The only story-writing experience I have is completion of NaNoWriMo two years ago. This will be a fairly long story, with possible sequels. It will contain some profane language here and there. Hopefully, I won't abandon this like I do with other whims >.>

Anyways, I did most of the general planning for the story as well as the first chapter yesterday. It's the most original idea I've had for a story, in my opinion, so I hope it will be good. It takes place in Sinnoh and will follow the game more or less. I expect it to follow the game less and less later in the story, though it will have Team Galactic's actions the same for the most part. It may seem like a generic story at first, but that will change as time goes on.

I would appreciate any advice / constructive criticism, as well as the locations of any errors within my story. I'm not sure on how long I want my chapters to be, and may lengthen this first chapter when I work on chapter 2. Anyways, on with the story.

Chapter 1: Arrival

Sean tossed one of his pokéballs up into the air, catching it each time it fell. He caught it one last time, sitting up as he did so. He ran his fingers through his short, brown hair, sighing and thinking at the same time.

Why did my parents have to make me go to Sinnoh instead of letting me stay in Johto? I don't give a damn about Team Rocket. Who cares if they were returning after a year of inactivity. I could have handled them if they tried to mess with me. It's not like I'm ten or something, like in the older days when little ten-year-olds got to go on their journeys. I'm sixteen, I can take care of myself.

His thoughts were interrupted when a voice spoke over the intercom, "We are fifteen minutes away from the southwestern port of Sinnoh, near Sandgem. Be ready to exit the ship once we arrive."

Sean, knowing that we was starting his journey at Sinnoh no matter what, got up to pack all of his belongings. He didn't have much other than clothes, all of which were shorts and t-shirts, all varying colors of light brown. The only important things that he had brought with him were his two pokémon: his starting pokémon Penn, a Cyndaquil, and his newly caught Mareep, which he had decided to call Jewel.

When he finished packing up, he looked up at the clock and noticed he still had ten minutes left. He grabbed the pokéball he had been tossing earlier and released Penn from the pokéball. It was a small pokémon. It was yellow for the most part, except for the turquoise that ran across the top of its head and back, as well as four red circles on its back, which would release fire during battle.

"Hey boy. We're not going to be traveling in Johto." The Cyndaquil tilted its head slightly to the side, confused. "Yeah, I know. We're going to be traveling through Sinnoh instead. There will probably be a lot of pokémon you and I have never seen before, and there probably won't be any others like you or Jewel, but that's alright. Good thing I got you as a partner before my parents made me leave Johto, right?" Penn showed his agreement by jumping on Sean's shoulder.

The ship had been stopped for a little while, and the other passengers were all leaving. Sean took off his old, dirty shoes and tossed them into the trash, replacing them with new white shoes that would last him a while. "Well, I guess it's time to go." He got up and returned Penn to his pokéball, continuing out the door. As he was walking on the edge of the boat, he stopped to look out into the sea.

One day, when I'm stronger, I'll return to Johto, whether my parents want me to or not. I'll get rid of Team Rocket permanently for making me leave Johto.

He continued to stare for a few more seconds, then slowly turned around and left the boat.

--------------------

After traveling north for a little while, Sean had arrived at his destination: Professor Rowan's Lab. Even though he had already acquired a starter pokémon, he still needed to get registered for the Sinnoh League, and the lab was the closest place. It was off-white and only a story tall, unlike the other houses in the area, but it was very wide and a little secluded. In fact, it looked a lot like Professor Elm's lab. Not caring to stare at the building any longer, Sean walked through the doors. Upon entering, he saw a large man in a white lab coat talking to a boy and a girl. Apparently, Sean had arrived when two new trainers, like him, were getting their first pokémon.

While Sean was looking around at all the weird machines that were also similar to, but not the same, those in Professor Elm's lab, the man in the white lab coat looked up and noticed him, calling out across the room, "Ah, you must be Sean."

