________________________________________________________________________________

Uhh...so...hi! I haven't done this in a long time, so I don't know how to properly start. But anyways I took a long hiatus from Pokemon, and about a week ago I decided I'd try to make a some-what serious competitive team. I went into this totally blind, I just used whatever knowledge I had from 4th gen, and whatever I could remember from the start of 5th gen. The only thing I used Smogon for was to see which Pokemon was in which tier and to get the sets.

Now when I was going into this, I wanted a team that supported Jirachi. Now I was never actually good at making a team that is centered around one Pokemon, because they have all somehow failed in the past. And I never thought this team would actually win a single match because it just seems so random even to me. But so far it's like 10-0, so I thought I'd try to get some opinions on it before I started getting destroyed and then frustrated. So yeah, my first pick was Jirachi, the paraflinch set. I then slowly started looking at what would cover his weaknesses, and so on.

More will (hopefully) be explained below as to what the hell I was thinking :eh:

Spr_b_5b_485.png

Supernova (Heatran) (F) @ Air Balloon
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Stealth Rock

Weaknesses:
- Fighting: Gliscor, Latias, Jellicent.
- Water: Latias, Jellicent.
- Ground: Latias, Gliscor.

I chose Heatran mostly due to the huge help he would be of taking Fire attacks for Jirachi, especially due to Sun being pretty common and very easy to set up boosting those fire attacks. I also thought he'd make a decent Pokemon to set up SR due to Air Balloon, and also he's not that frail so if I know he can take a hit, I'll just set up my SR in that time. Now I'm a lot more cautious as to how I used to play. Back in Gen 4, if I lost a lead for SR, I was happy. Here I'll be much happier to save SR for another time and also save my Pokemon in the process. I chose Earth Power for the obvious reason and that's to take out another Heatran (people seem to really ignore the little message that pops up saying "Supernova is floating on a balloon"), and since he is fairly bulky without any EVs added to his HP and/or Defenses, he can go head to head with some Pokemon and either KO with Earth Power, or at least leave a pretty decent dent. I chose Fire Blast for STAB, and also since I'm already putting in 252 into SpAtk, I might as well go for the bigger risk higher reward fire attack. I haven't had a reason to switch to Flamethrower or Lava Plume yet so I'll keep it for now. And finally HP Ice is for Dragon's, especially the one's that are choice and attacking Latias. Tran can easily either OHKO them or again, leave a decent dent to where I can work around killing them, or they will most likely die on the switch in to SR. For some reason Gyarados seems to be the most common Pokemon I have seen, but I can work around him pretty well since everyone just switches Gyara in, and immediately follows with a DD for some reason lol.

Grace (Latias) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Dragon Pulse
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Weaknesses:
- Bug: Heatran, Gliscor, Jellicent.
- Ghost: Heatran, Blissey.
- Ice: Heatran, Jirachi, Jellicent.
- Dragon: Heatran, Jirachi.
- Dark: Heatran.

Latias is meant to be kind of a bulky sweeper. She's immune to Ground attacks aimed at Jirachi and Heatran, so I figured if it comes to it I can easily set up even if I have to take damage, especially since I have Recover and Lefties. But so far, the only thing I've used her for is if she's like the 2nd to last, or the last Pokemon remaining, and I need to finish off the other guy. With 349 speed, she's pretty damn fast and can take a decent hit...so I haven't had a problem yet. But since her role is not to be a revenge Poke, I think she might not fit well into the team...and this team really does lack a decent sweeper. Anyways I choice Recover for well...recovery. CM to boost, Dragon Pulse for a nice strong STAB attack, and HP Fire to get rid of the likes of Scizor, Skarm, and Ferrothorn.

Juggernaut (Blissey) (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Aromatherapy
- Softboiled
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic

Weaknesses:
- Fighting: Gliscor, Latias, Jellicent.

