Vincent Connare designed the ubiquitous, bubbly Comic Sans typeface, but he sympathizes with the world-wide movement to ban it.

Mr. Connare has looked on, alternately amused and mortified, as Comic Sans has spread from a software project at Microsoft Corp. 15 years ago to grade-school fliers and holiday newsletters, Disney ads and Beanie Baby tags, business emails, street signs, Bibles, porn sites, gravestones and hospital posters about bowel cancer.

The font, a casual script designed to look like comic-book lettering, is the bane of graphic designers, other aesthetes and Internet geeks. It is a punch line: "Comic Sans walks into a bar, bartender says, 'We don't serve your type.'" On social-messaging site Twitter, complaints about the font pop up every minute or two. An online comic strip shows a gang kicking and swearing at Mr. Connare.

The jolly typeface has spawned the Ban Comic Sans movement, nearly a decade old but stronger now than ever, thanks to the Web. The mission: "to eradicate this font" and the "evil of typographical ignorance."

People actually want to ban fonts? What's next?

Who'd want to use Comic Sans, anyway? It's tacky and horrible. =/

People who freak out about a perfectly readable font need to be sent into labor camps to be given something to do.

Um, banning fonts now? XD Why not be productive and solve a real problem, like poverty? XD

so with the state of the world these days, people actually waste time on banning a form of writing that most people don't even use.

Are these people sterile?

I love comic sans ;_;

Okay, we get it, its fucking overused. But holy shit people, have you seen some of the dumbass fonts they have on MS Word? At twelve point font some of them are so small and unreadable, and when they're enlarged, they're so ugly.

And what about MT Extra? Its random symbols for crying out loud. What? Want to talk in code? I'm pretty sure if soemthing is soooo important that it must be written in code, you would not use a font used on MS Word -_-

They are dumb

EDIT:

And really, how many people are going to write in greek (or is it latin) symbols. The ones commonly used in Math are in the math function on MS word anyway -_-

Attempting to ban something usually does nothing but further encourage its use. Case in point, this thread.

I take typography and apparently Comic Sans is a design no-no, professionally (because it lacks any real strength or balance), but honestly, if people are just using it for fun, or if it compliments the item it's on (like the Beanie Baby tags), I fail to see any problem.

Also, I think all caps comic sans looks good in comic books. And think it's hilarious the creator was inspired by Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns to create his font.

Buhwhahahahaha! >:D

I suppose after they ban the Comic Sans, a handwriting ban will be next.
Maybe I hang out in the wrong places, or don't pay attention to fonts, but, I hardly ever see Comic Sans used.

No it should'nt and at least it's a readable one. I just hope they won't ban it's use in graphics. But still I think banning it is stupid.

Well, if people are designing things, they should know what's good and what's not. If they don't, their loss, no point in banning it because it sucks for designs and people use it -_-

Windigs, yet another font that deserves to be banned more than Comic Sand

Can you believe there are three of these default fonts on MS Word 2007

Seriously, when is anyone really going to have a practicaly use for even one of these

I type all of my emails in Comic Sans, just to annoy my friends. :D It's generated a lot of hate. It's not my favorite font by a long shot, but I don't think it's a crime, either. It's well-suited to certain things, but clashes with others. Though I rather like it in comics. Seeing a classic comic without it would leave me feeling empty and sad.

As for dingbat fonts, they're there to spruce up a page without the use of images, or for inputting a symbol where the unicode equivalent isn't used (or maybe unavailable). Otherwise, just consider it "for fun"... nothing wrong with that! ;D Who hasn't typed random crap in dingbats and "translated" it by switching it to a normal font? It's kinda fun, in a sad way!

I think it's funny. I figure while banning is a bad idea, the movement to ban it is doing a lot of good because it encourages people to think about whether the font they're using is appropriate. 14 point purple comic sans legal letters are laughable.
