IMO atleast. The back sprites in gen 1 were obviously kinda lame but it makes those games unique. The gen 1 front sprites were pretty sweet. red/blue/green had some weird looking pokemon but still looked decent. They remade sprites in yellow and made them look alot better.

Gen 2 front sprites were pretty frigging awesome. They added in alot of shading to these sprites. They also improved back sprites.

Gen 3-on is just all plain colors. They havent added any detail in the sprites, which makes them look kinda lame.

My favorite example is Feraligatr

Here is the gen 2 front sprite.

Notice how it has many different shades and just looks awesome.

Gen 3-4 front sprite (basically look the same)

There is 1 different shade of blue, but it's barely a difference. It is all just plain looking.

They should add more time into sprites.

Idk that's just my 2 cents..what do you think?

..what.

There's two colors in the GenII sprite of Feraligatr (red and blue- nothing else, not even a different shade). I admit that some of the D/P sprites look funky color-wise (I liked Platinum's toned down colors for some of the sprite redos).. but uh, there's a whopping two colors along with black/white in Feraligatr's GenII sprite. >_>

say what you want, but i think Tmg has a point. In the example provided, feraligatr looks a lot more badass in gen 2 than in recent gens, and i feel that this can be said with many of them when juxtaposing sprites. There is a unique (perhaps nostalgic) quality to them--i actually noticed that the other day, when i decided to pick up yellow.

yeah..it may not be the shades or whatnot but they just overall look better

new ones look plain

Like Tina, I really don't get what you're trying to say about shading. The earlier sprites either lacked color altogether or had two to three basic colors to work with. There really wasn't much room for shading at all. As for the actual LOOK of the pokemon though? Dude, I don't care what anyone says, I actually LIKE the G/R/B designs.

Yes some of them suck, I will totally admit this without hesitating, however, did anyone else kind of like the more...I dunno, realistic look to them? Ya they were still cartoony in that typical fantasy RPG sorta way, but compare early sandshrew to later sandshrew. It totally looks more like a real animal than what the anime did to it. While some pokemon look totally awesome with the overly insane cartoony look applied to them, I kind of miss the more basic and life-like creatures. You also have cases where a pokemon looked rather creepy and fierce, but was eventually melted down just so it could be appealing to little kids.

The new ones are better. While I like a few of Gen II's sprites (like Suicune) the new ones look cooler. More color to em.

The new sprites look more like their actual artwork so I don't see how they're worse. Besides, I don't want Pokemon to look like real, life-like animals. I prefer them to look like Pokemon. And Pokemon has been appealing to little kids since the days of Generation I and II. So I don't think they mind if a Growlithe looks more like cartoony, cute puppy than a more realistic looking dog. The whole reason why I like the Pokemon designs is because they are cartoony and gives the world a look of it's own.

The art direction of Pokemon is probably my favorite out of many rpgs anyways.

Though I like the new colors of generation 3 and 4, some of the poses of the earlier two were cooler looking, in my opinion (Mewtwo's yellow sprite comes to mind).

Oh, you mean pelvic thrust Mewtwo?

"Domo! Mewtwo desu! Huuuuuuuuuu!!!" *cue "Livin' la Vida Loca" BGM*

Ehem... Anyway, I personally think that the Gen-III and Gen-IV sprites would be the best, in terms of coloring, hands down.

Of course, some people are gonna say that it's an unfair comparison due to the later gens having more colors at their disposal. I say screw that reason. Of course it would have more colors. It's in the GBA and DS. Why are you guys even comparing something knowing they can't be compared fairly?

Now, for their poses, that's a different story, but I would still be casting my vote for the newer sprites. Although Gen-II had some good poses for their sprites, the same can't be said for Gen-I's mostly fugly sprites (except for Yellow, which was based on the anime art style). We can't blame it though, since Pokemon had only started that time. Let's just say it's sorta like Steamboat Willy's version of Mickey Mouse.

This is my opinion though. Different strokes for different folks, I say, but nostalgia doesn't always mean better...
