Ok, I don't know everything about every pokemon game like some. But I have my own thoughts to whats been added as the games advanced through the years and what could happen in future based on current stuff. I am going to need help fill in the blanks here, all comments and thoughts welcome. No comments that attack an idea, creative critisims please.

Gen I:

These were the first games. They introduced the idea that creatures existed all over the place and that they could battle with eachother and there were people that captured these creatures in pokeballs and battle with them, giving them the name Pokemon or "Pocket monsters" because a pokeball could catch a pokemon and it could shrink down and fit in your pocket.

When Yellow came, the anime was started and it let the players play out Ash life as he went through Kanto and challenged the Kanto E4 (but Ash in anime did not do some of the things you can do in game)

Yellow gave us the chance to see that a pokemon could be seen outside its pokeball and follow the player, in this case pikachu. This trend was here to stay, but it would not be until Gen IV when this was brought back and made better. You had to apply a few new strategies to beating Kanto gyms this time as apposed to Red, Green or Blue because in those games if you had squirtle or bulbasaur as a starter you could beat Brock easily, but with Pikachu, you need to catch and get a high enough level pokemon that knows a fighting move to beat Brock, like mankey or Nidorans double kick, but mankey is better.

Gen II:

I don't know too much about Gen II, but it did introduce new things:

Two regions in a game which as of yet has not been seen again. Think this has happened because Kanto and Johto are so far the only two regions we see that are beside eachother. Hoenn and Sinnoh are not and enither are Hoenn and Kanto and so on.

A whole heap of new pokemon came, pre evolutions (aka baby pokemon) appeared. Like Pichu, Magby, Elekid.

Color came and these games too advatage of the slightly faster Gameboy Color and color screen.

Breeding and Eggs were introduced - Dittos for breeding

Gaurenteed the chance to capture a Shiny pokemon - Red Garaydos

Shiny Pokemon could be bred easier if one pokemon you bred with was shiny or both were. This had a higher chance of the hatched pokemon being shiny. A trend that was dropped after Gen II

Berries were introduced

New types of pokeballs for catching certain types of pokemon easier came, like a heavy ball catching heavy pokemon easier like Snorlax and so on.

Crystal introduced the Battle tower.

Gen III:

Made for Gameboy Advance.

Contests appeared. This made pokemon moves have certain styles for certain contests like cool, tough, cute, smart and beauty.

More berries. All berries could be used for making pokeblocks to heighten a sheen of a pokemon for contests. Some berries were created just for this option.

New animations and artwork was updated, new sprites came.

New moves and TM/HMs appeared. New gameplay styles appeared such as being able to dive underwater

Weather effects came (or were they in gen II?) they allowed things to happen in battle. A pokemon was made to show how weather effects could do something, castform.

Double Battles appeared. Minum and Pluse were created to show off this. Both had an ability that raised the special attack of the of the other ally pokemon in battle if it has the same ability, and only these two have the same ability.

FR/LG introduced that two games could have similar timelines and that games were popular enough to redo. It also introduced vs seeker which was a good addition. These games also showed that a remake could add stuff not in the original games, but stay true to the original games they remade. More visual enhancements came.

Trading or connecting games without wires appeared with wireless adapters and the first glimpse of pokemon going wireless happened.

Emerald came and introduced the true "Swarming pokemon" which only surskit in RS did not really do. It introduced the first Battle Frontier, a place where you could battle in various places under different circumstances, not just like the previous battle towers.

Natures were introduced in Gen III as were differences with pokemon. Spindas spots show this. Natures made pokemon have varied stats depending on the species of pokemon and what nature it had, making battling more interesting.

I'll post more tomorrow

Gen II: Don't forget genders.
Gen III: This is where natures were introduced, not Gen II.

Weather effects were introduced in Gen II, but they weren't really expanded much upon until Gen III when Hail was added and they started to take place on their own on the map.

