Okay, I dunno if this has been made or if the idea has been talked about but...

With the advancement of video game technology over the years I'd like to see a complete change in the way Pokemon battles are handled in the games.

Instead of just having the RPG-style battling where Pokemon just sit there waiting for individual moves to be commanded, why not have actual fluid battles like in Street Fighter or Mortal Combat...except not as graphic.

Each button could correspond to a different move and you would still have a limited number of PP but it would make the battling in the games SO much more fun! I mean when you think about it, the SF/MK format of battling fits perfectly with the Pokemon concept.

I mean simple moves like tackle and scratch would be primary moves and then more of the special abilities could be used with button combos, etc.

You would actually have to think on the fly and react more than calculate. Might not be possible on the DS, but perhaps the Wii? Battling on the Wii could be interesting too.

What do you think?

Nope its good the way it is I would hate it any other way and Gamefreak and/or any other company do not have plans for a Pokemon RPG game on the Wii. NEXT!

No.

The storyline hasn't even deviated a lot. I can't see the actual battle system changing so drastically. And the idea sounds a lot like Smash.

That said, it would be interesting try out a Pokemon game with a different, more flexible style of turn-based battling, but not real-time. And even then, it would have to be relegated to a spin-off. The main series's style of battling isn't going to change much.

There are already many real-time, button-mashing games out there. Such a system of battling would probably end up as a pretty unoriginal spin-off.

The same idea has been discussed many times, and it would only ever work as a side game. Also SSB already exists using a very similar concept. You can't completely overhaul the entire game strategy because of a battle style which could have been implemented when the game was created.

That is one of the best things about Pokemon. Its TBS, so it takes a different type of skill than RTS games, which require reaction timing and multi-tasking. Many players chose to follow this franchise BECAUSE it is one of the best TBS RPGs that exists. It may attract a new fan base, but most RTS lovers find Pokemon "too childish". I do not see why a Street Fighter/Mortal Combat-style game wouldn't be supported by DS, as DS can do 3D fairly well.

Oh, no! I'd never be able to play again! One of the reasons I like and can play Pokemon is that they take turns, and you can choose their attacks. Just not very good at thinking, reacting quickly, etc. Maybe if you could change the settings, and choose which battle style you want.

I empathize with the nay-sayers on this, but when I think about it... something in the middle would be okay. Like so:

Everything is sort of turn-based, but on time guages, so it's still real time. You don't move around and button mash, so the strategy is still there, but it adds the importance of timing to a game. Some moves would take longer to execute than others, however, and charging times for moves would be reflected as such. Pokémon with slower speeds would have slower time gauges.

That would be fun, I think. And challenging. :D Especially with double battles. But I do agree that the system now is much, much better than full-on real-time, and I'm a real-time lover in every sense. Just not with Pokémon... kinda takes from the game.

There's nothing wrong with making changes to the battle system, but a complete genre transplant is not a good idea in the main series. A spinoff would be fine, but not the core games.

I think we'll continue to see small modifications to the system to the point where Gen 6 might be fairly unrecognizable when compared to Gen I aside from the 4 moves and type format, but not within one generation. Frankly, as the Final Fantasy series shows, rebooting an RPG battle system with every title is dicey at best.
