The estranged son of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church said his father is "on the edge of death."

Fred Phelps Sr. became famous for organizing picket lines of brightly-colored signs carrying hateful messages against tolerance during the funerals of military personnel and famous figures. His actions led to at least two federal and several state laws restricting protests during military funerals.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Nathan Phelps, who has been estranged from his father for 30 years, said the senior Phelps was dying in hospice care in Topeka, Kan., and that he had been excommunicated from his own church in August of 2013.

"I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made," Nathan Phelps wrote.

"I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many," he continued. "I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes."

A spokesman for the Westboro Baptist Church said Sunday that the elder Phelps, 84, was being cared for in a facility in Shawnee County, Kan. Spokesman Steve Drain declined to identify the facility or to characterize Phelps' condition.

"I can tell you that Fred Phelps is having some health problems," Drain said. "He's an old man, and old people get health problems."

Don't really have anything witty to say, except there will only be one chance to picket this man's funeral, it better be epic.

Unsurprising given how ancient he is. Can't say I'll be sad to see him go - though picketing his funeral would be a bit too much staring into the abyss for my tastes.

People who would protest his funeral are no better than he.

I think the best middle finger we can give to Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church would be to just ignore his death and ignore the church as a whole (why haven't people done that already? Oh wait, clickbait).

I am interested in knowing why he was excommunicated though.

And hypocritical. We in the LGBT community often criticize the WBC protests at funerals for not respecting the passing of a loved one. It would be the height of hypocrisy to then do the same at Fred Phelps' funeral. No matter my feelings for this man and the harm he has caused to countless people, he is still a human being and I for one will not stoop so low as to celebrate anyone's death.

And that would be called "missing the point".

According to the Huffington Post, it was for "advocating a kinder approach between church members". Also according to the HP, he just recently passed.

Don't even bother with planning to picket the funeral; there won't really be one as the church believes that a having a funeral is akin to worshiping the dead. I hate to say this, as it is completely disgusting to even speak aloud but I truly hope that the man was alone when he passed. If there is any justice in this messed-up world of ours, his room was devoid of any human beings while he drew his final gasps. But in any case, let him pass into obscurity.

Well, he doesn't sound like the nicest person, and his actions were repulsive. However, I don't think you should picket anyones funeral.

And now with him gone, this "church" can sink into the dust where it belongs.

And now, he will finally know if God truly hated cigarettes so much.

Right. It may seem like "karma", but in reality, he's dead and would never know that it was done. In reality, he'd probably think it was funny if he could know, because he was just that screwed up. The only thing that could ever be accomplished by picketing his funeral would be the people doing so having sunk down to his level.

But people are always obsessed with childish revenge, instead of doing the right thing.

RIP Fred Phelps. I'll never forget all you've done for the gay rights movement by making anyone who opposes it look ridiculous! Thanks for everything! (I HONESTLY have to wonder sometimes if this was his intent. He had to have known he was ridiculing homophobia)
