G4 interviews Junichi Masuda, Takeshi Kawachimaru: Game Freak staffers discuss Pokémon Platinum

Game Freak's Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru will attend the Nintendo World Store's Pokémon Platinum release party on Saturday in New York City, and since they've been in the United States, G4's Raymond Padilla interviewed the pair about Pokémon Platinum and the franchise in general.

Great stuff. Does anyone know yet what they're going to give out through the mystery gift?I can go to this event but I don't really want to go if it's something dull. Also, don't you have to play the game a bit before you have access to the mystery gift? If that's true then that is not fair for the people like me buying a Gen 4 game for the first time

Um. Masuda's gonna be there. I'd go even if it were dull as hell.

Unfortunately I'm in Chicago.

My question is that... did Spinda inspire the overhaul with Gen III, then? Is Spinda the cause of incompatibility between GSC and RSE? Because if so... SPINDA SUCKS.

The incompatibility between Generations II and III is, if I'm not mistaken, for no reason other than what Altomare Latios stated way back when the DS first came out:
I couldn't get this post to show up in the Search results, but thankfully I had it saved on my computer

The only problem why GBA games can't hook up to GB games is because the GBA is a 32-bit computing system. The GB is an 8-bit computing system. The bit-chain of the data is different and therefore is not compatible. It is possible to convert bit chains, but this is only for re-writeable memory, such as HDDs. However in the process all the data gets wiped clean. A bit chain is a type of format of data, and reformating to a different bit chain does what it says, reformats.

It's not feasible.

DS is a 32-bit system, it should and it will work.

With that in mind, I'd say Spinda was inspired by the stat overhaul, rather than the other way around.

So if it's because of the upgrade from 8 to 32-bit... does that mean there's no real future issues of compatibility? I mean, hell, most OSes haven't even moved to 64-bit, and are only doing so so as to avoid the 2038 crash, so why would the DS's successor use anything but a 32-bit architecture? Right? What would be the advantage of having a 64-bit handheld?

I suppose it's pretty difficult to argue with the people who actually designed these characters in the first place, but I can't help but feel inclined to disagree when they cite Pichu and Spinda as examples of 'well thought out' pokemon. But I guess that's just how it goes when you're someone from the outside looking in.

Junichi Masuda dodged the question about Arceus quite well; the interviewer was expecting to get an idea of what Pokémon would succeed Arceus, but Masuda wasn't even willing to talk about Arceus itself.

I believe that this may be the first time that Masuda, or anyone else at Game Freak for that matter, has mentioned IVs and EVs. It is interesting to know that the team working on the battle system (most prominently Shigeki Morimoto, who is currently the battle director and was the director of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald) are immersed in the metagame by way of receiving feedback and and battling themselves.

My only gripe is that Takeshi Kawachimaru discussed the Battle Frontier in a fair amount of detail without so much as referencing Emerald. It goes to say a lot.

This would bug me too. But the event is four hours, and I think all you need to be able to download the mystery gift would be to get a pokedex and to the first town with a Pokecenter/mart, right? Can anyone verify that?

Even if it is something dull (seriously Nintendo World, I never bothered downloading your Pikachu that knows present), the event itself should still be fun. I guess we'll find out tomorrow! Any other nerds going to this, or am I the only one? :p
