[Short story I did for English class and thought I'd share it with the Bulba community. I hope you like it.]
Furious Storm
The rain was coming down hard, the wind was whistling through the trees, the thunder was roaring, and the lightning flashed its blinding blue light. But tonight, this harsh rain was perfect for a Friday Night Scary Movie Event. Inside a certain house on a certain street were three teenagers, getting ready for a soon to be scary night.
Inside, the brunette girl with dark brown eyes was setting up the DVD player. She put the DVD in and plopped onto the far end of the couch with the remote in her hand.
“Hurry up!” she shouted behind her. “Or I’m going to start without you!”
A blonde boy came running into the room with a huge bowl of popcorn. “Sorry! I couldn’t find the butter.” He handed the popcorn to the girl who sat it on the coffee table in front of her.
“JESSE! GET YOUR BUTT IN HERE!” She screamed behind her and startled the blond boy who was getting ready to sit on the couch next to her.
“Geez, Kathy! Blow out my ear drums why don’t ya!” He came walking into the room, arms full of 20 oz. bottles of soda and cups.
“Hey, Alex, careful with that popcorn. This is my room after all.” She glared at the boy trying to catch popcorn in his mouth.
“Sowwy.” He swallowed the last of the popcorn in his mouth and Jesse put the sodas down on the table and plopped down on the couch next to Alex.
“Alright, let’s get started!” She held up the remote and pressed “play.”Jesse and Kathy snuggled up on, Alex who didn’t appreciate being the squeeze buddy.
Outside the thunderstorm fiercely roared. It was frighteningly dark. Why didn’t the trio notice this? It was only 5:00 PM. It shouldn’t be this dark at 5:00 PM in the middle of summer.
The trio continued to watch movies. Meanwhile the storm kept going and going until there was a tremendous crash was heard in the living room.
The trio jumped and shrieked, thinking it was part of the movie they were watching. The lights flickered and went dead. They looked around confused, still clinging to one another.
“What… was…that?” Kathy asked still in a daze. She got up slowly and headed for her door to see what was going on. The two brothers followed. Kathy looked back at Alex who had his hands under his chin as if he was praying and Jesse had a plastic bat. Kathy gave Jesse the look that said “What good is that going to do?!”
They crept down the hall to where the living room was located. They peeked through the door and stared at the bundles on the floor.
“What the hell! “Jesse blurted out.
“Trashcans?!” Kathy shouted over Jesse, dumbfounded. Why were there trashcans on the floor, let alone in the house? Was someone vandalizing the house? No, who would be out in this kind of storm? They could hear something in the distance. They looked out the window and for the first time they saw the storm. It was clear what that sound was.
“Is that a siren?” Alex looked at the others for confirmation.
“C’mon. Let’s go to the basement” Kathy grabbed the boys’ wrists and led them to her basement.
Like any basement, this basement was made of concrete. The basement was somewhat small so it only had one window. The window wasn’t too big or small, but a person could easily fit through it. The window was across from the stairs. Beside the window were bookshelves that had just a few items on them, mostly emergency kits. Next to the stairs was the furnace and next to that were the plumbing pipes.
“Hey… You think we should use those pipes to grab onto?” Jesse was scanning the pipes for defects.
“Hmmm… probably. But ya know, we are underground, so I doubt we would get sucked up.” Kathy was scanning the basement for stability.
Pottery, glass, and furniture were falling above them and the house began to shake.
“It is here already?!” Alex spun around and stared at Kathy then at the window.
“Quick! Get down in the corner!” Kathy pointed at the pipes.
They huddled together underneath the pipes.
“Shouldn’t we have brought the mini TV with us?” Alex was staring at the mini TV on the bookshelf that was across the room.
“No, it’s too late for updates now, it’s here!” Kathy was staring at the window, waiting for something to happen. The window started to shake. Kathy’s eyes grew larger as the shaking increased.
By this time the house was still shaking violently. The window shattered and Kathy squeezed her eyes shut in reflex. The suction from the tornado was dragging them towards the window.
They quickly grabbed onto the pipes, encircling their arms around them. The fierce wind came through the window with tree limbs and shrapnel. As wind came in, it took the basement contents when it exited.
“AAAAHHH!!!” The shrapnel was whipping everyone in the face causing injuries.
“Don’t worry guys! I have a solution to this!” Kathy shouted over the wind.
“Don’t be reckless!” Alex shouted.
“The last thing we want is to die!” Jesse joined in.
Kathy spotted an excellent piece of wood to her right that would be perfect to block the window. She positioned herself just right so she could jump for that wood and block the window safely. “1…2…3!” She leapt, grabbed the wood and jumped for the window. Perfect.
The window was now boarded up and the suction subsided and everyone let out a big sigh of relief. But there was a cracking sound. The wood couldn’t hold the mighty force of the tornado. It finally gave in.
The wood had snapped in two. The suction was just too much for such a thin piece of wood. Everything was in slow motion.
Jesse and Alex’s expression went from relief to horror. The flung theirs arms out trying to reach her, but it was no good. She was too far away. They screamed in horror, but Kathy’s screaming could be heard over theirs. She turned herself around trying to grip the window, but the broken glass prevented her from tightly gripping it. The boys screamed her name as she was taken away from them. She flew into the hell that was the tornado.
The tornado continued to roar for who knows how long. All they knew was that Kathy’s house no longer had an upstairs. At some point the stairs collapsed. The tornado disappeared, like Kathy did. The boys were quiet, not even crying. They just kept staring at that window. The same scene kept going through their minds of Kathy being whisked away by evil. They kept waiting for Kathy to come back through the window and make a grand entrance. That will never happen. No, they saw it.
She’s gone, forever.
Jesse punched the ground. ‘But why?’ He thought angrily to himself. ‘Why did something so horrible have to happen? One of the boys began to move ever so slowly. Yes, it was Jesse. He moped over to the window and placed his hands on the wall at shoulder height. He placed his check against the wall as if he was trying to communicate with her.
“What now?” Alex could barely talk without wanting to throw up.
“I…I…” He couldn’t say anything else. ”I’m sorry. I’m so sorry...”
Jesse slid down the wall to his knees and started bawling. Alex soon followed suit.
