Chapter 1 - Prologue: Before the Beginning

"If you must have a god, do not worship one that exists. Somebody will make friends and be equals with it."

While working at his field, Nago looked up at the daylight sky. He smiled at the memory of the three full moons of good weather this year had brought him, and the prediction that the good weather on the island-country this year was likely to continue for at least another three full moons, even though the days of sunlight were waning.

Suddenly, he noticed a shape in the sky – a giant blue and white birdlike creature, soaring directly overhead, and landing at the far corner of his field. It started plucking out a few stalks of his rice crop.

Nago was about to shoo the bird away, but noticed that as he got closer to it, it was looking him in the eye. He stopped where he was in surprise, and the glare that the bird-creature gave him while munching the rice was a look of seriousness, one usually only found in humans, that told Nago that the bird meant business, whatever the business was. He knew now not to try and harm this bird.

After the bird plucked out a few more stalks of rice, it flew over to Nago and dropped a ball from its mouth into his hand. The ball shone white and contained a strange form of energy. Nago, being a simple farmer, was confused. "What should I do with it?" he asked the bird creature, not expecting an answer.

He quickly got what he didn't expect, as a voice erupted in his head, "Anything."

The bird-creature then flapped its winglike arms twice, and flew away. As Nago watched it leave, he was struck by realization. "That... was Lugia! The legendary bird!" He quickly took the ball in his hand and planted it in his field, knowing that it would bless his land for a long time to come.

As he finished burying the ball, he looked up at the ocean. There was now a strange stone formation in the middle of the ocean that he had never seen before – a stack of rocks in the shape of a mushroom on top of which was Lugia, sleeping.

Nago suddenly rose into the air, became frightened, and looked down at himself - and found quickly that he couldn't, making a 360-degree front flip in the attempt. He looked left, and right, and noticed that his arms were white, flat, and a little furry, and quite long at that. He tried feeling his face, and quickly found that as he brought them to his head, his long, stretchy arms blew him backwards with air resistance. He quickly flapped his arms back, returning himself to an upright position. Then, he felt compelled to fly in the direction he was headed in. As he did so, he felt several flaps of skin open up on his back. What is Lugia doing to me?

As the morning sun rose over Spectrum Town, Tana had a good feeling about herself, waking up from a dreamy slumber. Today's the day, she thought, as she rose from the ground she was sleeping on, and sat up.

"The day for what?" asked Suigun, her Buoysel, from a nearby pond.

"Ahhh!" Tana fell back onto the ground, frightened. "Don't scare me like that, Suigun!"
"I was just asking..." said Suigun, slightly dejected.

"Today's the day Matthew comes back from his Pokémon adventure, and I'm going to propose to him!" said Tana triumphantly.
"Aren't you a bit... young for that?" inquired Suigun.
"Hmph," puffed Tana. "For your information, I'm thirteen and fully capable of supporting myself." At that phrase, Suigun's float ring deflated out of disbelief.

"Tana!" called a voice from her house, about 30 metres away. "Have you been sleeping in the backyard again? Don't you know it's almost winter? You'll die of a cold if you stay out here too long!"
"Alright, I'm coming..." called Tana back to her mother. "Come on, Suigun," said Tana to her Buoysel, "Back in the Pokeball..."
"Aww, I hate it in there... almost as much as a Pikachu," complained Suigun, as he went inside.
"Didn't you stay in there a lot when you were with my dad?" asked Tana.

As Tana entered the back of the house, her sense of confidence only increased. She quickly ran upstairs, showered, changed into clean clothes, and rushed out the front door into the road of Spectrum Town, crying, "Here I cooooooooooooooome...whoahoaoaoa...oof!" She tripped on the top stair, falling all the way down to the ground. She quickly leapt up again, oblivious to her minor scrapes and bruises, and headed toward Matthew's house, where he was taking a vacation from training Pokémon.

"Yoo hooooo!" Tana's voice crawled up to Matthew's house as she ran over and rang the doorbell. "Mrs. Palton? Are you in there?"

"Why yes, Tana," said a kindly old lady at the door as she opened it. She looked about 50 years old, with a slightly hunched back and a slow gait. A brown hood surrounded her thin brown hair. "But Matthew isn't here. He's over at the Pokémon Center, looking for you."

So he does like me, thought Tana. She suddenly stood up straight and saluted Mrs. Palton. "Alright, ma'am, leave Matthew to me!" She dashed off.

As she ran, she let out Suigun. "Think you'll get him this time?" he asked, as he ran alongside her.
"I always do," said Tana. Her confidence was so great it was almost physically visible.
As she got to the Pokémon center, Matthew was in sight. "Matthew! Matthew!" She called out.
"Hey, it's Tana," said Matthew, almost nonchalantly.

"Matthew," she squealed, running up to him with a hyperactive excitement usually only found in angry Mankey. "I'd just like to say that I've had stewing feelings for you for the whole while that you've been gone, you wouldn't know fond three years of absence has made my heart, I'd love to see your Pokémon when we get home, but we need to get home first!!!" All this she said in one breath, and then she started carrying Matthew by one hand off to her house.

When they got back to Tana's house, she was calmed down a bit, if not only from Tana's exhaustion. Matthew was astonished at his childhood friend's sheer giddiness at the thought of actually proposing to a lifelong bond. They sat down at a backyard table and started chatting. Matthew let out his Pokémon and Tana greeted all of them.

During their conversation about Matthew's three-year journey, the topic of their relationship came up, introduced by Tana, of course.
"I'm sorry, Tana, but we're thirteen years old. We have our whole life ahead of us, and I think we should just take it slow. You know?"
Tana felt like an icicle was piercing her heart as Matthew told her this, but the icicle melted right away as she realized that he wasn't rejecting her.
"Oh, it's alright, Matthew," said Tana, jokingly. "I just wanted to say that I love you."
"As if..." said Suigun, right next to them at the side of the backyard table.
"Heh, Suigun has an attitude," said Matthew. "I heard him say 'as if...'."
"I promise I'll come back again for you," said Matthew, returning to the subject. "Who knows, maybe you'll start training Pokémon as well."
"I've got my Suigun," said Tana, rubbing cheeks with her Buoysel. "No matter what, at least we'll always be friends."

* * *

Three years later, Tana was studying chemistry, because she had decided to become a biochemist, studying new ways of creating medicines and analyzing the old ways for clues.

Matthew came back again. This time around, he wasn't at all interested in Tana's relationship. He had collected 24 badges from various regions around Japan, and was intent on showing them to Tana. "I'm well on my way to becoming a Pokémon Master!" he said proudly, while they were in the Pokémon center that they agreed to meet at.

"Yeah, but what about us?" asked Tana timidly.
"Huh?" Matthew was genuinely confused.
"Our relationship!" squawked Tana indignantly, regaining her confidence. "You promised you'd come back again for me!"
"That's right, you did," said Suigun, although all Matthew heard was "Bui-bui, bui bui!"
"Well, I'm here, aren't I? What more d'ya want?" asked Matthew.
Tana left in a huff. "Boys," she muttered to herself. But inside, a part of her was sinking. As she walked away from the Pokémon center, she saw Matthew tending to his Charizard. All Matthew cared about now were his stupid Pokémon. There was no room in his heart for her.

* * *

After another year passed, Matthew made another unexpected visit. His mother was terminally ill, and wanted to see Matthew one last time before she "passed on to the next realm", as he recalled her speech to Tana later. He explained that he felt sorry for what happened a year ago, and was determined to make things right.
Tana, however, didn't want any of it. During that one year, she had made up her mind, so she said, to ignore any thought of bonding with Matthew ever again. Tana's parents had tried to get Tana's head straight, but out of sadness and anger, she had shut Matthew out. Life continued as normal, and Tana even found some new boyfriends, even if they did break away after less than a week of meeting.

Now, though, her poorly set-up defenses were starting to crumble as she began to remember her experiences with him. She also did feel sorry for Matthew's mother. Matthew told her about everything that happened in that year as they stood together under the storm roof of Matthew's house.

"During that year I was away, I thought about what you said. Heck, right when you left and I started feeding my Charizard, I was even thinking about what you said. While I was away in the Sinnoh League, I lost many battles because I was thinking about what you said."
"I didn't say much, though," said Tana, confused.
"Those three words were enough. 'What about us?' I realized that I had been so caught up in trying to train my Pokémon and earn badges that I had forgotten about things that were more important in life."
"That's true," said Suigun with much indignation. "Tana is more important than anybody you'll ever meet."
"I also knew something was wrong when I couldn't hear Suigun speak anymore," said Matthew, realizing something. "It meant, as I found out later, that I had lost my connection with you. If you're truly connected to somebody, you'll be able to hear anybody they're connected to speak more clearly - even Pokémon."

