I often wonder in the anime how they can tell a Pokemon's strength. I know in the games they have stats, but do we know the stats and the abilities that they have because of special devices, like little computers or something, or are we just that in tune with Pokemon?

Paul uses his dex to scan for moves, so that is one way. There have also been a number of computer-using trainers in the anime that try to use numbers to their advantage, but they were all beaten by the random factors involved in a real battle.

it's possible to gauge a human's strength in real life (ex. squeezing a device that could measure one's grip), so I guess the same could just apply to Pokemon. For that matter, I recall in the Crystal Special, Bashou and Buson were able to measure the strength in Raikou's forearms and jaw after it attacked their machine (I think the measurements were around 90... I don't know what the number represents aside from just being some random factor. If it was just a fun reference to the RPG stats, it'd be off considering 90 is kinda low for a Pokemon you encounter at level 50 in the wild).

1. How do we know that the Pokemon in the anime are the levels they are in the games? Mewtwo is Level 70 in the games, but he seems more like Level 100 in the anime.

2. The pokemon's abilities are explained in the anime as they are encountered, either by James' Pokemon Reference Cards, or by Brock, explaining what they do. Also, Misty didn't know any of Psyduck's attacks until Dexter (Ash's Kanto Pokedex) explained the four attacks Psyduck had at the time.

I wasn't saying Raikou was actually level 50. I was just implying the possibility that the anime producers were referencing actual game stats just for fun, which as I said, doesn't seem to be the case anyway.

I doubt there is any cohesion between the Anime and the games

Pikachu is level 80 something at the end of G/S - at the end of Johto. Who knows what level he would be in the most recent region ;)

I'd say about Lvl 35-40. I mean every time Ash starts with only Pikachu, Pikachu's level magically drops to Lvl 5 or something. The starting level for starter Pokemon. Id say all the legendaries are around Lvl 70-100, while Ash's Strongest Pokemon, his Charizard is about 55. I say 55 because it is not strong enough to handle Brandon's Dusclops. I have no idea if Ash has called on his Charizard, or not yet. But judging on what I've seen, probably not. Anyway, on topic, the levels I picked for the Pokemon are just estimates, I have no idea if they are even accurate.

yeah what is with the whole lv 1000000 pikachu at the end of a season and then the next season pikuchu is lv 1 WTF!?!?

Hmm...good topic.Pokemon in the anime probably wouldn't have levels because, certain Pokemon need to do certain things to evolve.Example:It is well known for some, that in order for Sneasel to evolve,it must protect something.Due to normally being mean & rash towards many Pokemon. But,in Diamond or Pearl,a Sneasel has to level up at night holding a grip claw....key words :GRIP CLAW & LEVEL UP.There are many things in the anime & games that are different.Like,Pokemon's cries,leveling,contests....I could go on but won't.

In the Mystery Dungeon episode, Squirtle talks about how they all "went up a level" or something like that.
