Gunstar Heroes (SEGA Genesis; also on Wii and Xbox 360 marketplaces; I wouldn't know Playstation 3)

Jazz Jackrabbit (old computer game; also similar to older Sonic the Hedgehog)

May not be similar, but do have action, you could try old action flyers like:

Dragon Spirit (I have only played it for NES; you control a dragon; power-ups add heads and/or color to the dragon or alter your attack style)
Raptor (old computer game; you control a YF-22 Raptor fighter jet)
Ikaruga (SEGA game; good luck playing it)
Blazing Lazers (I've only played it for the Turbo Graphix)
 
No, those two put MANLY CHEST HAIR on your chest just by playing them.

Any others are for girly men.

You could try to play I Wanna Be the Guy, though. If you dare. It's a freeware game.
 
I wanna be the guy is not suggested. I almost smashed the PC with it.
 
There was a Gunstar Heroes for the GBA, too :p
Not as good as the Genesis one, but still freaking awesome :p