Bliss is the very last Pokemon I chose for the team. She is here because I needed something that I know can take almost any hit, and also provide a status removing attack because to be honest, it really get's on my nerves when say Gliscor get's burned, Jirachi get's paralyzed, or Jellicent becomes poisoned. That's basically her role...take (mostly) Special Attacks, heal others from status, stall all day until the other person runs out of ideas and/or sanity. I'm sure the set is pretty self-explanatory. Standard Bliss set imo, although I'm thinking of replacing Softboiled with Wish and maybe Toxic with Protect, although I'm not sure if Aromatherapy on a Wish Bliss is legal or not.

Spr_b_5b_385.png

theeEnd (Jirachi) @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 224 SDef / 32 Spd
Careful Nature (+SDef, -SAtk)
- Iron Head
- Substitute
- Fire Punch
- Body Slam

Weaknesses:
- Ground: Latias, Gliscor.
- Fire: Heatran, Latias, Jellicent.

The Poke the team is supposed to be built around. I wanted this set mostly because I wanted to win with a cheap and easy tactic, and that is to abuse Serene Grace with Iron Head and Paralysis. I usually bring Jirachi in if Latias needs the support to take a Dragon or Ice move, or if I know for a fact that I can set up on the Pokemon. Iron Head is self explanatory, Fire Punch is for those bulky steel types like Scizor and Ferrothorn, and Sub is to try to set up on them while they are setting up or maybe even switching out. Now the reason I chose Body Slam over Thunder Wave is because I figure I would only needed it for Gengar and Chandelure. Chandelure I think I can work around, but Gengar would be a really big problem for this team IMO. I can 2HKO with Iron Head, but he can do some serious damage to Jirachi in the process. And if he has Sub, I basically waste a turn using Thunder Wave and let him off with a Sub and now I'm completely exposed and have to waste a turn killing the sub while he deals massive damage with either Shadow Ball, Focus Blast or HP Fire. Body Slam is much more useful when not facing those two Pokemon. Especially since I've seen Taunt Gyarados on almost every single team I've faced, it's easy to get around the taunt and paralyze them while they are taunting or setting up a DD.

Reaper (Gliscor) (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Earthquake
- Protect
- Ice Fang
- Toxic

Weaknesses:
- Ice: Jirachi, Heatran, Jellicent.
- Water: Jellicent, Latias.

This was the 3rd Pokemon I chose for the team IIRC. I really like the new ability he has, and with his pretty damn decent stats he is a great support for not only Jirachi, but Bliss, Heatran and Jellicent. I chose Protect for scouting, EQ for STAB, Ice Fang to take down other Gliscor's trying to set up, or just any physical Dragon that is also trying to set up. Toxic is there because poisoning other walls is pretty nice and makes my life easier, and also Fling would only get me one use...which I thought was pretty stupid.

Spr_b_5b_593_m.png

Tempest (Jellicent) (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Taunt

Weaknesses:
- Ghost: Heatran, Blissey.
- Dark: Heatran.
- Grass: Heatran, Latias, Jirachi.
- Electric: Gliscor, Latias.

And finally the last Pokemon. I honestly just wanted a 5th gen Pokemon on the team, but he does fill a nice role for the team. He can take pretty much any incoming Fire attack aimed at Jirachi and Heatran, and he's also nice to have around for the Fighting immunity which he gives to Bliss and Heatran. Another thing is Taunt, it's really nice being able to Taunt another wall trying to set up it's stuff, basically leaves me with many options. He's also nice to have around for Gyarados. I immediately switch this guy in when a Gyarados comes in. If they don't have Taunt or Sub, I Will-O-Wisp, and if they do I can Recover + Scald until they eventually get burned, and I can work my way around them. Although Scald and Will-O-Wisp does seem a bit dumb to me, and I might be able to fill it with a better move. Also I'm contemplating on whether or not a Pokemon like Suicune or Vaporeon would be a better choice over him.

