bleach's have been pretty okay of what I have seen, but it has it's problems. It can divert itself from the comics and potentially cause plot holes, or it can sit around and do nothing significant or development to the characters.

That said, fillers are really important to have in long running series, the Anime just catches up to comics, generally they are 2 issues per episode (unless they are painfully stretched out) and that doesn't count holidays. I think fillers are good to have, and sometimes slow down the action in a needed way. Plus, they are always better than Re-cap clip-show episodes :p

Depends. I really hate fillers most of the time because they usually feel very different from the main series which I find annoying. Especially when they have an entire mini-series worth of filler before getting back to the main storyline.

Sometimes filler can be ok, usually when it's a comedy or a series where they already take liberties with the characters all the time.