Gen II: Introduced Legendaries playing a part of the story, and there being a Legendary featured in every version. Introduced Happiness as a hidden stat based on Yellow's Pikachu.

Gen III: Introduced version Legendaries being the main focus of the story, introduced multiple event Legendaries. Introduced Formes. Introduced having two rivals - one the opposite gender and the unpicked character and one male, in each game.

They had swarming Pokémon back in Gen II as well. Six Pokémon would become more widely available during the random times (You needed to have the phone numbers of certain people in order to know when they were available).

Otherwise they were super rare (1%).

Gen II also had sales in the Department store, which was expanded upon in Gen III, but as far as I know, dropped in Gen IV.

I guess you could say Gen II was the first to introduce random events, and timed events.

Hmmmm, the more I think about it, the less suck Gen II really is.

Gen II introduced Steel and Dark types

Gen III introduced the concept of a "friendly" rival instead of douchebags. We were also given an actual League Champion, a seperate character from the rival, and one who interacted with us during the game leading up to E4.

One of my favorite things that Gen 2 introduced was the Pokegear. I thought the radio was awesome. This was dropped in Gen 3, but brought back with Gen 4. There were a few things that I liked from Gen 2 that were dropped in Gen 3 and brought back in Gen 4. That's why Gen 3 is my least favorite.

Gen II also introduced the following...

~ The ability to have Poke Balls made out of Apricorns, though why they dropped this idea in favor of just purchasing new Balls at the PokeMart is weird in my opinion. Progress in the Pokemon World, I guess.

~ Pokemon that run away even if you didn't encounter them in the Safari Zone (that gave me some trouble acquiring a Larvitar back then). It made Pokemon act more like real animals, but I'm happy they decided to drop this feature.

~ The very first Pokemon with multiple physical variations in the same species: Unown, which they improved on in Gen III with Spinda's nearly limitless spot patterns, and then in Gen IV with eastern and western versions of Shellos/Gastrodon.

~ The very first Pokemon that can make something else out of something you make it hold: Shuckle, with it's ability to create Berry Juice and Rare Candies.

~ The concept of giant Pokemon, which is also reflected in the anime and later games. This is most apparent in Sprout Tower's giant Bellsprout which also acts as the tower's support pillar.

~ Pokemon happiness. I'm annoyed at this concept, so I won't go any further on this...

There's so many other little things introduced in Gen II... but I've run out of ideas at the moment.

Here's to waiting for your return, Johto!

Gen III improved on the storyline differences between the two games with the inclusion of Teams Magma and Aqua; depending on the version, one team was evil and the other was good.

Wasn't that just a wooden pillar that was built to move around like a Bellsprout?

Unfortunately, as far as I know, this was dropped. Hopefully this will be changed for GSDS.

The Poketch is as much a Pokegear as the Pokenav is. Infact, Gen III may have been closer considering that trainer rematches were run by both the Pokegear and Pokenav, aswell as a full coloured map. Not to mention that the Pokenav eventually got a Match Call. Basically, Gen II introduced another trainer-essential item outside of the Pokedex. Just because the Poketch is a watch, does not mean it was closer to the Pokegear's function than the Pokenav was.

---

Gen III also had the ability to team up with other players, and for two unrelated playersto team up against you.

Gen 2 just expanded on happiness. It didn't introduce it however.

Pikachu in yellow you had to treat it kindly and over time it would get happy. You had to make it really happy so some trainer gave you a Bulbasaur in one point of the game. So Pikachu mood metre was in a sense very similar to GSC and later. When you first get it it hates you and over time it loved you.

So it was gen 1 who introduced happiness and gen 2 expanded it to every Pokemon and took it to the next level like evolutions and stuff.

Oh, yeah. I owned Yellow and forgot all about that...

Gen II also introduced animated sprites that would not appear again until Emerald and would stay thereafter.

Gen IV:

New game console once again, Ninendo DS. Graphical overhaul for the new system.

D/P Games:

Introduced competitave battling and IVs. Took Breeding to a better level.