"But that's all over now," said Matthew, also regaining his confidence. "About a month ago, I realized that I still do have room in my heart for you - I just didn't realize that my heart had so much room."
"By the way, I have a surprise for you," twitching slightly at something behind his back.
"Oh, let's cut the crap," said Tana mischieviously, not one to fall into suspense. "Bring it out."
He brought his hands forward. "Oh, it's beautiful!" said Tana.

Matthew was holding a golden locket, that had a diagram of a Pokémon stadium on it. The circle in the middle was different, however - it was split into four quadrants, each coloured a different colour - red, blue, green, and violet.

"I won it after defeating the Elite Four," explained Matthew. "You'd be surprised at the new system they have now. Each region in Japan now has one Elite, making for a total of four. They all live at the Mandarin Plateau."
"But... it's yours! Why would you want me to have it?" asked Tana.
"Isn't it obvious? But that's not all - open it up." said Matthew, as he dusted off the clothes that he was wearing.

Tana looked for a clasp or something that could open the locket, and as her thumb grazed the circle in the middle of the stadium, the four regions glowed and the locket opened up. Inside was what appeared to be a 3-D window peering into the faces of Tana and Matthew.

"It's a new technology called an 'enclosed hologram'," explained Matthew. "People have found a way to project 3-D images onto flat surfaces to make it appear as if the picture is jumping away from you instead of jumping out at you. Basically, it looks like you're peering into a window of a museum exhibit."

I'll treasure it forever, thought Tana, not noticing that Matthew had gotten down on one knee. "Oh, so now you're the one proposing?" said Tana with an expression of playful malice, as soon as she turned to look at him.

"Wy-naut?" said Matthew, as a rimshot played and tomatoes flung out of nowhere, hitting him in the face. They both started laughing about the tomatoes as Tana said, "Yes!"

* * *

There were no wedding bells, but the nineteen-year-old Tana wore "a dress that would take an Entei two bounds to leap over," said her uncle, commenting on its absurd length. As the priest read the couple their vows in Tana's garden of a backyard, the couple found themselves snickering whenever the word "Arceus", "Dialga", "Palkia", "Mew", "Ho-oh", "Lugia", or some legendary Pokemon was substituted in the place of "God", "Jesus", "Christ", "Allah", "Jehovah", "Zeus", or some other name. This type of replacement was so prevalent in the vows that at the end of the priest's reading, the couple was doubled over in laughter. "What in the name of Arceus is so funny?" asked the priest.

"You're not helping," commented Suigun, who was dressed up in a tuxedo and standing next to Tana.
"By the power vested in me by the commander of Dialga and Palkia, I--" he stopped abruptly as he watched the couple, once again convulsing in laughter, showing no signs of stopping.

When they finally recovered, the priest gave up. "You know what, it's obvious that you two love each other, and agree to your vows, otherwise you wouldn't be doing this in the first place. I pronounce you man and wife, now please stop laughing! Giratina!" He sucked in another breath as they started wheezing while everybody sitting in the benches outside watched in amazement. No other couple that they had known – even young couples - had ever done this before.

* * *

"Isn't she cute?" asked Tana in her bed, holding onto her newborn daughter.
"She is, but I can't believe it's so early. We're only 21, you know that," said Matthew.
"Oh, don't be such a pushover," said Tana. "I'm sure we'll make a happy family."
"I'll name her... Rachel. After your mother," said Tana.
"But my mother's name was Ruth..." protested Matthew. Their baby promptly slapped Matthew's finger for making the suggestion.
"Doesn't matter, see? It's stuck with her already," said Tana, laughing.

* * *

Suigun was playing with Rachel in their playroom. Rachel now held what she thought was dominance over Suigun when she was around – they played a game where she ordered him around and he would usually comply in good spirit. Rachel and Suigun made good friends nonetheless; in fact, they took such good care of each other that Rachel even rode on Suigun in the water sometime. As she grew, though, Suigun was no longer strong enough to support her, so she stopped riding on him.

Right now, they were playing a game of who could throw the most beanbag cushions at each other. Rachel was winning, and not because Suigun was going easy on her.

"Say cheese," said Tana to Rachel, as she flashed the camera. "I'm winning!" said Rachel proudly, sitting next to a spiral-eyed Suigun with a wide grin on her face.

* * *

"Rachel's almost five," sighed Tana. It was Tana and Matthew's seventh anniversary, and to celebrate, they had gone on a boat ride together and left Rachel with her seven-year-old friend Shigeru. Tana knew that Shigeru's parents were trustworthy, and that Shigeru's Wartortle would definitely keep Rachel busy for a while, as they tried each other's territories.

Matthew looked up at the sky. "Seven years, huh. It seems like it was just yesterday."
"It always does," said Tana, shoving him playfully. "Next thing you know, it'll be our fourteenth and you'll say it feels like just two days ago."
Matthew shoved back, rocking the boat. "That may be, but I'm still young!"
"If you consider 26 to be young... haha!" A shoving contest erupted, and the boat tilted, dumping them both into the water. They came out, and started laughing. Who said life over 25 was dull?

When they got home, Rachel had completely overpowered Shigeru's Wartortle, but eventually they made good friends.

* * *

*RING* *RING* *RING*

"Mmmh..." said Rachel. "Five more minutes..." she mumbled as she closed her alarm clock, which quickly sprang open again, counting five minutes.

Five minutes later, the alarm clock rang again, and Rachel was up almost immediately, bumping her head on the ceiling. "Hmm..." she wondered. "How'd I get all the way up there, anyway? I'm too short! Oh well."

She checked her calendar, ripping off the previous day's entry. "April 7... oh no, that's the first day of school! I forgot!" She rushed down to her kitchen, where her grandma was waiting for her with breakfast.

"Here you go, schoolgirl-chan," said her grandma kindly. "Eat up, you have a big day ahead of—whoa! You're really wolfing it down, aren't you," she said, surprised at how quickly Rachel was eating.

As soon as she finished her last gulp of orange juice, she slammed the cup down and pressed a button on her watch. "Aha! 1 minute and 49 seconds! Suigun said I couldn't do it, but I did!"
"Whatdya mean I said you couldn't do it? I only made a bet with you!" said a voice from the living room.

Rachel then looked down at what she was wearing, and realized that she was still wearing her pajamas. "Ahh! I need to change! That's why I woke up so early, to decide what I'm going to wear!"
As she came up, she took out all of her clothes and neatly laid them out on the floor. As she was laying out all of her clothes, Tana walked in. "Deciding what to wear, hmm."

Rachel simply stood there, thinking to herself for about three minutes, and finally decided on a pair of camouflage jeans and an orange shirt with yellow sleeves from about 2 inches above the elbow down that had an inflatable collar.

"Hmm," said Tana. "You should lose the inflatable collar, it makes you look too much like a Buoysel."
"In that case, I'll have to change the whole getup," said Rachel. "Dressing a girl is an imperfect art, but an exact science," she said, feigning sophistication.
"Haha, I like the way you think! But make up your mind quickly, there's only another half-hour before you leave."

Again, Rachel thought for three minutes, and put on a navy-blue jacket on top of a purple T-shirt, and a pair of blue jeans. Her shoes were plain white sneakers, which she said looked best simply because they were white.

She brushed her teeth and washed her face, and went to her dad for one final inspection. "You look great, darling," said Matthew, approvingly.

As she walked to school, she met up with Shigeru. "Hey, Shiggy-kun!" she called out.

"Wow," said Shigeru, catching up to her. "You're the first person I've ever met who mixed up an honorific with an endearing nickname."
"I'm sure you'll meet a lot of that kind of person when you grow older," said Rachel. "And why are you bringing your Wartortle?" Rachel pointed to the blue Pokeball that Shigeru was holding.

"Oh, this isn't Warty," said Shigeru, calling his Wartortle by its nickname. "It's a Butterfree. I caught it with a net last week when I was out hunting for butterflies."

"Wait, so you caught it with a net first, and then used a Pokeball?" asked Rachel. "Isn't that... kind of cheating?"
"Nah," said Shigeru, blowing it off. Then, the bell started ringing, so they hurried up.

"Ohayou gozaimasu, class," said the teacher.

"Oha—you!" said most of the class, who were sitting on the floor in front of her. Some of them remained quiet out of nervousness.

"My name is Yamato Takahashi," said the teacher. "I'll be your teacher for the next two years. First, I'd like to get to know your names..."