Upon hearing his name, Sean looked towards the man, "Uh, yeah. I'm Sean."

"Come on over here," replied the man, "I'd like to introduce you to these two." Sean, upon being asked, walked towards the trio. "By the way," continued the man as Sean neared, "I'm Professor Rowan." The professor extended his hand and Sean shook it. "These two trainers here," he indicated the two Sean had noticed earlier, "are new trainers like you, although they haven't received their starter pokémon yet. By the way, what pokémon did you choose in Johto?" The two others looked at Sean at the mention of a starter from Johto.

"Oh, um," Sean began as he grabbed his pokéball and released Penn, "I chose a Cyndaquil. I've also got a Mareep."

"Oh wow!" exclaimed the girl, speaking for the first time, "I've never seen one of those before. What's its name?"

"Uh, his name is Penn, with two 'n's."

"It's one of the three starters of Johto. It's the fire starter, which you can tell by the red spots on its back and yellow underbelly. The grass starter is called Chikorita while the water starter is called Totodile. Sean, do you know what the starters for Sinnoh are?"

"Not really, I never thought to look them up, since I already had Penn."

"Of course," replied Rowan, "you'll be able to see them in a few minutes. But first, I'd like to introduce you to these two, Lauren and Chris," he indicated the two to his sides.

Lauren extended her hand, "Hi, I'm Lauren."

Sean took her soft hand and shook it, "Hey, I'm Sean." Until now, he hadn't seen what Lauren looked like. She had wavy, light brown hair that went down a few inches past her shoulders, which matched her hazel eyes. She was wearing a dark brown shirt and blue jeans. Sean took an instant liking to her and, from what he saw, she did, too.

"Hey, my name's Chris," said the boy, taking Sean's attention away from Lauren. Chris had light brown hair with hints of blonde throughout it and dark brown eyes; he was more or less Sean's height, but a slightly larger build; he wore a red and blue shirt and blue pants. Sean sensed a confidence about Chris, replying with a simple, "Hey."

"Now then," began Rowan, "it's time for you two to choose your starter pokémon. There are three choices of a grass-, water-, or fire-type starter. These three are Turtwig, the grass-type tiny leaf pokémon; Piplup, the water-type penguin pokémon; and Chimchar, the fire-type chimp pokémon."

He released each one as he said its name. The first one, Turtwig, looked sortof like a green turtle with a yellow jaw and yellow feet, as well as a brown shell. It also had two leaves on the top of its head. The second was Piplup, which was blue, with what looked like an odd, blue hoodie. It had white around its eyes and light blue leading up to its yellow beak. Its feet were yellow, too, and the rest of its body was light blue, with the exception of two small white circles on its chest. The last pokémon to be released was Chimcar, which looked like a small, orange chimp with a fire on the end of its tail and a light tan stomach and face. None of them looked like the starters at Johto.

"When you've decided, choose the pokémon you would like to start with," the professor told the two.

Almost immediately, Chris walked over to the Piplup and picked it up, "I'm going with Piplup."

"Good choice, here's Piplup's pokéball." Rowan handed Chris the pokéball.

After returning Piplup to its pokéball, Chris left with a hasty, "bye," saying he'd head to the first gym at Oreburgh.

Sean looked back at Lauren, who was lightly biting her lips while looking at the two remaining pokémon, deep in thought. After a little while of looking back and forth between the two, she finally walked over to the Chimchar and picked it up. "I'll take this Chimchar, which I'll name Charm."

She, too, left the lab, bidding the remaining two people farewell. As Sean was about to leave, he was stopped by Rowan, "One second, Sean. You don't know much about the geography of Sinnoh, so I'll give you a map. The marked cities are those with badges. As you can see, the closest is the Mine Badge in Canalave, but you won't be able to go there at this time, seeing as you don't have a pokémon that can carry you across the water and the ferries are out of order. The next closest is Oreburgh, which is where Chris is headed to, apparently. If you want, you can stop at Jubilife or continue through to the east to Oreburgh. It's your choice. Do you understand?" Sean nodded. "Also, I've already registered you for the Sinnoh league with this pokédex," he picked up a small red device that looked different than the ones in Johto, and handed it to Sean. "Ok, you can go now, that's all I needed to give you."

