Filler plagues the anime. We all know this. However filler is necessary to develop characters, but it doesn't always. So let's talk about filler's legitimacy and solutions to this problem.

My solution is for Ash to appear in only a fraction of the episodes and for him to have seven to twenty-one rivals each episode a rival will catch a new Pokemon, get a badge, meet another rival(leading to their own alliances, mentoring and rivalries) or develop their characters. Thus every episode is important and non wall-banging.

Will this work? Do you have a better Idea? Are you cool with filler?
LET'S GO!
IT'S THINKING TIME!!

You are talking about filler episodes, right? Not just scenes to fill up times in an episode? Anyway, to answer the question of being fine with filler, that depends on the filler episode. Just because it's filler doesn't mean I think it "plagues" the anime. Doesn't mean I think every non-filler episode is decent either.

Make filler episode worth watching and not just scream, "We only made this to stall for time."

And you don't need filler episodes to develop characters. Non-filler episodes can do all of that. Although with 600+ episiodes, that'd be really difficult.

Well, to answer your question, yeah I am cool with fillers. In fact most of my favourite episodes are condisidered filler (though the Pokemon fandom does have a decidedly odd way of defining filler).

It all depends what you want from the anime I guess, some people want tension and drama, or interesting character development. Personally I just want entertainment, and good fillers often provide it in spades.

That's not an appropriate response, Alphaplare. Other people can have opinions too...but really, try to answer the topic seriously.

Too many "non-fillers" would give the series a really rushed feeling, in my opinion. I really don't mind the occasional "fluff" episode where there's just a buncha chaos and non-eventful randomness (BW20 is a good example).

I have to agree with this, Kanto to me didn't feel rushed and it had a nice quick pace, If Best Wishes turn out this way i think it would be for the better.

As long as the filler isn't as bad as Johto's fillers were, I don't mind filler. I never want to sit through a saga where there is more filler eps than important eps in Pokemon again.

As for me, it really depends on what kind of filler an episode is. If it mainly developes the characters (ie The Ghost of Maiden's Peak) I am fine with it. However, I have a lot of problems with poorly written episodes that do nothing for the anime but kill time.

As far as I'm concerned. I could care less about fillers.

But, some of my favorites are fillers believe it or not. They work for giving Pokemon some fun battles and introducing new Pokemon as stuff. Remember this show has to last a certain amount of years.

Plus it's for advertisement anyway.

There's nothing wrong with filler episodes, that's just some negative stigma they've gotten. It's a negative sterotype they haven't been able to shake to make people automatically assume that all filler episodes are "bad". As long as the episodes are entertaining to me, they're fine.

i like Filler but somebody should put less in Jonto and put
.A Old Friend
.Training

Fillers have become like a witch hunt here. Anything you don't like gets ignored. BW blurred the line of what a filler is, so I don't think it matters anymore. If you don't want to watch the episodes, then don't. That is what the purpose of the label "filler" is, isn't it? So you know which episodes to skip since they don't matter. The problem with that is that it can be argued that NONE of it matters. Just watch what you want to watch.

Personally, I don't think fillers are a problem that need to be fixed. I've really enjoyed some of the fillers over the years, and I think that they can bring some of the best comedic moments that the series has ever shown. Often, they can be rather hit and miss, but the ones that do hit make the ones that miss tolerable in my opinion.

So, I don't have a solution.

That's my opinion as well. Sometimes it just doesn't work, but when it does, it's often some of the most memorable episodes.

I agree with this as well. For me I find the episodes I'll most likely re-watch in the future are the fillers...

I'm generally okay with fillers because having breaks in between the more serious episodes helps relieve the tension.

What I dislike is when an episode has a generic, boring storyline. This means the episode consists of Ash and company meeting a damsel in distress (whether it be a human or a Pokémon) with Team Rocket usually causing the trouble. It just so happens that most episodes with this kind of plot tend to be filler. I can find episodes like these bearable, however, if the writers utilize the group's Pokémon well because it at least grants them some screen time (an example of this would be BW008).

The solution? Don't let the filler episodes be repetitive and uncreative. Even the damsel in distress episodes can be done well if the writing is appealing enough and the CotD/PotD is interesting (an example of this would be BW033).

I'm with the guys above; the series pretty much fixed most of what was wrong with their fillers back in the Johto days. A filler from the Johto saga feels very different from a filler in the AG or DP series, in my opinion. And I speculate that's because the writers have learned how to make their fillers more substantial. Despite DP's length, it never really bothered me, whereas Johto was what caused me to flounce on the whole series initially.

I think BW's pace is completely different... it seems almost inconsistent at times, but I'm really not liking many BW episodes regardless of whether or not they're filler. Er... point is, there's no solution needed. Writers know how to write decent filler now.
