Well, Nintendo says that the DSi and the DS are supposed to exist simultaneously, but we all know how that works out. Nintendo obviously can't wait till the DSi's successor comes out, so it looks like it will probably be on the DSi. Hopefully they'll do what they did with Pokemon Gold and Silver, since the "upgrade" from DS to DSi is so minimal and allow DS players to play Gen V with slightly reduced features (like not being able to slap a picture of your face on the main character, I guess). Any thoughts?

I don't think it'll be a DSi exclusive, seeing that it doesn't differ that much from DS and DS Lite.......

I don't know... I mean, I highly doubt it. I think they could release a DS game that takes advantage of it wither it is a remake or Gen V; but the DSi really is like the Gameboy Micro.

It would be fair to say that Gamefreak would have been made aware of the DSi early in its development cycle - which would have been around the same time that Platinum's was kicking into full gear.

It's possible that maybe instead of a Gen IV game focused on the enhancements provided by the DSi that they'll take the opportunity to enhance what's available in D/P/Pl and use that in... (here it comes again) a G/S remake.

They did a similar thing with Crystal - taking full advantage of new hardware on the GBC (and the mobile adapter) to make a game similar to G/S but definitely standing on its own.

It's probable that a new DS proper will be at least 2/3 years away - which is pretty much the same amount of time we could expect to wait for a 5th Generation - so a stall on both sides with the DSi and a new pair of games exclusive (or designed to take full advantage of it), seems like a pretty good combo.

It's also a no-brainer that Nintendo would want Pokemon to take the lead in pushing DSi content since it's far and away the most surefire way to shift systems.

I think the DSi strengthens the likelihood of a G/S remake finally coming to light rather than diminishes it or portends a generation not launching on a new generation of Nintendo portable hardware (which, by now, go hand in hand and makes for a roaring success for both parties).

It should also be of note that now that Ranger 2 is out worldwide this month and Platinum will be out in a couple of months in America at least, that we're coming into one of those vacuums again where there are no new announced Pokemon games. Those are normally followed pretty quickly by a big entry on at least one platform - so I'd say news on whatever's upcoming isn't that far off. And it probably WILL involve the DSi.

Crystal was GBC exclusive.

No, It's more like the GB -> GBC, becuase it actually has new features and can do more. The Gameboy micro was just a tiny GBA. Without GB/GBC compatibility.

The Doctor, I mostly agree with what you're saying, but this gen has been like G2 in many ways, so while i think we'll see a GSCDS within the next two years, I think its possible that we might see G5on the DSi.

However I do realize my theory lessened, primarily because of lack of evidence, and the factc that we're two years into the G4 and no new pokemon (outside of formes, which might be a heavy theme next gen) have been reveled.

In favour of the G5 on "DS2" proper; it is a little more likely since it will likely be out soon (within 1-3 years), since the sole purpose of the DSi is to fight the PSP in Japan and it's not as important anywhere else.

Actually, I was just thinking that we may see G5 as a launch game on "DS2" since they're both expected in roughly the same time frame.

one very important difference to think about though it that there is no gba slot on the DSi which most likely means no migrating pokemon from other games, a feature I quite like, would dissapear if gen 5 was indeed on the DSi and if they did have it it would most likely only be able to work on the DS so there would be no reason to get the DSi

I'm pretty sure if Generation five would be migrating Pokemon from anywhere, it would not be from the Advanced generation.

If Nintendo really wanted to, they could patch Pokemon Ranch to allow Pokemon from Gen IV and V to be kept and for them to be transferred between the two games. I think that's the most likely thing to happen. All they'd need to do is add a few new functions to PR and 120 new simple models at the most.