* * *

After class was let out, Rachel met up with Shigeru again. "So, how was your first day?" he asked.
"Oh, nothing unusual," said Rachel, with the same tone of confidence her mother had. "I got into trouble a few times for fighting with the boys, but they all respect me for it. I know they do," she said with pride. "How was your first day of your last year of school?"
"Oh, nothing unusual," returned Shigeru.

As Rachel stepped in the front door of her house, she sensed that she had forgotten something. It lingered in her mind for a few seconds as she walked into the living room, when all of a sudden, a picture of a Pokémon she didn't recognize popped up in front of her face. "Happy birthday!" said her entire family. So that's what she'd forgotten... she was five years old today!
"Today, we have a very special birthday present for you," said Matthew. "We've been thinking about it for almost a year now, and we decided to give it to you. But being the smart girl you are, would you like to guess what it is?"
"Well, for it to be that special," she said, "it must be something very important to you. Hmm... is it that locket you showed me with your pictures in it?"
Matthew was surprised. "That's an excellent guess," he said, regaining his composure quickly, "but nope, that's not it." He took the present out from behind his back.

"It's... a Pokeball," said Rachel, equally as surprised as Matthew at the steel ball in front of her. "But I'm too young to have one of those, amn't I? I need to be at least ten, right?" she asked, mixing up the word "aren't".
"No, you only need to be ten if you want to train Pokémon and join the league," said Matthew. "Did you know that this Pokeball is almost 35 years old?"

"Aw, so it's not a Taillow or a Beautifly..." she said, pointing out her expectation that it was a new pet for her. "Well then again, maybe it is, but you just kept it in a 35-year-old ball to surprise me. By the way, how does it even open?" she asked, knowing that with the newer Pokeballs, all you needed to do was to throw them and they'd open by themselves.

"You have to twist this cap here," said Matthew, pointing to the reddish caplike nub on the top. Rachel twisted the top, springing the ball open into two parts. Out popped...

"Suigun!" said Rachel. "It's you!"
"It's me, alright," said the Buoysel. "I've been in this family for almost 35 years," he explained. "Your grandpa was my first trainer, but then he handed me down to Tana and then you. But for some reason, Tana liked this old Pokeball. I have to admit, I'm looking forward to going inside a new one, this one is stuffy as hell," he said, nudging the steel ball with his nose.

"That reminds me," said Matthew, "You can also have this." He handed her a Pokeball. This one wasn't like most of them from this generation – the regular balls were red on top and white on the bottom, but this one looked blue on the top and yellow on the bottom. "It's a Pokeball I bought, specially customized to Suigun's specifications. Actually, the lady at the convenience store heard Suigun going 'bui-bui-bui', and asked me about it."

"Well, hurry up and go outside to catch me with it already," said Suigun. "The sooner this gets done, the better for me."

So they ran outside, and Rachel tried throwing the Pokeball at Suigun. But to both their chagrins, it just bounced off harmlessly. She tried two more times, but each time, it simply bounced off. She ran inside and asked Matthew why. "Oh, silly me," he said. "I forgot to release Suigun from his old Pokeball." He ran to his own room and got a contraption that looked like a miniature Death Star, and placed it inside the Pokeball. It went in just like a Pokémon would, and started whirring inside. The ball shook for about thirty seconds, and then stopped. Suddenly, outside, Suigun started glowing blue, and then returned to normal. "Okay, now you should be able to catch him."

When they got outside, Suigun was suddenly more patient. "Okay, now you can catch me, but I have to warn you, I might break free by instinct. I'll try and control it."

"Doesn't matter, I'll pounce on the Pokeball right afterwards and hold it closed myself. Pokeball, go!" said Rachel, as it opened and caught Suigun. True to her word, Rachel pounced on the closed Pokeball as it shook violently. "Howya doing in there, Suigun?"

"Argh, I can't fight this primal instinct... at least not very well, anyway... my body is going off in random spasms as if there's another Buoysel in here, taking up my space..." he said, sounding pained as the ball kept shaking like it was the Armageddon.

Finally, the Pokeball stabilized. "Yay!" said Rachel, striking a pose. "I caught a Buoysel!"

"Catching a Pokémon that was already yours doesn't count, ‘bui..." said Suigun as he came out, suddenly putting his paws to his mouth and gasping. "What's wrong with my speech, ‘bui?"

"Hmm, must be an effect of the new Pokeball," commented Rachel. "Well, I don't mind. I think you're cuter this way."
"What the hell, ‘bui! I can't talk like this forever, ‘bui!" protested Suigun.
"You should consider yourself lucky," said Rachel. "Most Buoysel can only say the 'bui' part."
"Agh. I guess I'll have to live with this stupid accent, ‘bui..."
"Good for you," said Rachel, as she returned Suigun to his new Pokeball.

As the next five years went by for Rachel, she and Suigun bonded even more, and her schoolwork didn't lag at all. In fact, her grades were so good that she did in fact get that Taillow she wanted, as well as the Death Star-like device used for releasing Pokémon, as a good luck charm. Shigeru went on to become a biochemistry student under Tana, studying how Potions worked and helping her developing new, stronger types. He also wanted to be a Pokémon trainer, but decided that that job was too cliché for somebody like him. Overall, things were high and looking up for both of them.

-----------------------------------

Aaaaaand... that's a cut! As you can see, my chapters are terribly long. (This one alone was ten pages in Word. 4,483 words, too.) If you want, I can shorten the chapters a bit as I keep posting them. But if I do that, you can expect to see at least one a day as I struggle to catch this up with the official release...

At last count, there were 24 chapters in total (since I've been working on it for over six months now), so I have quite a lot to spare. If it looks bad now, just wait till you see the next few chapters.

Before asking about my spelling of "Buoysel", it's how I ended up spelling it normally too, not just in this fic. Because "Buizel" sounds too much like it's supposed to be the Japanese transliteration.

You won't see me saying "Fushigidane" or "Lizardon" anytime soon, though. (Although I do use the name "Mizugorou" at one point, it's still a Mudkip.)

If you want to read more before I post it here, head over to my blog. Eventually the whole story will appear here, but I want to graduate the story here too, instead of just posting everything at once like I did at SPPf.

(18/06/2010) I'm going to start posting them in spoiler tags now, because I don't want my posts to stretch out the pages too much.

(14/07/2010) For those of you who think this fic is almost over by the deceptive display message, don't hold your breath. I plan for this baby to have 52 chapters.

(02/10/2010) This fic is starting back up again. In order to finish the story by December, I need to write one chapter every 4 days. Do you think I can do it? ^_^

(29/10/2010) 'Cause I don't. I haven't even finished Chapter 30 yet.

(14/01/2011) It's high time I put a table of contents here. But long TOC is looooooong.

(18/05/2012) Long time between updates is loooooooooooooong. Chapter 35, yay!

(17/09/2013) I decided to revisit this thread to relive some old memories. While there were some gems, the story in general was pretty rough, and pretty badly written. (Now that I look at it again, three years after I started, my own rating scale would give it not even 35 to 40, while I'd given it 60 a long time ago.) So yeah, unfortunately, it's a wrap for Generation 2021 for me. Now, I might try my hand at rewriting it when I have the time, but there's no guarantee of that.

Re: Generation 2021

Yh i was confused by the spelling at first, but the characters are well presented and have good development, keeping the reader engaged.
I thought i had read something wrong when it said the Buoysel was talking, but i see you addressed that later on so its all good!
I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

Re: Generation 2021

Yay, my first reply here ^_^

Thanks for the review, I'll keep your stuff in mind.

Re: Generation 2021

Great start! I love your use of words. You are obviously a strong writer. Can't wait for more!

Second chappie! XD

Well, since nobody's asked to shorten them, here's another long-ass chapter.

Remember, if you want to read more before I post them here, head over to my blog!

-----------------------------------

Chapter 2 - The Beginning

*RING* *RING* *RING*

"Mmmhhh," said a voice from under the covers. "Just five more minutes? Please?" The alarm clock responded, "Okay, but only because you set me to five minutes before six."

Five minutes later, the alarm clock started ringing again, and a messy-haired Rachel came out from under the covers. "Argh, my back is still sore..." she said, still in her pajamas.

As Rachel looked at the calendar, however, she suddenly realized what this day was. "Ahh!" She screamed. "It's April 7! The first day of school!" She quickly got up, washed her face, and brushed her (by now, long and black) hair, preparing to perform her annual ritual of deciding her wardrobe for the rest of the school year.

After five minutes of thinking, Rachel picked out a blue sweater with a yellow T-shirt underneath. After another five minutes, she picked out a pair of white shorts, clipped six inches above the knee, with three pockets on each leg. "Hmm," said Rachel, peering into the mirror at a light brown face with black eyes. "Does this really fit me? Hmm... I know what I'm missing!" She ran to her closet and pulled out a plain green hairband, putting it on her hair. "Nah, I'm not going to put a flower on it," thought Rachel.

