I said I'd make this, and here it is. I'm going to put every question I can think of in this post, if you have any more...feel free to ask. I'm taking part of this from the Free Comic Book Day website.

1. What is Free Comic Book Day?

As the name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world are giving away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores.

2. When is Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day will take place on May 6, 2006 .

3. Are they really free?

Absolutely. Although, in my experience, SOME comic book stores (the minority) may have weird policies including limiting the number you can take or requiring you to spend a certain amount of cash beforehand. But MOST allow you take however many you want (within reason, i.e. 5 of each book is REALLY overdoing it) without forcing you to buy anything.

4. Is every comic book store in the world doing this?

I don't know, but MOST do it. And this is "THE WORLD" not just the USA, and not just North America.

North America Participating Comic Shop Locator Specifically, that applies to the US and Canada.

Outside of the US or Canada Comic Shop Locator.

Using the links above, you should EASILY be able to find someplace near you (assuming there ARE shops near you, and depending upon your definition of the word "near").

5. Who's involved?

Overall participation from just about every major comic book publisher has been amazing, from the biggest publishers to independent publishers, fansites, news magazines, and more.

6. What's the big deal about comic books anyway?

Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers, and have survived: the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of television, the spread of color and sound motion pictures, the rise of videogames, and the Internet. That's worth celebrating in our book, and as this site continues to grow and evolve, you'll see even more information about this wonderful medium.

Had to throw that one in.

7. What comics are being given away?

Any other questions? And, oh...for all the manga fans out there, Tokyopop ALWAYS gives out a free manga which is usually a compilation book showcasing the manga they have.

According to the "Lying the Gutters" column over at Comic Book Resources.com, they're saying that NO London comic book stores are participating, but at least 68 OTHER UK comic stores ARE. Also, there's at least one Paris, one Athens, and one Hellas (where IS that, anyway?) store that are participating.

Not exactly BIG news, but it's worth noting. And, again, if you live within or outside of the US, I've put links for BOTH store locators, so you can find the nearest participating store. And, while you're there...why not pick up Civil War #1 (hitting stands thi Wednesday)? It's a nice place to jump-on if you're considering comics and the free stuff doesn't interest you.

So how'd it go?

My local shop was having a huge discount sale. I got three graphic novels for 15% off and 5 Pokemon TCG boosters for 10% off. And I picked up the X-Men/Runaways one-shot. Actually, I ended up with two of them after a bizzare fluke.

One I went to had half-off their back issues. I bought 26 comics (spent $15) and snagged about 10 of the free comics and a couple of small figurines. Got the free comics I was expecting to find and managed to fill in some key gaps in my Avengers collection.
