After my less then enjoyable experiences with both Simpsons games on the GameCube (Hit and Run, Road Rage), for some reason I bought the Simpsons Game for the Xbox 360 for about $40 (Australian mind you) brand new. Needless to say I finished the game within a week and I consiter it one of the best games I have ever played.

Any others?

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. I thought it would be awful because the critics gave it such low scores, but this is one of the few times I completely ignored what GameInformer says. I first convinced myself to play it after my little brother moved out and forgot his Mystery Dungeon Blue, but as soon as I picked it up I was hooked.

Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2.

I heard nothing but crap about this game, but I got it for christmas, so I played it. Now I'm addicted to it, along with my brother. We played almost non-stop last Monday.

Pokemon Ranger. It had bad reviews on IGN but wasnt that bad.

Cooking Mama.

I bought it because it was cheap and I was curious. I wasn't expecting too much other than "cook stuff".

It's one of my favorite DS timewasters now.

Hotel Dusk is another one. I got it brand new for free and I thought it would be crap due to it being a novel game, but it wasn't.

The Ace Attorney series. Who knew a series about lawyers would be so amazing? You can't even describe it to people without funny looks!

I was under the impression (before I played it of course) that the Guitar Hero series was shithouse. I was wrong.

I bought Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Timenot long after it came out. I saw reviews on it, and throught I wasted my money on a crappy game, but I was so very wrong. The game is friggin' addicting!

The Harvest Moon series. A lot of people would assume that a game about farming would be extremely boring, and I thought so too until that one birthday... When my older brother sent me Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life...

I tried the game and loved it. I now own 4 Harvest moon games.

I didn't think Harvest Moon was going to be as good as it turned out to be and Initially I never thought the Mario Party series was going to be as entertaining as it ended up being.
Half Life was also a surprise at the time because when I bought the game, it had just been released and noone knew about it.

SuperStardustHD
I bought it just to get PSN trophies, but it turned out to be quite addicting and enjoyable

The GBA Astro Boy game. How could that possibly be anything more than cheap shovelware?

Then I saw it was made by Treasure.

I didn't think I'd get into Animal Crossing until PokemonTrainerLisa loaned me her copy. Now I can't stop playing Wild World and I really can't wait for City Folk to come out!

Another person who didn't think the idea of running a farm was a fun idea. I finally gave in when the Mineral Town series for GBA came out, and once I played it, I was an instant Harvest Moon fan.

And based on all the reviews I read prior to my decision to buy it, I didn't think I'd like Star Ocean 3 past the character designs...or at least the first disk. Instead it blew me away with the plot, the characters, the environment, NPCs I actually cared about, a twist that I loved--reviewers be damned--and a game I've replayed more times than I care to count. I didn't think I'd like it all around...and it's been my favorite game since I played it. O' ye of little faith applies here.

Bleach: The Blade of Fate. I had gotten it as a gift last December, and that night, I decided to play it. Generally, anime games aren't that good, and after my experiences with Naruto: Ninja Council 3, I wasn't expecting much. A few hours later, I stopped playing for a moment to eat, then got right back on. Needless to say, I think it's a great game, and I can't wait to get the sequel.

Army of Two. I've heard mixed reviews on this game (mostly stuff from the bad side) but after spending an entire weekend with a friend playing Gears of War in co-op, he asked if I wanted to play this game next time (and Army of Two is played along the line of Gears of Wars). I decided to go ahead and jump into the game with him and I actually find it to be a decent game, specifically in co-op mode. In fact, the game was practically made as a co-op game, going as far that I've seen advertisement for the game saying (and me taking the advice for the game), "Don't go into the battlefield alone" or something to that degree. Besides, I heard the partner AI isn't all that reliable. But like I said, the game is more about co-op and the rest of the game mechanics are good that I can say it's a decent game.

I found Shadow The Hedghog (GCN version) in the bargain bin at EB games last Thursday for $15 brand new, only reason I got it was because I enjoyed SA2 and SA1 (not so much Heroes). I've played through the game for a few hours now and I reckon it's a great game even though it got really poor reviews.

Off topic but I also bought Naruto: Ninja Destiny for the DS ($20 bargain) and was pretty pissed when I found out the PAL version doesn't any voices. :-(