By this time, it was already half past six, and she only had another hour before she had to go to school. This was a new record for her, the previous years taking at least an hour to get ready completely.

But when she got down to the kitchen, she didn't see any school supplies in her backpack – instead, there were two boxes of ten miniature spray cans each – one yellow and one blue. Rachel knew what these were – Potions and Super Potions! But why would those be in her backpack? Unless...

"Mom," Tana heard in her bedroom shortly thereafter, "How old am I today again?"
"I thought you'd remember," said Tana, waking up. "Today's your eleventh birthday."
"So I'm not going to school?" asked Rachel.
"Nope," replied Tana, getting out of bed. "In about half an hour, we'll be going to Professor Maple's laboratory."
"That's where you work, right? By the way, where's Suigun?" asked Rachel.
"Oh, he's not here right now," said Tana, getting out of bed. "You'll meet him later, at the lab."

* * *
As Rachel and her parents left in Tana's car a half-hour later, Rachel was burning with excitement. Her first starter Pokémon!

"Well, here we are," said Tana, getting out of the car. Rachel was surprised at the speed of the ride. Or was it just that Professor Maple's house was only a short drive away?

The family stepped up to the door, and rang the bell. "Early you are, young Palton..." said Professor Maple, as he walked up to the door, imitating Yoda. "A Pokémon, you must choose today."

"So, what are my choices?" said Rachel as they walked inside, with the same type of cut-the-crap attitude that her mother had.
"Well, we didn't have any of the standard Pokémon, you see..." said Professor Maple sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. Great, thought Rachel. That rules out twelve of them... "What we do have, though, are some alternative starters you might want to consider."

He took out three Pokeballs from his pocket, and handed one of them to Rachel. "This one is a fire type. Go on, let it out, and see what it is."

Rachel followed Maple's instructions, and out popped a Growlithe. "Hey, nice to meet you," said the Growlithe. "My name's...umm...ahh...hmm..." Growlithe became lost in thought.

"He does that a lot," whispered Maple to Rachel. "Alright, next up is the grass Pokémon." He handed another Pokeball to Rachel, and Rachel let this second Pokémon out. It was a Cacnea. "Honoured to be of your acquaintance, ma'am." the Cacnea was bowing to nobody in particular, as if it were in a king's court. "Oops, wrong one," said Maple. "It's this one," he said. "Go on, let it out." It was a Bellsprout. "Hey, yo, whassup?" it started saying, flailing its leaves like they were a rapster's hands.

"Why's it speaking English?" said Rachel, bemused.
"I dunno," said Maple back. "It has a strange accent on its voi—English?!?"
"Yeah, don't they usually speak Japanese?"
"No, they usually say their own names, or make animal noises," said Maple, obviously surprised. "No matter, here's the third Pokémon, a water type."

The last Pokeball was blue and yellow. "Isn't that Suigun's ball?" I asked Maple, who suddenly turned red as a beet. "Umm... well, it was supposed to be a surprise, but alright, yes, it's a Buoysel."
"Come on, taking a Pokémon that was already mine doesn't count. Don't you have another one?" said Rachel, when Suigun suddenly popped outside the ball. "Mm hmm, so you did learn something from me, ‘bui."
"Hold on," said Professor Maple suddenly, to Matthew, who was standing there watching Rachel. "You never told me Suigun could speak!"
"Did I?" said Matthew, purposefully absent-minded.

"We do have one more Pokémon," said Maple to Rachel, as she took back the yellow-and-blue ball. "However, it is Normal-type, so you won't be able to do much special with it."

Rachel let out the last Pokémon, which was a Sentret. "Hi, are you my new friend?" it said.

"Is it speaking English this time?" asked Professor Maple sardonically.
"Nope," said Rachel. "And this one's perfect. I'll take it!" she said gleefully.

As Rachel and her parents left, Maple let out a sigh. Kids these days... At least he had three more kids coming, and they were all boys. Then he smacked his forehead, realizing something. "Crap, she took two of my Pokémon! Now I only have two to give to three kids!" He started running around his lab, looking for another water-type Pokémon that he could present...

* * *
"Well, this is goodbye for now," said Tana, a tear in her eye. "You've grown up so well, it rips my heart apart watching you leave."

"Be sure not to forget anything I've taught you!" said her teacher.

"I won't, Takahashi-sensei!" called Rachel to her.

"Don't worry," said Rachel to her parents, promisingly, "I'll come back as often as I can." She waved goodbye to them one last time, and started walking towards Route 48...

* * *
As Rachel walked down the road with Suigun, she was humming to herself. "What's that tune, ‘bui?" asked Suigun.
"Oh, it's just a song that I recently learned... you want me to sing it to you?"
"Sure, ‘bui."

She started singing as she walked down. Some music started playing in the background.

Tatoe hi no naka, mizu no naka, kusa no naka, mori no naka...
Tsuchi no naka, kumo no naka, ano ko no SKIRT no naka—kyaaaaaaa!

"What's wrong, ‘bui?" asked Suigun, somewhat worried.

"A Pikachu just ran under my shorts!"

"Perhaps he thought it was a skirt, ‘bui!"

But by this time, the music that had started playing in the background was continuing, so Rachel listened to it to find out where she was in the song, and continued:

Ore wa ko itsu to tabi ni deru...

Then they heard the Pikachu again. "Ignore it," said Suigun.

...eta waza de kachimakuri,
Nakama wo fuyashite tsugi no machi e...

As Rachel started singing this line, a lot of Pokémon in the trees along this route started dancing along to the music.

Itsu mo itsu demo umaku yuku nante
Hoshou wa doko ni mo nai kedo...
Itsu demo itsu mo honki de ikiteru,
Koitsu tachi ga iru!

During the seven-second intermission, Rachel said to Suigun, "now comes my favourite part."

Ah, akogare no
Po-ke-mo-n Ma-su-ta-a ni...
Naritai na, Naranakucha,
Zettai natte yaru!

As the music seemed to be at its conclusion, it started up again. Rachel recognized the change. "Looks like they want a second verse! And I missed the first line! Damn!"

Tsuchi no naka, kumo no naka, ano ko no SKIRT no naka—shitsukoi, sono Pikachuu...

"What, Pikachu got you again, ‘bui?" said Suigun, about to laugh. Rachel shot him a mean look, and continued.

Kanarazu getto daze,
Po-ke-mo-n, ge-t-to da-ze-i-e-i-e-i-e-i-e-i-e-i-e!

By this time, they saw a small town up ahead.

Tatakai tsukarete, oyasumi gunnai...
Mabuta wo tojireba, yomigaeru...
Honoo ga moete, kaze ga mai
Nakigoe todoroku ano batoru ga.

As they walked, they rapidly approached the town.

Kinou no teki wa kyou no tomo tte
Furui kotoba ga aru kedo...

"They're not old, ‘bui!" said Suigun.

Kyou no tomo wa ashita mo tomo dachi
Sou sa Eien ni!

Rachel was taking the song in full stride now, and was walking much faster. She saw all different kinds of Pokémon in the trees, crowding around her now – most of them bugs. Some of them, hyped up by the song, started releasing spores in an effort to beautify the place.

Ah, akogare no
Po-ke-mo-n Ma-su-ta-a ni...
Naritai na, Naranakucha,
Zettai natte yaru!

As the music concluded, Rachel did a few dance moves and finished off with a split. She didn't notice that she was already in the town on the other end of Route 48.

As she finished, a single pair of hands was clapping, and Rachel quickly stood up, embarrassed that somebody had seen her. "No, no, don't be embarrassed," said the boy who was clapping. "You did a great job. Are you a Pokémon trainer?" the boy asked.

"Why yes, I am. My name's Rachel."
"My name's Ken. Nice to meet you. I'm 10 years old today, and I'm getting my first Pokémon! You want to join me?"
"Sure. As a matter of fact, I just got my starter Pokémon today, too."
"You got a Buoysel? Nice!"
"Well, actually, Suigun isn't my starter—"
"Then how'd you get him? Buoysel are supposed to be really strong! A starter couldn't possibly fight one of those."
"Actually, he wasn't mine originally, he was my grandpa's," explained Rachel. "But he handed it down through the generations, and how he's mine! And we're great friends at that," she finished.
"So who is your starter?"
Rachel let it out.
"It's cute," said Ken. "By the way, what were your choices? This morning, I'm going to choose between a Charmander, a Bulbasaur, and a Totodile. For some strange reason, they didn't have a Squirtle."
"Which one do you think you'll get?" asked Rachel.
"I don't know," said Ken. "I'm probably just going to pick the Charmander. I hear they're the most powerful of them all."