Introduced touch screen and poffins and making them using the touch screen. Added poketch and using the touch screen to control it.

When touch screen and top screens, the display seemed less crowded as pokemon moves and information could be seen on bottom screen, while what your doing could be seen on top screen.

Introduced wifi trading. You no longer need to be in close proximity to trade pokemon making it easier to obtain pokemon and complete your national dex. You could also battle with people far away.

Introduced wifif battle tower where top players could go to challange the 100 rooms and if they beat a kot, could have their player and pokemon on the wifi battle room so people could challange it.

Introduced many new pokemon, including evolutions of previous gens pokemon.

Introduced Pal Park where, because the DS had a GBA slot, you could stick your GBA pokemon game in and move pokemon to your current game via migration. Also using this method caused certian pokemon to appear on certian routes depending on what pokemon game was inserted in GBA slot when you had D/P game running. Teddiusra if Emerald was inserted, Solrock if ruby was inserted and so on.

Pokeradar was included. You could have a chance of getting any shiny of wild pokemon, and find a few national dex pokemon this way. Great addition IMO.

Did Gen IV introduce a legendary with a gender that could be either male or female when you encountered them? (Heatran)

Removed a few HMs and added some. Removed Dive as it was not needed, added Rock Climb and Defog, but made Flash into a TM since there was only one real dark area that was needed in, the place below the cycle route where you find gibite in.

Introduced underground, a place where you could dig up items like stones, fossils etc...

Similar to headbutt trees, Honey trees were introduced so that you could catch rare pokemon like Munchlax or heracross. Not the best option in manys opinion.

Special/Physical moves got a slight change.

Geder differences appeared. Although slight, you could see differences if you noticed enough.

The first true 3D animations appeared. Pokemon following player came, but only in Amnity square.

Contests got an overhaul, not to everyones liking.

Was it this Gen that introduced that you only had to see every pokemon in the regional dex, to complete it? Great in my opinion as you could see all the regional dex pokemon in the game using various methods, catching, evolving pokemon or battling NPCs/Gyms etc...

Introduced the most legendaries out of any game.

Introduced berries that are held items to weaken a foes super effective move, based on the holders weakness if holding the right berry.

Introduced a rival that did not wanted to prove how good he was and stayed optimistic if he lost, not get frustrated and want to kick your ass bad if you beat him like Red.

Introduced new items and ball capsules (I seen no point for)

Platinum:

Introduced more 3D with Wifi Plaza

Introduced respawning legendaries - great if you accidently KO one and still want it.

Brought back the Battle Frontier again, but made it in such a way you had to understand about typeing and battling to ger through each area of battle zone.

rebattling Gym leaders was introduced again.

Even more use of 3D with distortion world, even if it was not over much.

Being able to catch a level 100 Magikarp. Whats up with that? Well, having a high enough level magikarp you could catch could get you a high enough level garaydos easily and just ev train it or give it vitimans without too much to get it to level 100.

Move tutors appeared again.

Introduced a few design changes to areas, like making Battle Island into a tropical island. Showed Stark mountain lava better.

VS recorder was added so that you could see your and other peoples battle videos. Helps with competitave battling IMO.

Nrew movesets for pokemon came. No longer was outrage restriced to a few pokemon, but now many. With a move tutor teaching magnet rise, more electric types could have the chance of evading super effective ground moves this way.

More coming, I am in class and can't finish this now.

D/P Games:

Introduced competitave battling and IVs. Took Breeding to a better level.
The current IV/EV system was introduced since Gen 3, actually. That is, the 0 to 31 IV for each Stat, and 510 distributable EVs per Pokémon.

And well... competitive battling has existed since Gen 1. If any, Gen 4 made it more widespread with the advent of Wi-Fi, but there's always been a competitive side to the game ever since its origins, and a dedicated community to define all the aspects of the metagame each given Generation.

G4 introduced the Brace items, making Competitive Battles within everyones grasp, not just the obsessed.
