Try these rules in your game to make it a little more challenging.

1. Have the same number of Pokemon on your team as the Gym Leader, Rival, or Champion depending on who you are facing.
2. Have the same level Pokemon on your team as the Gym Leader, Rival, or Champion also depending on who you are facing.
3. Don't have multiple types on your team (an exception to this would be secondary typing so if you had a Swampert a Water and Ground type, you could still have a Diglet a Ground type)

These few rules may give you a slight challenge to an easy game making it a little more entertaining.

I also have a few things you can do to make your life slightly easier.

1. If you have an Emulator and The Pokemon Randomizer then check Impossible Evos in the first tab. This allows you to evolve Pokemon that would otherwise need a trade to evolve.
2. Also in The Randomizer under the last tab you can turn Running Shoes Indoors on so you can go through buildings faster.

Yeah I like that this takes planning but it's not as frustrating as a nuzlocke can be.