"How's about this," said Rachel. "As soon as you get your Charmander, we'll battle my Sentret against your Charmander!"

"Great idea," said Ken. They quickly went to the lab, where another professor was waiting. "Yo, Ookido-sensei!" called Ken.

"Ken! Howya doing?" said Professor Oak.

"Come on, Rachel, he doesn't bite," said Ken, as they walked into the lab. Rachel noted that it didn't look anything like Maple's lab back home – this lab was very disorganized and felt more like a home – perhaps because Maple's lab was quite new. This one looked like it was fifty years old, or even more. It even had a collection of old sketchbooks, which undoubtedly belonged to Professor Oak.

"I've decided on Charmander," said Ken decisively, picking up a Pokeball, and letting the Pokémon out. "Hey, what's the big idea?" said the Totodile that came out, although all Ken heard was "To-to-dile, dile?" with an angry expression on the Totodile's face. "Whoops..." said Ken.

"Oh dear, I've mislabelled the Pokeballs," said Oak. "In that case, the one with a lightning bolt on it should be Charmander's ball."

Ken tried letting the one from there out instead, but that one was a Pikachu, which promptly decided to send Thunderbolts to everybody in the room. "Why do I even bother with Pikachu?" said Oak with a tone of resignation, as he returned Pikachu to its Pokeball. "Well, try this one," he said, bringing out a third Pokeball. As Ken let it out, he saw that it was Rachel's Sentret.

"Well, you're not getting that one," said Rachel, snatching the Pokeball from Ken's hand, and placing another one in it. Ken let this one out, and finally, it was the Charmander that he wanted. Ken thanked Professor Oak, and Oak handed him a Pokedex and six Pokeballs.

"Hmm, let me check in the back of my backpack for a sec..." Rachel looked into her backpack to see if she had those things. She found five Pokeballs, along with the Potions and Super Potions that were there earlier, besides the obvious stuff like clothes. "Hmm, I don't seem to have a Pokedex...oh well, let's go on outside and battle!"

"Did I hear somebody say battle?" came a voice out of nowhere.

"Hey, look, it's my brother, Hikaru!" said Ken, excitedly. "He's a referee for all the Pokémon matches that happen here in Pallet Town."
"So, we've got two starters, hmm," said Hikaru. "What's your name?" he asked Rachel.
"Rachel," said Rachel. "Your brother just got his first Pokémon, but I have three already. I'll only use my Sentret, though."
"Well, since it's your first battle, I'm assuming that you don't know at all what to do," said Hikaru, with a hint of concern.
"I did watch all those battles on TV at home," said Rachel. "Likewise," said Ken.

"You just call out whatever moves you want the Pokémon to use, right?" asked Rachel, which got chuckles from both Suigun and Hikaru. "Where'd your Buoysel learn how to chuckle?" asked Hikaru, interested.

"I'll tell you what to do, ‘bui," Suigun told Rachel.
"I'll tell you what to do, bro," Hikaru told Ken.

Hikaru announced the rules of the match. "It's a one-on-one battle. Each player will have one Pokémon to use. Whoever's Pokémon faints first loses. Let's get started!" He flipped a coin, and it came down heads. "Rachel will choose her Pokémon first."

"Alright, in that case, Sentret! I choose you!" said Rachel, who, after saying the phrase, turned red as a beet. "Argh, I'm not experienced enough to be allowed to say that phrase..."
"Charmander! It's up to you!" said Ken, letting out his Charmander and praying to the skies for the best.

Hikaru pulled out a special red-and-yellow horn that had a timer on it, which would record the time the battle took. "Begin the battle!" HONK! The horn sounded.

"Tell Sentret to start scratching Charmander," commanded Suigun.
"Scratching?!? Doesn't it use some sort of attack with its tail?" asked Rachel.
"Your Sentret doesn't know that move yet," explained Suigun. Rachel understood.

"Sentret, use Scratch!" called out Rachel.
"Scratch attack!" said the Sentret, launching a barrage of scratches on the Charmander, while at the same time, saying "ja-ja-ja-ja-ja-ja-ja".

"Ken, tell Charmander to use Bite!" called Hikaru.

"Okay... Charmander, use Bite!" said Ken with a shaky voice, unsure of himself.
"Char?" was all that Ken heard the Charmander say. "Okay, that was unexpected..." admitted Hikaru. "Try using a clearer voice! Be brave!"

"Charmander, use Bite!" said Ken, a second time.

"Char..." was all that Ken heard, once again. The Charmander started lying down, about to take a nap.
"Okay, tell your Sentret to start scratching Charmander again," said Suigun. "He needs some waking up."

"Time out!" called Hikaru, pressing a button on the horn to stop the clock. "I think your Charmander needs some getting used to," said Hikaru to Ken, pointing to the sleeping Charmander. "It doesn't seem to like you that much."
"How do I get it to start liking me, though?" asked Ken, worried that he made a bad decision of a Pokémon to choose.
"I bet we're both doing something wrong," said Hikaru, then remembering something. "Charmander can't learn bite! I forgot about that. Tell it to start scratching Sentret back!" Hikaru got excited again.

"Charmander, start scratching Sentret back!" said Ken.
Charmander got up, and said something that Rachel heard as, "Now that's what I'm talking about!" Charmander lunged at Sentret, saying, "Scratch attack!"

"Don't fall for it! Tell Sentret to curl up!" said Suigun.
"Sentret!" called Rachel. "Curl up into a ball!"
"Defense curl!" called Sentret, curling up into a ball.

Charmander slowly got up, and started scratching the curled-up Sentret, calling out the same "ja-ja-ja-ja-ja-ja-ja" that Sentret had called out earlier. All Ken heard, though, was "char-char-char". Charmander's scratches didn't have nearly as much an effect as Sentret's, and when Charmander finished, jumping back to his own position, Sentret was barely damaged.

Now, Rachel was about to try something of her own. "Sentret!" she called. "Start rolling onto Charmander!"

"But I don't know how to do that!" came a muffled voice from the ball of fur.

"You could just try..." said Rachel. "Thrust your body up and forward so that it rolls over by itself. Your tail can push off a little too."

The Sentret listened attentively, and tried what Rachel said, as Charmander watched, frozen in awe and surprise that a Pokémon could learn a move like that.

After a few tries, Sentret got the hang of it, and tried doing it faster, calling "Rollout!" in the process. The ball hit Charmander, knocking it out before it had a chance to react.

As Hikaru looked at Ken's Charmander, it looked like it had fainted. "Charmander is unable to battle. The winner is Rachel!" He sounded the horn, but instead of stopping, the timer on the horn started up again. "Oops..." he said, feeling mighty foolish. He was so excited in watching the battle, he forgot to restart the clock on his horn when they continued battling. Oh well, you couldn't record every battle...

"You were great, Charmander," said Ken, returning it to its Pokeball. "Don't worry about losing, I'm not such a good Trainer yet, myself. We'll improve together, how's that." A muffled "char" came from inside the Pokeball.

Meanwhile, Rachel was talking to Suigun. "Yes, I won my first battle!" said Rachel gleefully, after having praised her Sentret and returned it to its Pokeball. "Even if it was against a starter like myself..." Suigun, however, was more interested in the move that Rachel spontaneously taught Sentret. "That's not a move I've ever seen an untrained Sentret do," said the experienced Buoysel, "and trust me, I saw a lot of wild Sentret back in Johto when I was there."

Ken and Hikaru, after collecting their things, were watching Rachel talk to Suigun a short distance away. "Why is Rachel talking to her Pokémon?" asked Ken, in a whisper.
"Oh, it's just something that trainers do. They make friends with their Pokémon, otherwise they wouldn't be able to train them so well," whispered Hikaru back.
"Yeah, but it sounds like they're having an actual conversation. I'm listening to their sentences, and that Buoysel isn't just saying 'yes', 'no', and 'I like food'."
"But how could Rachel get any meaning from those statements? I'm distinctly hearing that Buoysel going 'bui-bui-bui'. The inflating collar doesn't give any hints, that's just a natural reaction."
"Think we should ask her?"
"No!"

Rachel suddenly turned towards them. "Hey, Suigun asked me to ask you if Ken could join me on our journey."

Ken and Hikaru started whispering again. "See? I told you that Buoysel could talk!"
"I'm telling you, Pokémon can't—"

"Oy," said Rachel, nudging Hikaru. "Snap out of it."