Sean was finally going to start his journey. Maybe it won't be too bad in Sinnoh, he thought, thinking of Lauren, as he opened the door to exit the lab.

I italicized the thoughts to make it clearer. Unfortunately, it's more tedious to do in forum posts because you need to add the tags, but oh well.

I edited some more stuff on the first chapter, since I had posted it almost immediately after writing it. I've never liked re-reading what I write, which is why my essays don't always get the best grades. I made sure to go over this chapter, though, a day after writing it. I can't decide on what to call the chapter, though.

Chapter 2: Head Start / "Even"

As Sean was closing the door to the lab, he was startled when someone said, "So how come you're starting in Sinnoh instead of Johto?"

Sean looked to the right, noticing Lauren had waited outside, "Oh, well, have you ever heard of Team Rocket?"

"No, not really, other than the fact that they caused a lot of trouble in Johto and Kanto a while back," she replied.

"Well," continued Sean, "it seems like they're trying to get back in business or something, and my parents didn't want me going around as a new trainer with them vying for power again. In fact, they were the reason the age for new trainers was raised to sixteen from ten. It was only Kanto and Johto that had put that age limit at first, but the two regions didn't want people leaving for the sole reason of allowing their children to become trainers. They convinced the other regions that Team Rocket might one day extend its influence, and it was better to preemptively change the age. They also added on that the kids who became trainers would also get more time in school. As if the stuff they teach in school really matters to a pokémon trainer."

During the discussion, the two had started walking northwards to Jubilife. "They never told us the reason the age limit was changed at our school," replied Lauren.

"We were never told, either, but my father, having had some experiences with Team Rocket himself, told me the truth. But even then, I still had to leave Johto," Sean sighed. "The age limit change still doesn't make any sense, though. All it does is make it so trainers start later. They still would have started as brand new trainers with more experience."

"I guess they figured older trainers, regardless of their skill, would be able to handle themselves better," suggested Lauren.

"Yeah, I guess . . . Hey, what's that?"

Lauren, confused at the apparent change in topic, looked around, "Huh? What's what?"

"Starly, the Starling Pokémon: this small pokémon is usually with a large flock, so that it can defend itself against stronger pokémon," said a voice from Sean's pokédex.

It was a small, gray bird. It had a dark gray head with a little feather sticking up on top of its head, with a white face and a dark gray tipped beak. The tips of its wings were a darker shade of gray, as well as the two outer tail feathers. There was a small, white circle on its breast.

"Huh," Sean started, reaching for Jewel's pokéball, "it's sort of like Pidgey. I wonder if I should catch it or use it to give Jewel some more experience," he thought out loud, looking at the pokéball, "it looks pretty weak, though."

"Well, if you can't decide," began Lauren, "then I'm gonna catch it!" she said, sending out her only pokémon: Charm, the Chimchar. "Charm, scratch that Starly!" The orange chimp ran at the confused bird, apparently lost. It scratched the Starly on the back, taking it by surprise and confusing it further. "Follow up by burning it with ember!" The chimp launched small flames at the Starly, defeating it. Lauren grabbed one of her pokéballs and threw it straight at the fallen bird. After a few shakes, the pokéball locked down and the Starly was caught. Lauren ran over and picked up the pokéball and held it over her head, exclaiming, "Haha, caught my first pokémon!"

"Hey, wait, what? I was gonna battle it!" Sean protested.

"It's not my fault you were so slow, as if you'd never seen one in your life," Lauren taunted Sean.

"I haven't, we don't have those in Johto," countered Sean.

"Too bad for you. Come on out, Star."

