This game's release is going to be completely dwarfed by the release of Final Fantasy III, so I thought it deserved its own thread. This new Game Boy Advanced game is a remake of Final Fantasy V, first released in the US on the slowdown-ridden Playstation as part of Final Fantasy Anthology. The remake boasts a brand new translation, four new job classes (Prophet, Cannoner, Gladiator and Necromancer), improved graphics, and a new bestiary.

I remember playing this game on the Playstation and hating all the annoying load times, so it'll be great to play this game without all that slowdown. I also remember this being the hardest Final Fantasy ever...before this game, I never used spells like Haste or Protect because I was able to just power through all my battles, but that really isn't an option in this game. While the storyline wasn't that remarkable to me, it's still a fun game that deserves a play-through even with the more tantalizing FFIII around the corner.

Due to my goal of not playing any two consecutive FF games in order, I'm either going to have to beat IV faster then XII, or wait and play some other version in between. Either way, I'm still excited about this one.

Thinking about getting it. I loved FFI and II: Dawn of Souls, and I'm asking for FFIII for Christmas, so I'd be a bit incomplete without this one (and FFIV for GBA.)

Also, it'll be nice to have some RPGs to keep me occupied till Diamond and Pearl come out.

This is my second time playing this game, and so far it's proving to be more entertaining than my first playthrough. Maybe those load times really did affect my enjoyment the first time through.

Right now, Bartz is a Warrior, Leena's a White Mage, Galuf's a Monk, and Faris is a Black Mage.

I hated V. The only reason I kept playing as long as I did was because I liked Legend of the Crystals and knew that that annoying spore Mid was going to die shortly after the game ended.

FF V is my favorite game of the serie. Well, 6 beats 5 storywise, but the job system in this one is just plain awesome. And it marks the origin of Gilgamesh, the coolest bad guy in a FF game ever.

I had forgotten about Gilgamesh before I picked up the game...then, as I started playing it and the memories started flooding back, I remembered about the awesomeness that is Gilgamesh.

IIRC, Gilgamesh is a boss that can be fought in the GBA version of FF I.

Why did you hate V so much, Blackjack? Also, why'd you like that mediocre (at best) OVA?

I didn't like any of the characters except for Faris, I thought the gameplay was bad, and the plot was really boring.

At least in Legend of the Crystals, I was entertained.

I agree that Faris is probably the best character, but the others aren't bad, either. I like that Bartz isn't overly emo, and I think Galuf is like the only elderly character in a Final Fantasy game who can be molded into someone who's actually useful in battle.

To me, the Final Fantasy game with the least amount of likable characters was VII.

I thought the gameplay was bad,

The gameplay is probably V's greatest strength. The amount of customization you can do with the job system really helps ensure that you don't play the game the same way twice. Other than the job system, everything else is standard FF fare.

and the plot was really boring.

While the plot in V isn't the greatest, we've certainly seen worse from Square. From what I remember of V's plot, they don't try to force a contrived romance down our throats, so I appreciated that about the game.

At least in Legend of the Crystals, I was entertained.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Personally, I saw "Legend of the Crystals" as the start of the whole "why can't anyone make a good Final Fantasy anime?" line of questioning.

FFVII is one of the most overrated games ever.

It's still a good game, don't get me wrong...but there are about five other Final Fantasy games I'd rank as being better.

I was being sarcastic, the amount of whoring FFVII gets by fans, AND Square-Enix is rediculous.

I want a IX movie, damnit!

We're getting a remake of VI. Like IV and V, it's coming out for the Advance.

But I'd like a movie based on what the characters did during the missing year. Why did Strago join the Fanatics? How did Owzer hear about Relm? What caused Locke to go looking for Phoenix after all this time? How did Edgar become Gerad?

Well, I know about the GBA remake, but I was hoping more for something more like the FFIII remake we're getting next month. Can you imagine FFVI with that graphic style?

(Also, does anyone else think it's weird that Square is waiting until NOW to release these ports? I'm wondering what took Square so damn long...)

I wouldn't really want an FFVI movie because it would have the same problems the FFVII movie had; they would only really have time to focus on two or three characters, disabling the other characters from having anything more than a cameo appearance.

They could do it in short story format, with a bit about each of them. Sans Celes--we know what she was doing. And they could probably skip Umaro and Gogo too since you don't get them until the World of Ruin.

Maybe they had to adapt it to work with two buttons rather than four. But hey, if they can do it for that, they can probably do it for Mario RPG, which I'm also hoping for.

I'm surprised they're even bothering to release V and VI so late in the system's life. I mean, can you think of any other major releases for the GBA between now and FFVI?

I'd also expect a GBA remake of Chrono Trigger before Mario RPG, to be honest.