"Oh. Um, sure, Ken can join you," said Hikaru. "It's always good to have friends along, right?"
"You bet..." said Suigun.
"Oh, hey," said Rachel, noticing something. "You stopped going ‘bui all the time!"

"You see?" said Ken, forming a powwow as Rachel turned to Suigun again. "She explicitly said that that Buoysel stopped going ‘bui all the time, even when all that Buoysel was saying in the first place was 'bui-bui-bui'. That is no ordinary Buoysel."
"No, that's no ordinary trainer. You know what, I'd like to follow you with Rachel on this journey, just to find out more about that."
"Sure thing."
"But in order to avoid suspicion, you're going to need to put up an act, like you don't want me to come."
"Alright. Break up!" They released the huddle.

"You know what," said Hikaru loudly to Rachel, as if acting on a stage, "I'd like to come on this trip too."
"Aww, bro," said Ken, who discreetly winked at Hikaru, "I don't need a babysitter."
"Don't worry, I won't babysit you," said Hikaru. "By the way," said Hikaru, remembering something. "Do you have any money yet, Ken?"
"Nope, not a penny."
"Well, here's 3 thousand pyen for you," said Hikaru, handing him three P1000 bills. Rachel remembered that she had a wallet too, and brought it out. She had 10 thousand pyen.

"Looks like we're all set," said Rachel, as she zipped her backpack up.

"Before we go," asked Hikaru, "What is that thing you're wearing on your neck?"

"Oh, this?" said Rachel, holding up the Death Star-like device attached to a pendant. "This is my good luck charm. It's a device that can release Pokémon from their Pokeballs."

"Just wondering," said Hikaru, as they headed for Route 49 to Viridian City...

-----------------------------------

The obligatory "starting" chapter. This one was kind of strange.

You can also see that I break the fourth wall in narration a lot (as shown by the sudden appearance of music).

I'm definitely coming back and editing this.

is it weird we picked the same name for the local pokemon expert? lol
another good chapter, with some interesting points made!
Keep it up!

Re: Generation 2021

And here's Chapter 3! If these are too long, just tell me.

-----------------------------------

Chapter 3 - Preparing for trouble? Make it half. Then quadruple it. Yeah. Whatever.

Rachel, Ken, and Hikaru were walking on Route 49, when they decided to go into the tall grass to find some wild Pokémon.

After about three minutes, Rachel found a Pidgey.

"Sentret, use Rollout!" called Rachel. Her Sentret curled up into a ball again, and started rolling towards the Pidgey. It just flew away.

"Hey, get back here!" said Rachel, annoyed, as Sentret unfurled itself. "Oh, don't worry," said Suigun. "They'll do that sometimes."

"Hold on, that reminds me," said Rachel. "I'm your trainer, too! What moves do you know?"

"More than four, that's for sure..." said Suigun, recalling them. "I know Quick Attack, Water Gun, Aqua Jet, Growl, Sonic Boom—"

"Enough, enough!" shouted Rachel. "Okay, I'm going to try something again. Sentret, come over here," she called to her Sentret, as she glanced back towards the Pidgey that was eluding her. It had landed in the grass about ten meters away.

"Hey, Pidgey!" called Rachel. The Pidgey looked over, a look of boredom on its face. "Come on, fly up again! You know you want to!" The Pidgey cocked its head, as if to say, "why?"

Then, Rachel ran toward it. The Pidgey, startled, flew upwards again. "Now, Sentret! Curl up into a ball again!"

"Defense curl!" cried the Sentret, as it curled up into a ball. Rachel then called to Suigun, "Now, pick up my Sentret and use Water Gun to blast Sentret towards the Pidgey!"

"Right on it!" said Suigun, who quickly did so. As the Sentret flew towards Pidgey, it flinched in surprise, which gave enough time for Sentret to tackle it. The Pidgey fell to the ground, apparently having fainted, and Rachel caught it with a Pokeball without effort. The ball didn't even shake.

"Hey, Ken!" called Rachel. "Did you catch anything yet?"

"Yep, I got a Pikachu."

"What? Lucky! All I got was this stupid Pidgey."

"Hey, those things are strong if you train them right! Besides, yours can evolve into a Pidgeotto by itself, and mine can't evolve into anything if I don't give it a thunder stone!"

"I think Raichu are kind of weird-looking anyway," admitted Rachel. "They look like they have earrings."

"What'd you name your Pikachu?" asked Rachel.

"I haven't decided yet. I think I'll name it... Denchu." said Ken.

"Great! And my Pidgey's name is Clyde." replied Rachel.

"Guys, we should continue," said Hikaru. Rachel and Ken both came back onto the path.

* * *
"Man, I didn't realize Route 49 would be so long," said Rachel. "Wish we had some bicycles. Hey, there's something next to the road!"

As they ran up to it, it appeared to be some sort of miniature stone shrine. "Wonder who it's commemorating... it looks really old," noted Ken.

Rachel found an inscription that looked like a name, and strained her eyes to read it. "Re-gi-gi...gi...gi...I give up. It's written in English, and there are too many G's."

"You trainers need some help?" said a voice from behind them.

Turning around, the trio saw a boy. He was the same height as Hikaru but had a slightly thicker build, and had black, downward-pointing hair dyed white at the tips. He wore a yellow vest on top of a long-sleeved zebra-striped shirt, and two yellow wristbands on top of the sleeves of the shirt. He wore green shoes and blue jeans.

"The name's Reggie. What's yours?"

"I'm Rachel."

"Ken."

"Hikaru." Hikaru and Reggie walked up and shook hands.

"So, like I said, you guys need any help?"

"Ah, not really, we're just on our way to Viridian City."

"Say, would you like to battle? I've been looking for people to train with to raise my skills up to the 'awesome' level."

"Bring it on," said Hikaru, bringing out his horn.

"Here, take this," said Hikaru, giving Rachel the horn. "All you need to do is to sound the horn at the start of the battle and at the end. To do that, press the button on the handle here."

"Got it," said Rachel.

"The battle will be one-on-one," said Rachel, declaring the rules. "Each side will use one Pokémon, and the first to faint loses."

"Ready?" asked Hikaru.

"You're on," said Reggie.

"Go! Empoleon!" called Hikaru, calling out his Pokémon.

"Go! Ice!" called Reggie, bringing out a Glaceon. But it didn't come out of a Pokeball. Rachel looked around, wondering where it came from.

"Start the battle!" said Rachel, sounding the horn.

"Ice, start by biting that Empoleon with your icy fangs!" called Reggie.

Rachel heard the Glaceon say "Ice fang!" as it bit into Empoleon's neck, being too fast for Empoleon to dodge. Ooh, she thought, That's got to hurt.

"Empoleon!" cried Hikaru. "Are you alright?"

"Yep," Rachel heard the Empoleon say, "I'm alright, it's just a scratch. You taught me to defend pretty well." But all Hikaru heard was "Empoleon" repeated about 3 times.

"Now, Empoleon, use Double Team!"

Empoleon suddenly split into seven images, surrounding Ice.

"Don't be fooled, Ice!" called Reggie. "Use Blizzard on all of them at once!" The Glaceon shot a Blizzard to the sky, making it hit all seven images. But none of them were the real one!

"You think I'd fall for that?" said Hikaru. "Empoleon, use Hydro Pump!" The Empoleon, now back to one, shot a giant stream of water at the Glaceon, hitting it square in the face and making it tumble over, hurt.

"Now finish it off! Hyper Beam!"

The Glaceon could barely move, and this beam knocked it out completely. Rachel sounded the horn again. "Ice the Glaceon is unable to battle. The winner is Empoleon!"
"How'd I do for time?" asked Hikaru.
"Why do you care so much..." wondered Rachel, as she showed him the timer that read 3 minutes, 42.97 seconds.
"I care because I like to train myself to finish battles quickly."

"Meh, that battle wasn't so important," said Reggie. "Who wants to try me on next?"

"I will!" said Ken eagerly.

"Alright then," said Reggie. "Go, Rock!" A Golem came out.

"Go, Charmander!" said Ken.

"Same rules as last time!" said Hikaru. "The first Pokémon to faint will lose." He sounded the horn.

"Charmander, tackle Rock!"

"Hyahh!" Rachel heard the Charmander say, as it tackled the Golem head on, causing it to roll over and hit Reggie in the knee. "Now, Charmander, hit it with your tail!"

"Don't fall for it! Move over, Rock!" The Golem moved over, and the Charmander's attack missed, sending it flying forward and falling hard into the ground. "Rock, pound it!"

The Golem jumped into the air and forced itself downard toward Charmander, who was just about to get up. But it got crushed and fainted.

Hikaru sounded the horn after looking at Charmander once. "Charmander is unable to battle. The winner is Rock!"