"Oh, wow, that's sure original," Sean muttered.

"Shut it, you're just jealous," she snapped back. All Sean could do was sigh. The two continued to walk towards Jubilife, not caring much to talk to each other.

--------------------

After five minutes of silence, Sean noticed a small grass bud-like pokémon. It was a light green bud with two sprouting leaf-like things that twisted at the top of its yellow face, which was over what looked like a green bib. Aside from two small, green-yellow feet, it was only a head.

Sean, not wanting to let Lauren get another pokémon before he could, slowed his pace, eventually walking backwards, allowing Lauren to walk further ahead. Once she was far enough away, he released his Cyndaquil, "Penn, go; burn that green thing with ember!"

Lauren, startled by the shout and how far away it seemed, almost fell over as she turned around and saw Sean attacking something with his pokémon. She ran over to see what he was battling, but he had already thrown a pokéball of his own at it, and it was shaking. It finally locked, and Sean walked over to pick it up.

"What was that? What did you catch?" asked the confused Lauren.

"I have no idea," smiled Sean, releasing the bud pokémon and spraying it with a potion. "All I know is that her name is Clara." The small pokémon seemed to accept the name and smiled as Sean pointed his pokédex at the creature.

"Budew, the Bud Pokémon: it enjoys spreading its pollen during springtime, though its pollen may have adverse effects."

Sean patted the green bud on the head and returned it to its pokéball, while Lauren was starting to realize what Sean had done, "What was that for!?"

Sean, trying to act innocent, asked, "What was what for?"

"You purposefully stayed back so that I wouldn't be able to get it," replied Lauren, annoyed.

"Why would I want to do that?" asked Sean, with an innocent smile on his face. Lauren, however, wasn't in a cheerful mood and shoved Sean a little before turning around and walking again.

Sean, not wanting to get on her bad side, jogged to her side and tried to explain. "I'm sorry. I guess I was a little annoyed at you getting that Starly earlier, when I wanted to battle it, and this was sort of a way to get even."

"'Even'? Didn't you say you had another pokémon, though?" asked Lauren, her tone slightly softer than before.

"Yeah, Jewel, my Mareep, but I didn't have any Sinnoh pokémon and I've only seen two, not counting the three Sinnoh starters. You're right though, you only had one pokémon while I already had two . . ."

"Well . . ." sighed Lauren, "I'm sorry too, then, for catching Star before you had a chance. What is a Mareep, anyways?" Lauren asked, wanting a change of subject.

"Oh," began Sean, glad she had changed the topic, "you don't have them in Sinnoh; I'll show you Jewel." He expanded one of his pokéballs and released his Mareep in a beam of red light. The sheep pokémon bah'd as it was released. It had a blue body with fluffy, yellow wool all around it's body. It had odd, conical ears with alternating black and yellow stripes around it. The tail was in the same fashion, except longer and with a small, yellow orb at the end of its tail.

Lauren bent down and hugged the sheep. "Awww, it's so cute!" she said as she continued to hug the sheep. Jewel bah'd happily.

"When it evolves, it might not be as cute as you thought it was before, though," Sean explained to Lauren.

"What do you mean," she asked, confused as to how such a cute pokémon like Mareep would not be cute.

"You'll see later, as a surprise. Good thing these pokédex seem to only display the information on pokémon from Sinnoh. I guess that kinda gives me an edge," he laughed.

"I'd still beat you, even if I didn't know much about your pokémon," Lauren winked at Sean, causing him to blush a little.

"Anyways, how much further do you think till we get to Jubilife, anyways?" he asked Lauren.

"Not much further, I come here all the time to shop." Sean rolled his eyes. "Not that much, though. It's mainly just to see all the pokémon on the way there. I think I can see the lights from the city!" Lauren shouted, running towards the city. "I bet I can beat you there!" she yelled back, with a substantial lead.

"What? Hey!" Sean shouted to her as he started to run after here, "You got a head start!"
