We need a thread, so I am making one. Pokemon toxic yaoi fans unite.
I am not very connected to the fandom at large, except some browsing of pixiv and anonymously lurking on ao3 from time to time, so I can't really give a good overview. Where I come from (mastodon) I am literally the only person posting Spinel content.

I can however sincerely reccomend chocokano's work, who apperared on the forum yesterday.
I can also tell you about the fic that resonated with me the most: Grounding Techniques by SageNebula. When I read it, I was experiencing the exact same things as Friede was in this fic- invasive neurological testing and gaslighting. It literally saved my sanity. Spinel and Friede in general are saving my life lol.
Take the warnings on the fic seriously before reading!

I will definitely post some FrieSpi fanart when I feel confident enough in it, so, beware!

I am not a writer, but I do have some loose headcanons about these two and I want to hear yours!
Friede is exactly the type of guy I would meet at local poly and bi meetups - ex-Academia/academia dropout, ADHD, nerdy, lives in a commune and has anarchist vibes. He even looks similar to some people I would see there lol.
Spinel is the epitome of an evil androgynous all around queer. Just pure perfection. Beauty incarnate.
I think the two should kiss!
Friede is the only person in the cast that Spinel actually views as an equal, as a threat. That is fascinating to him, and he does seem to be the obsessive type to me. I can't help but wonder, if during the timeskip, he was just keeping Friede captive all this time, because he wanted him for himself!

I think that there isn't a person on earth who could fix or redeem Spinel and I love him for that. I love the idea that they hate each other and really get on each others' nerves, but their mutual respect despite it draws them together (in a very toxic way, this relationship will never be healthy and that's awesome).

Something about that vibe really drew me to the ship, and I adore it -- their quipping at each other and actively trying to annoy the other (while thinking they're pretty) is so silly.

You're right though that I think Friede is the only person who has any shot at it, lol.

That is such a great take.
There really is something about this enmity between them that is compelling.

And yeah... Any ship with Spinel in it is by necessity a toxic one.
 
ooh, have you guys ever tried to brainstorm a -Shipping name for these two? sounds like a fun exercise :bulbaLol: you can use the neverending romance shipping list to check if the name is already in use (more or less, i don’t think most horizons ships are on there yet but i can’t imagine there would be overlap with throughthedoorshipping or pendantshipping etc lol)
