Let's face it, I'm okay at computer art *plug for my art thread*, but I just can't do much with MSPaint. What is a good, free, art program for Windows XP?

Gimp is okay, I guess. It's a little difficult to adjust to but it has layers, anti-alias tools and filters. It's basically a free, scaled down Photoshop
If you have good internet connections, the ShiPainter oekaki right at Bulbagarden's oekaki is good for drawing, if you've got a good, steady hand or a tablet. You can also create graphics with ShiPainter like banners 'n stuff but you have to screenprint to "save" and you cant resume your work unless you upload it with the animation option on

GIMP apparently can do almost anything Photoshop...I think it was 6...can do, and can do some things 6 can't (because of its scripting extensions). CS, though, is just fancy. Not that I have much experience with GIMP--I just know the basics.

The reason why most people don't use it is because it has a rather different interface than Photoshop's, which is what most people are used to. This results in flame wars on Slashdot whenever either are mentioned. As usual.

Gimp is heeaaavy, though. xD
I like to draw on oekaki! But you'll be useless at that if you're bad at MS Paint. ^^; Unless you go to one with Shi Painter and learn to use that...

Photoshop Elements is alot cheaper than Photoshop, totally lacks advanced features and it's not free (it cost 100 dollars).

Most fan artists use Paint Shop Pro because it's easier to use than Photoshop, but it's still not free... (it cost 70-100 dollars).

Paint.net is like sojmewhat easy, but it still missing features, but certainly more powerful than MS Paint.

Paint.Net is free too btw, but if anything I still prefer Photoshop.
Paint.Net has some photoshop-esque features and gets certain tasks done,
but since I already have a Photoshop 7.0, I'd rather stick with that.
Though if you are looking for something better than paint and something cost
efficeint (in this case free) then Paint.Net is also a good editor program.

Though I've heard some people say that Gimp is one of the best you can have
aside from shelling out hundreds on a Photoshop program. Only thing is I haven't
given it a try so I'm not sure what to say.

Hmm......

I should probably check out that program, since I go to an art college. XD

I would like to testify that GIMP pwns. I use GIMP for all my picture editing, graphic making, and .gif animating needs.

Wow!

That sounds awesome, Pie! ^^

And it definitely sounds like GIMP's a lot easier to use than Photoshop (and I've already had the first 3 days of my Photoshop class, yet I still don't know how to do much with that program).

Photoshop isn't supposed to be free.

Yeah, GIMP is pretty sweet.

It can take a lot of practice to do some of the more fancy GIMP things, too - but overall, it's such a great program.

I'll be glad to help people out if they need it, by the way.