Anyways that's about it. Umm closing thoughts...Tyranitar could give this team a hard time...and with Ttar being so diverse, it takes me a while to figure out which set they have. As I also mentioned, Gengar could also be a problem, even though I do have Bliss on my team, he's still pretty scary IMO, as he could wreck the rest of the team in one to two shots. Also I'm pretty sure I'm missing some other things so if you could points those out I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

@Sublime

Seems like a pretty solid, well-rounded team with very good synergy indeed. What currently gives you problems, if anything?

For Blissey, definitely replace Softboiled and Toxic with Wish and Protect. Protect is great for scouting, as it always was and you already have enough Toxic-abusers. I'd imagine Wish support would be very beneficial to this team, as there's a lack sufficient recovery. Not to mention, Blissey won't be Toxicing much as guts Conkeldurr or Machamp will switch in or most Pokemon will try and Sub on it. You also have two other Toxic users, so yeah. Also, Wish and Aromatherapy isn't legal, but Wish and Heal Bell is by breeding with Skitty or Delcatty.

For Gliscor, I'dd replace the 72 SDef EVs with 72 Speed EVs, which is the standard set letting it outspeed Skarm and some others, iirc. You could always try Fling + Acrobatics over Ice Fang and Toxic, which is better overall unless you want to counter Dragons especially. You could also try and swap out Ice Fang/Toxic for Sub or SD, hopefully leading to suprising sweeps.

Apart from those two minor things, very solid and best of luck with this team!

@Synthesis I thought Wish + Heal Bell was only legal because Heal Bell is a HG/SS tutor move. If I remember right, Wish is an event-only move for Blissey, so breeding is irrelevent. Minor nitpick.

@Scary FishAh, that makes more sense (I couldn't find Wish anywhere on Blissey's 'pedia page so I assumed it was an egg move).

@CommandurrClowncrete Protect is definitely better than Taunt, but Taunt is handy nonetheless. Protect is a staple on Toxic Orb Gliscor.

@Sublime I missed your last part about Gengar and Ttar. SubDD Scrafty with a Jolly nature outspeeds and OHKOs Gengar after a DD and OHKOs Ttar either way. Scrafty gets a lot of opportunities to set up a DD, and it can live an unboosted Focus Blast from Gengar, iirc. You could also try Mienshao, Infernape, Alakazam (provided Ttar has no SDef investment) among others.

@Synthesis

Protect is absolutely inferior to taunt. yeah free 12% recovery is great but it comes at a cost of gliscor becoming a complete setup fodder, once your opponent discovers that you lack it.

Thanks guys. I've been testing a whole bunch of different things and so far most things haven't been working out better than what I have down in the OP. I'll keep testing and make changes to whatever ends up working better.

I'm just wondering if there has been anything that has come close to sweeping you.

I think the Bulky DD Gyara can sweep me effortlessly if done right. But so far everyone that's used a Gyara against me has been a complete dumbass so there is that.

I've been testing some sweepers too, and I'm trying to also get used to all the Pokemon that are being used...and I swear I see Gastrodon, Ttar, Mew, Rotom-W on every damn team. If that's the case I don't really need to change anything or much at all since those are so predictable.

you know what? i would suggest a spiker for your squad. bulky offense or balanced teams covet spikes. Yours is no exception.

Another Pokemon I would suggest is dragonite instead of latias. I will suggest one of 3 sets: offensive dd, parashuffler, choice banded. Dragonite does beautifully with Jirachi from my experience.

I agree that this team could use Spikes. Why not utilize some extra hazards when you're packing a decent spinblocker? Skarmory could fill this role perfectly and take the place of Gliscor.

If you end up of going with Skarmory, ScarfTar could replace Blissey to patch up this team's new found weaknesses to things like +0 Speed Terrakion and SD Lucario. It would also help you remove other annoyances like Starmie, Gengar, and Lati@s that can impair your own Latias's sweeping potential.