"Yeah!" Reggie high-fived his Golem.

"Don't worry, Charmander, we'll get 'em next time..." said Ken, who was still disappointed that the battle was over in less than a minute.

"Next up... Rachel!" said Reggie. "I'll use my last Pokémon on you. Go, Steel!"

A Scizor came out, and both Reggie and Rachel could hear it say, "I'll defeat you this time." Rachel sent out Suigun, who said, "You wish."

"So, are you ready?" said Hikaru through the megaphone. "Same rules as last time, folks!" The horn sounded.

"Suigun, use Water Gun!" called Rachel. Suigun shot out the water, but then... "Steel, slice through it and cut that Buoysel!" The Scizor flew through the Water Gun and cut Suigun, just as Suigun did a low kick on it. Both attacks hit.

The battle kept going on as an even match, with Rachel concentrating on and following Suigun's movements quite a lot, trying to follow her dad's advice to "become one with your Pokémon when you're battling with it". Suddenly, Rachel felt a moment of disembodiment, and then felt like she was being transferred into Suigun's body. She ran as if she were Suigun herself and fired attacks with him.

She heard Reggie call out, "Steel, grab that Buoysel with your claws!" She knew instinctively what to do, but barely dodged it. Steel's claw clipped a small bit of Suigun's side. Suddenly, due to the pain, she was "re-embodied". "Whoa," she said, her head slightly woozy. "What was that...?" Both she and Suigun felt it, which gave Steel another chance to claw Suigun. It hit, but Suigun recovered from it.

Rachel then told Suigun to tackle the Scizor with one final Aqua Jet that hit it critically, knocking it down. She heard Hikaru honk the horn, and announce, "Steel is unable to battle. The winner is Suigun!"

"Great battle," said Reggie, returning his Scizor to nowhere in particular. "But I would have won if it weren't for your Buoysel's high defense."

"Psh," said Rachel, dismissing Reggie's arrogance. As she walked away, she suddenly sucked in air. "Ow!"

"What happened?" said Hikaru and Reggie at the same time, running up to her.

"Some part of my waist got cut," said Rachel, holding a hand to the part of her side that was starting to bleed. She slowly started feeling dizzy.

"But how? You weren't involved in the battle—wait a sec..." said Reggie. "Steel clipped your Buoysel on its body during the battle! You must have been hurt the same way!"

"Doesn't matter now," said Hikaru. "We need to get Rachel to a hospital, and fast! Viridian City is only a few miles up ahead. We'd better hurry."

"I could help," said Reggie. "Pidgeot!" he shouted, bringing out a Pidgeot from seemingly nowhere. "Fly Rachel over to the hospital in Viridian City. Quickly!"

The Pidgeot squawked in affirmation and flew away, careful to maintain balance so that Rachel wouldn't fall off its back. By now, Rachel was unconscious, lying on the Pidgeot's back, and dripping blood onto its back feathers. The Pidgeot sighed in its mind. It would have quite a preening job when it got home...

"We'd better hurry on too," said Ken to Hikaru. "Rachel needs us! Bye, Reggie!" they said, as they waved goodbye to Reggie.

As they ran towards Viridian City, they noticed that there were two bikes lying around on the road, with a note on them, saying:

We don't need these bikes anymore. If anyone wants them, they can take them.

"You sure about this?" asked Ken, as they walked toward the bikes.

"We've got to get to Viridian City fast. And besides, the sun's almost down." said Hikaru, as they mounted the bikes.

As soon as they did so, however, the bikes were pulled from underneath them as if with some invisible strings, making them fall to the ground. Then, a cage fell over them. They heard voices. "Bobby, you're supposed to take the bikes out of the cage zone! Remember?"

"It's Butch, dammit!"

"Whatever, Barney. Now those bikes are useless."

Meanwhile, Ken and Hikaru were having their own little huddle. "Those voices... they're probably from the ones who set the trap."

"Should we let our Pokémon out?"

"Most likely."

Ken and Hikaru then kicked down the cage (which was open at the bottom) and called to the two mysterious mischief-makers. "Whoever you are, that wasn't a very nice trick!"

The voices again. "Shoot, we've been discovered! What should we do?"
"Time to blow our cover."

Two people with white uniforms with a red R on them popped out from the bushes.

"Since you fell for our trap, prepare for trouble."

"And don't try to beat us, you'll only make it double."

"To devoid the world of devastation."

"To control all peoples within this nation."

"To denounce the evils of truth and love."

"To send our message from the stars above!"

"Cassidy!"

"Butch."

"Team Rocket, circling the world all day and night!"

"Surrender now or you're in for a fight."

There was an awkward silence.

"Hey, isn't a Pokémon supposed to pop out and say, 'that's right'?" asked Hikaru, who had seen Team Rocket's antics before.

"Ehrmm... if we had a Pokémon that could talk, we would have done that," explained Butch.

"Hey, I know you," said Ken, pointing at Butch. "You're Uncle Baxter!"

"It's Butch, for the last time! And yes, you do look like someone I know, though definitely not my nephew. You're Ken, right?"

"Argh, Botch!" said Cassidy, annoyed. "Let's stop with the family reunion and start with the getaway! Go, Koffing! Ward them off!" Cassidy sent out a Koffing.

"Go, Empoleon!" said Hikaru, sending out his Empoleon. "Use Hydro Pump on all of them!"

"Em..." Empoleon was charging up, and then let it out. "...poleon!" It hit Koffing squarely in the face, knocking it backwards to hit Cassidy and Butch, who themselves fell backwards. "Oh, you've got me angry now," said Cassidy. "Koffing, use smoke screen!"

"As if I'd fall for that! Use Gust!"

The Empoleon started flapping its wings, if somewhat awkwardly, creating a small tornado that blew the two perpetrators away. "Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off again!" As they faded, they called this out.

Ken and Hikaru nodded at each other as a gesture of their victory, and noticed that the bikes were still there. "Oh no, we forgot about Rachel! Quick, we'd better hurry to Viridian City." They mounted the bikes and pedalled off.

"Hey guys! Wait for me!" called out Suigun.

* * *
Rachel was inside Suigun's body again. But why? I'm not battling with him. She was running toward Viridian City, and apparently, Ken and Hikaru had left her behind. Suddenly, she turned around, and inside the bushes, another Pokémon was coming out. It was a Pikachu. But there was something weird about this one. It kept monologuing while holding up an electric glowstick with several mosquitoes hovering around it. "I've always wondered why a mosquito will hover around a light. So beautiful, and yet so dangerous..."

Rachel wondered, was this Pokémon crazy?

Then, the Pikachu turned at her, and continued its monologue. "It's almost as if it wants to... die." At that last word, its face suddenly turned into that of a beast, and what was originally a Pikachu now pounced on her and swallowed her whole, into the darkness. She woke up with a start.

"Rachel! You're okay!" said a voice that she barely recognized as she opened her eyes and saw a blinding light. She closed her eyes and slowly opened them again, as a face swam into focus. It was Ken.

"That Pidgeot was fast," said Nurse Joy, who came in the door to check on her. "If you had been left out even a minute longer," she explained, "You might've..." She stopped there, not wanting to sink the message in any further. "Well, at least you're alright. But you shouldn't battle for the next week. That wound still needs to heal."

"Rachel!" said Hikaru. "We'll go and battle the Viridian City Gym Leader first, but we promise to tell you all about it."

"Alright," said Rachel weakly, falling back into a troubled sleep.

* * *
The next morning, Ken and Hikaru were standing outside the front door of the Viridian Gym, on extremely softly padded mats leading to the stairs.

"So," said Hikaru to Ken. "Your first gym battle. How do you feel?"

"Not ready," said Ken. "All I have is a Charmander and a Pikachu. And I have a bad feeling about the soft padding that we're standing on right now."

"Well, the gym leader at Viridian City isn't as tough as the rest of them. He's the first one you meet."

"Here goes nothing..." said Ken, as he walked up the stairs and opened the door to the Viridian Gym.

-----------------------------------

In retrospect, I don't even know why I bothered putting Cassidy and Butch in the story. But that's the way it is now, so I might as well live with it until I have time to go back and edit.

Not my cup of tea, but so far good job in general. Keep it up!

Re: Generation 2021

Since nobody asked, here's the fourth chapter. It's going to be a looooooong series.

-----------------------------------

Chapter 4 - Viridian City

When they got in, however, the trainer who met them at the door was a girl. "Hiya," said the Gym Leader. "I'm—"
The girl suddenly started growling, going into a beastlike pose and baring her teeth. "Groudon, the legendary Pokémon who was ruler of the underground!"

