Forms depending on factors outside the game (Vivillon and the like)

In XY, we were introduced to the massive number of Vivillon forms, which made the trade thread flood with requests for each and every wing pattern. Due to the wing patterns differing based on where the player lived in real life, this caused a frustration when it became difficult to get certain wing patterns from certain regions where Pokemon was relatively unpopular compared to other countries. They probably intended to show how pokemon of the same species could have different looks based on where they live, which is a pretty cool evolution theory reference. That, and GF wanting players all over the world to interact. Still, the whole trading aspect was an inconvenience, and unless there were direct modifications done to the hardware itself, getting a rare Vivillon form was difficult on one's own.

Would you like to see forms depending on factors outside the game again?

By the way, location isn't the only outside factor. While relatively easy to control, Seasons based on the real date, and Night/Day influence based on the real time are also extra-game factors. We've got Deerling/Sawsbuck forms and evolutions based on Night/Day.

Despite my enjoying the Vivillon forms, I was kinda irked when I had to trade around the world for different ones, and I couldn't breed the parent Vivillon for more of that same form. Maybe not do that again, but I'm definitely interested in more Pokemon like Sawsbuck, whose form changes and appearances are more based on time & date rather than geographical location. Speaking of Sawsbuck they need to introduce methods to obtain the other forms within games beyond Gen V.
I remember before OR/AS came out, there being a fake leak about a Contest Forme Vivillon. It was so pretty ;_;

A Pokemon whose appearence was dependent upon the time of day would be interesting. It could have a day and a night form, a bit like Cherrim & Shaymin. But more drastic - its appearance and type could change. In the day it could be a Fire type, but at night it could be Fairy or Dark.

I didn't like how Vivillion forms are exclusive to where you live. I hope that kind of thing doesn't happen again. I be interested in other ways that pokemon can change forms.

You could get different coloured Pokemon in Pokemon Stadium, depending on how you named the ones you uploaded from the Gameboy cartridge, that sort of thing would be fun

Vivillion's formes is something I imagine that Game Freak might drop in part, given their track record and knowing how frustrating it was. They might go back to one or two formes. On the other hand, they might look into ways to streamline it, such passing it over through breeding. The child Scatterbug could inherit the wing design from the mother. Or who knows, maybe GF won't do a thing about them and keep them as-is. Though I do imagine that the Pokeball wing design will be dropped.

I would. I wouldn't mind if we had a Pokemon where specific formes of it appeared depending on the time of the day. As for something like Vivillon... I'd rather they don't introduce another. Collecting all is painful, especially if you don't want outside devices involved or prefer to get everything on your own. x_x

Now I want to see that Contest Forme Vivillon...

Also I like that idea about the Pokemon's typing being changed, that sounds good!

I doubt any of Vivillon's formes will be dropped tbh. It's more likely they'll be streamlined or do nothing at all.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Pokemon with separate day/night forms. However, it doesn't change form depending on time of day, it's fixed to whatever form it appeared as (comparable to East/West Shellos and Red/Blue Basculin).

I was gonna suggest a werewolf Pokemon would be perfect until I read that last stipulation of yours. Oh well, a werewolf-style Pokemon would still be pretty cool. I've had them on my mind recently because of MTG Shadows Over Innistrad. Now that's a property that makes good use of a day/night concept!

I really enjoyed the Vivillon Patterns and collecting them all. It was a challenge, but I personally found it more rewarding to snatch a rare pattern off GTS or get one off WT~

I would love to see more different forms based on outside game factors whether it be seasons, day and night, real world location, etc.

I remembered it incorrectly, it was called the Aurora Pattern Vivillon.

I actually really, really liked that fake ;_;
Oh wow. It's too bad that's a fake; it looks amazing.

Although I liked the idea of the Vivillon patterns, collecting them was a bit tricky. I'd like GF to maybe refine the idea--give us a chance to maybe breed for certain patterns--before doing it again. Because I'm the type of person who wants to complete the collection then maybe help somebody else do the same. (Yeah, I'd breed the rare ones them either WT them or pop them on GTS for a steal. I'm crazy like that.)

I do think that the Vivillon patterns should have been breedable. That seems like a reasonable compromise.

But honestly, I have been somewhat irked by how they have handled form mechanics across generations. Shellos and Deerling are what come to mind, specifically. Instead of retaining the east/west location-based mechanic for Shellos, they simply turned them into version-exclusives which is boooooooooooooring. Especially in Hoenn of all places. You can't tell me that there's not enough water on both sides every side in order to facilitate the mechanic. And for Deerling, you just flat-out cannot get the Summer, Autumn, and Winter forms in Gen VI (which is painful for me, because I prefer all of those to the Spring form...). I find this one in particular to be inexcusable, since Kalos had very blatantly seasonal-themed locations, and ORAS had not only the Weather Institute which could have had some device that simulates a seasonal condition, kind of like using the meteorites to cycle through Deoxys's Formes. Or I don't know, they could have had seasonal-themed Mirage Spots. Something, at least. I understand why they couldn't include seasons as a whole but come on, don't just cut the forms out completely.

I don't mind having forms based on this kind of stuff, but I wish they would be consistent about them.

I love pokemon having alternate forms. It makes pokemon feel more unique and special. That's the main reason shiny pokemon are so cool to me. I also prefer forms that you can't change between. Say there's a pokemon that has different leaf/petal colors based on the season. If I prefer the fall version of the pokemon I would hate for it to suddenly turn into the winter version over the next season.

However, alternate forms shouldn't be too difficult to obtain if someone wants to catch them all. I mean really, we have a pokemon who has tons of alternate looks because of its spots (Spinda). You can't tell me I shouldn't be able to easily get all the forms of Vivillon without specialized trading.

I can kindof see why they make it difficult, though. The different forms promote global trading and people connecting in such a friendly manner, and that's always been a core concept for this series. Plus it was a pretty interesting way for them to be distributed, by real world region than an in-game one. I can see them doing that again, as they also did in the OR/AS demo with the Mega stone that was available.

I suppose I sit on the fence on it - I enjoy seeing the weird and wonderful methods of distribution and evolution that GF come up with, but I also get irked when it means I end up missing out on a form I really like. :LOL:

You know, in hindsight these seem like such obvious ideas? I'm...actually a little surprised that one of these didn't happen.
