In case you didn't know, fixing your Gold or Silver version which no longer saves is rather easy to do by simply replacing the watch battery inside. I've done this myself and it works just fine. However, I'm concerned of it at some point dieing again. Does anyone know if by removing the battery that it will at all interfere with the saved game? Because if it doesn't all I'd have to do is take the battery out over long periods of time of not playing it.

Any help is appreciated, thanks. :)

It will kill your save unless you do it REAL FAST or hook up the game to another power source then switch (which is tricky.

EDIT: If you have stadium 2, you can back up your pokemon.

Also, dont ever remove the battery unless you need to.

You could try wireing up another battery to the game if you change it to save data. But that is risky. Just dump your pokemon to stadium 2.

Well, my save file was already toast, so I just recently bought a battery and used an internet guide to change it, and it works like new! If you're looking to preserve your old file, though, I can't help.

The best way to preserve your save data against battery failure is to buy something that'll allow you to backup a *.sav file of your game, so you can replace the battery with a new one and then restore the save data back to the cartridge. It's not quite as easy to accomplish for GB/GBC as it is for GBA, however it's still possible.

If your computer has a parallel port (or you're willing to use up an expansion slot with a parallel port card), then you can buy a Transferer II which will backup the save data to your computer and allow you to transfer it back after you've replaced the battery.

If you don't care about having the file backed up on your PC, or don't have a parallel port, you can pickup a "Game Boy Mega Memory Card" off eBay or someplace like that. It's shaped like an old-style Gameshark, but all it does is backup the save data of an inserted cartridge to its own internal storage and allows you to restore it later on.

Yeah, i am thinking about getting one. As battires dont last forever. Though, you can also use Staduim 2 or Japanese Stadium GS for backing up your pokemon.

But not your trainer ID, progress, items, etc. You wouldn't actually be able to use most of the backed up Pokemon until you'd gotten certain Gym badges again, since they'd techically be another trainers Pokemon from then on.

Yes, if you take out the battery, your saved game will be lost as well. (Unless of course, as the others have said, you transfer your Pokemon to Pokemon Stadium 2.)

Unfortunately my Silver died and I lost my whole game. :/
But I eventually did replace my battery and now it's good as new.
