This is a one-shot I did for a trade over at the Nuzlocke Group on DeviantArt.
My partner was ChineseViking, and this is an AU battle for hir Nuzlocke.

[Pokemon League Plaza – Sinnoh Region]
The battle had raged furiously, both trainers pushing their Pokemon to their limits, each fighting to be the best, to prove to themselves that they were ready. And now it was down to the final showdown, the last call. Dave looked up at Barry, pushing his glasses up, scarf tails fluttering in the wind.
"Barry! This is it, man. Just like it was that first day – Starter to Starter, Darwin to Empoleon. You ready?"
The blonde trainer grinned, pumping his fist in the air. "You know it! No more second chances, no more items and potions – this is a skill vs skill battle! Empoleon! Let's show these guys how strong we are!"
Dave smirked, turning his head to look at his starter. "Go for it; this is you day just as much as it is mine."
The infernape grinned, and darted onto the field, lithe muscle bunching and loosing as he charged. At the same time, a burst of white light struck the arena as the empoleon to the field. Gold shone to near blinding as the sun's rays struck the cool steel of the water/steel type's claws, talons, and three-pronged beak. Blue feathers ruffled for a moment before sliding into place as Empoleon settled into stance. Darwin stopped two feet from him, flaming mane aglow with red, white, and orange flame. The long tail whipped about as Darwin settled into a classic boxer's stance, rolling back and forth on his heels.
The referee officiating the math looked between the two Pokemon and raised the flags. "Battle round six – COMMENCE!"
"Darwin, get in close and hit him with Close Combat!" Dave called out, grinning as he watched his Pokemon charge the field.
"Empoleon! Hit him with Arial Ace before he gets to close!" Barry yelled, bouncing in excitement.
Both pokemon dove forward, each glowing with energy. Rather than attempt to dodge, Darwin dove forward, shoulder first into the attack, taking the hit with a grunt even as he slammed his fists forward, hammering the steel penguin with blows. Empoleon wasn't just content to sit back and take the hits though – twisting sharply, the water type snapped both wings up, using his ample wing span and steel coating to force Darwin up and away from his more vulnerable belly and blasting the fire-type with Brine.
Or at least, attempting to. Darwin leapt straight up, overtaking the blast and slamming down with Poison Jab, sending his rival face first into the ground. "Come on, that's not all you've got, is it?" He taunted with a grin. "I thought you wanted to try and beat the elite!"
Empoleon looked up with a grin of his own. "Please, I'm just getting started!" Blasting Brine straight at the ground, the water/steel type propelled itself up into the air, back facing the sun. Darwin swore, backing up and trying to see – but all he could make out was the bright halo of gold light that came from looking into the sun.
"Let me know how this treats you!" A harsh voice crowed seconds before a pair of glowing purple-black claws tore through his chest. The infernape tossed back his head and howled, before slamming a Focus Blast directly into the empoleon's face, dislodging the Shadow Claws and shaking off the faint sense of despair the move left behind. He followed up the attack with a furious Fire Blast that Empoleon countered with an equally furious Brine. Both attacks struck dead center in the arena,
Dave and Barry threw their arms in front of their faces at almost the exact moment, ignoring the scalding water as they scanned the arena. Where were they – there!
In a flurry of movement both Pokemon leapt back to their trainers, Empoleon with a grin lighting up his stern countenance and Darwin wearing a wicked smile. Before either trainer could speak the two pokemon launched forward. Empoleon ran forward, charging like a knight to battle, one of his enormous shield-like wings pointed like a spear. Darwin moved like a flame – darting forward with twisting, weaving motions. Empoleon slammed forward with Metal Claw, aiming for the weakened shoulder, just as Darwin, ducked down, slamming his fist up with a swift Poison Jab, an audible crunch resounding through the field.
Without missing a beat the infernape followed through, using Close Combat to keep his opponent off balance as he jabbed and punched, ducked and weaved, mane giving the impression of a fiery cage surrounding the water/steel type. Barry cried out with frustration as he saw his Pokemon knocked back and forth like a punching bag.
"Empoleon! Don't let him push you around like that! If he's going to hit close, blast him right back! Show them we're not a joke!" The blond shouted, gesturing wildly with his arms.
"Darwin, keep up the pressure – you're a natural at this, so kick his ass." Dave smirked at his semi-best friend slash rival from across the arena. There was no way in hell they'd come this far, thrown down with everyone from Dialga and Palkia to Team Galactic to lose to Barry. No way in hell.
"Please Boss," Darwin grinned, rolling his shoulders as he slammed forward, body rushing through the stances, one-two, one-two, uppercut, twist and slam! "There's no need for flattery. I got this."
Empoleon snarled. "I'm not a joke! So why don't you take me SERIOUSLY!" He roared, body lighting up with a furious blue glow. A wing-hand slashed forward and gripped Darwin's fist, stopping the fire/fighting types attack cold.
"Oh crap."
The rush of water – more of a blast than a stream – sent Darwin flying into a tree, and then threw it as the water kept coming.
"Darwin!" Dave yelled, looking horrified.
"I told you we're not a joke! Betcha forgot that Brine doubles when the user is on the ropes and that Empoleon has Torrent! What do you have to say to that?" The blond snapped, with a triumphant smirk on his face.
Dave growled, turning to the side of the woods where Darwin had disappeared. He ran forward, wishing he'd never agreed to a no items battle. He'd just reached the tree line when the blast of the whistle registered.
"Do not step forward! If you intervene in the match you will be immediately disqualified, with victory going to the challenger Barry," the referee intoned, pointing at him with the red flag.
Dave turned red, "What the hell are you talking about! Since when is checking if your pokemon is still fucking alive intervening!"
The referee shot him an unimpressed look. "Since you agreed to a non-help battle. You are prohibited by the rules of this challenge to aid your pokemon in any way outside of commands."
"That is such a load of-"
"Get back to the box, Dave," A tired voice cut in. "I'm fine. Just ready to end this once and for all!" Darwin, leapt above Dave's head, landing in the ring fist-first.
"You're not the only with abilities, jackass," he snarled, cracking his neck. His mane snapped and twisted as if it were alive, blazing with orange and white fires. The heat visibly warped the air and Empoleon took a nervous half-step back before gritting his beak and holding position.
"Final match-up, you and me. You wanted me to give you everything I got? Well take it!" Darwin roared, crossing the distance between them in a single jump. Flames poured from open mouth and the Fire Blast hit full on just seconds before he hit him with his greatest weapon – Focus Blast. The ball of energy detonated on contact, sending Empoleon flying up before he crashed down at Barry's feet, unconscious.
"Psh, told ya you couldn't handle me," Darwin growled, turning. The added heat from blaze died down and as the referee called the match the infernape stumbled, falling face first. "Ow…you know what…think I'm just gonna…take a little nap. Right here…."
Dave and Barry looked at each other, both stepping forward. "Good match?" Dave offered, giving Darwin a concerned glance.
Barry sighed. "Yeah. You…go beat the league, alright? I can't lose to anyone but the best after all." He gave his friend a tired grin, and Dave returned it.
"You know it, man."
