What pokemon do i want to have in my party for the first few gyms?

I have a charmander at level 8 at the moment.

Only game i ever played and beat was pokemon blue and my charsard was like level 87 when i beat the elite 4 i want to have good strong party and i dont want to have one pokemon way above the rest.

This is my first time ever playing fire red and i was just wanting some help on what pokemon to get for the first couple for gyms

Well, as Brock is a pain for fire types unless it has Metal Claw, you probably want a Mankey with a fighting move or Butterfree with Confusion.

ok, but the thing is do i want to keep the same pokemon for misty and surge or what? sorry im kinda new at this lol

No prob.

Have you seen Bulbapedia? If not, here's the type chart, which will help. Also, every gym leader has a page with various info, as does each pokemon and type.

If you have seen the pedia, forget all that. As you can catch a Pikachu in the Viridian Forest, that's always a good idea. Charmander obviously will be in trouble, especially against that killer Starmie. Actually, I seriously recommend fighting every trainer you can before fighting Misty. She's one of the toughest gym leaders in the game.

Surge isn't as big a problem. You can get Diglett and Dugtrio prior to entering his gym. Since electric attacks do zip, take advantage of that.

Just don't use water or flying in that gym and for the love of Arceus DO NOT use Gyrados.

Oh, by the way, BUY that Magikarp in the Pokecenter before Mt. Moon. Get it up to lvl 20 and you have a very strong pokemon for the early game.

hmm well if i were to go with a butterfree do i train it from a caterpie and use the trainers in the forest to help me get him up?

Trainer's will only get you so far. You will have a lot of battling with wild pokemon.

My advice, just level up Charmander till it learns metal claw. You should level it anyways.

alrighty
ok, so im fighting the trainers in the forest atm and when i defeat one of their pokemon it dosent ask if i want tot switch to another isnt it supposed to?

1. Don't double post. Edit your previous post with your question.
2. Go to options. Turn Battle Shift on.

Get a Gastly as fast as you can, then you can p'wn Giovanni whit it.
Al his pokemon can just use Normal, Fight, Ground and Poison damaging moves.
Gastly family are immune to ground, fight and normal moves. And have double resistance to poison, so.....own'd.

Well, he could go that route, but I was able to beat Giovanni in this game with Charizard's flamethrower, regardless of immunities (after all, Charizard is also part flying). So, he really doesn't NEED a Gastly liner.

A fighting-type like Mankey is what you should catch. I once killed Onix in one hit with a low kick from Mankey.

No, but still owns.....

I would Catch an abra
Its not easy, just throw pokeball and hope to get lucky

Train it with a tm (secret move..i think it is called) or just put it out in Battle, then switch to main Pokemon to train it

Once Abra learns confusion training will be a breeze