When she saw that Ken and Hikaru were both unfazed, she stood up straight again and introduced herself properly. "Bella, the Viridian City Gym Leader. Most starting trainers get scared out of their wits and run out screaming when they see that."

"Isn't it Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, though?" asked Hikaru, who had battled Giovanni himself in Viridian City, just three years ago.
"Ah, pshaw, he got thrown in jail a long time ago."
"Well, that's good to hear," said Hikaru. "I'm assuming there's another trainer here to practise with?"

"Actually, there isn't, which is surprising," said Bella. "This is the most popular Gym since it's the first one that most trainers meet coming in from Spectrum Town or Pallet Town. And of course, most of them are headstrong..." she said, glancing at Ken while saying that.

"What are you saying? That I'm headstrong?!?"

"Well, considering that you came here with a Charmander and a Pikachu, I'd say my guess is as good as yours."

"Let's just start the battle..." said Ken. "I'm nervous enough as it is."

* * *
As Rachel was lying in the hospital bed, she looked out the window. I wonder how Ken and Hikaru are doing right now.

Suddenly, she saw a strange bird-like creature fly past the window. Moments later, Rachel blinked, and a boy was sitting on the window sill. "Yo," he said, raising up two fingers.
"Who are you...?" asked Rachel, still weak from her injury.
"The name's Phoenix," said the boy. Rachel looked a little closer at him, and suddenly found that her vision improved dramatically. He was wearing a red shirt with a white stripe at the elbows that separated the red from the green that was on the sleeves. He was also wearing white pants that were yellow at the legs, and had light brown eyes, as well as a very fair complexion. He was the same build as Hikaru, only skinnier and perhaps a bit taller.
"Why are you here?" said Rachel, suddenly feeling a lot better.
"Well, first of all, I have to tell you a prophecy..."

* * *
"Argh," said Ken, whose battle with Bella wasn't working out very well. "Denchu, use Thundershock again!"

"Diglett, dig into the ground!" called Bella. The Diglett burrowed into the ground, sending dirt flying all over and onto both Ken and Denchu. Once again, Ken couldn't see where the Diglett was. A few seconds later, the Diglett slammed out of the ground and hit Denchu outside onto the soft padding at the bottom of the stairs, spiral-eyed. A few seconds later, the Diglett also slammed into Ken's feet, sending him flying out the door as well.

Ken then landed on the soft padding, next to Denchu. "So that's why they have that there..."

"Come back when you have a little more experience!" shouted Bella. She turned around and said to herself, "Damn, I missed the center of the padding. I really need to work on my Diglett's aim..."

"So, our little headstrong trainer lost his first match... after the Gym Leader used only one Pokémon," said Hikaru, who was already waiting at the bottom of the stairs.
"You could be a little more supportive!" yelled Ken, who promptly jumped up.
Hikaru shrugged. "It's not my fault you used two types that are both weak to Ground-type Pokémon..." He pulled out a small case from his pocket that contained all his badges. He opened it up and showed Ken his Earth Badge. "Get yourself a water-type Pokémon. I used a Blastoise myself."
"But isn't this the first gym? Why'd you use a Blastoise?"
"Well, actually, when I was a Trainer who was still earning his badges, this was the last gym I came across. And remember, this is Giovanni we're talking about. He doesn't screw around."

"Okay then..." said Ken, realizing how hard this journey would be.

"You know what," said Hikaru. "Let's cheer you up a bit. We'll go around and explore the city."

* * *
"So let me get this straight," said Rachel, who was now up, off the bed, and standing up in a hospital gown, her hair messy. "I'm a descendant of a Lugia?"
"Mm hmm," said Phoenix, nodding.
"You know, you still haven't managed to convince me that your story about me and my few friends saving the world from an unspeakable power is true. I mean, it's not like it's the plot for almost every single action movie I've ever watched," said Rachel sarcastically.
"Oh, don't worry, you'll find it out for yourself eventually." Rachel suddenly found herself wearing her regular clothes, and her hair was tidy again. "In the meantime, how about we get out of this place? There's so much alcohol in the air, it's making me drunk just breathing it."

* * *
Ken and Hikaru started exploring Viridian City. They found a ramen bar and settled down for lunch before going anywhere else.
"So, Ken," said Hikaru, slupring down noodles. "Where do you think you're going to go to get a water-type Pokémon?"
"In a lake? River? Pond?" said Ken. "Anywhere's fine, really."
"You know, I've been to Viridian City a lot these past few years, and a lot of the trainers who lose to the Gym leader come out crying. How are you so stoic, knowing that you were humiliated by a girl?"
"Don't push it," said Ken, irritated.
"Alright, I'll back off." Hikaru finished the last of his noodles, and gave the plate back to the shopkeeper. "That'll be 240 pyen, please," said the shopkeeper.
Hikaru handed him a P500 bill and four P20 coins. "I'm paying for Ken, too."
"Oh no, you're not," said Ken, who handed the shopkeeper his own 240 pyen. "I can take care of myself."
"Well, in that case," said the shopkeeper, chuckling, "You can have this," handing the money that Ken just paid him to Hikaru, "and you can have this," handing Ken a 100-pyen coin as change. Ken studied it intently, having never seen something like it before. He'd seen bills of that denomination, but never coins. It had the picture of a Moltres embossed onto it, and on the obverse side, there was a picture of Lugia, underneath which there was a pyen symbol and the number "100" emblazoned onto the coin.

As Ken studied the picture of Lugia, he suddenly saw the Lugia flutter its wings and look at him straight in the eye. He dropped the coin in shock and fell to the ground, bumping his bum on the floor.

"Ken, are you alright?" asked Hikaru, who rushed up to him.

"Yeah, but that coin isn't," said Ken, rubbing his backside. "Here, you can have it. I owe you it anyway." Ken handed the coin to Hikaru, who also looked at it.

"Hmm, this one has a Moltres on it. I've only ever seen Zapdos and Articuno on 100-pyen coins before."

"Anyway," said Hikaru. "We need to catch you a water-type Pokémon, Ken."
"And I know just where to get them!" said the shopkeeper, coming out of his store. "Follow me!"

* * *
When the shopkeeper stopped walking, they were just off Route 50, in more woods. The shopkeeper was excited. "Right up ahead is a secret pond that I've gone to for over 30 years. I've never told anybody about it yet, except for my wife and you two."

Hikaru spotted an oddity. "But haven't new trainers come to Viridian City all the time, looking for water Pokémon?"
"Not to my ramen house. You're the first of that kind of customer."
"After thirty years? That seems odd."

Ken saw something move in the water. "Hey, it's a Magikarp! I want one of those!"
"Why?" asked the shopkeeper. "They can't really do much. All they do is tackle their opponents. Besides that, they can splash water at them, but there's no water to splash inside the Gym."
"Yeah, but at least Ground types are weak against them."
"No they aren't."
"Not to mention, they can evolve into Gyarados later on."
The shopkeeper shrugged. "Your Pokémon, your choice."

Ken ran up to the pond, and randomly threw a Pokeball. The shopkeeper instinctively got up and said, "No! You can't catch a Magikarp like that! You don't know what you'll catch!"

The ball caught something, which turned it into light, and absorbed it into the Pokeball. The ball shook a few times, but luckily, it stopped shaking after a while. Ken walked up to the Pokeball, grabbed it, and threw it out, revealing a Tentacool. "Nah," he said, throwing it back. "Hold it right there, mister," said the shopkeeper. "You've got to catch one with a rod first!" He handed Ken a fishing rod that was conveniently nearby. "Keep it," said the shopkeeper. "It's collapsible, so it'll fit into your backpack."

Ken dipped the rod into the water. Suddenly, it started shaking. "Ooh, it's a big one!" said Ken, yanking the rod out. Out came... a Magikarp! Ken caught it with the same Pokeball that he used to catch the Tentacool, consequently releasing the Tentacool.

"For the time being, though," said the shopkeeper, again. "You'll want one that can actually use water-type attacks."

Ken threw a random Pokeball into the water again, but this time, the Pokémon broke free, and it was a Poliwag. The Poliwag became angry, and shot bubbles at Ken. "Argh, my eyes!" said Ken, whose eyes were stung by the bubbles. "Denchu, use Thundershock!"

Denchu nodded, and started. "Pi...ka..."

"Stop!" said the shopkeeper. "You'll hurt all the Pokémon in the pond, too!" Denchu stopped the shock, his fur starting to frill up from all the built-up electricity.

"Alright, then," said Ken. "In that case, use Quick Attack!"

Denchu went up, ran very fast, and tackled the Poliwag out of the water. But then came another problem. "Pika—blublub! Pi—blublublub!"

"Oh no, he's drowning!" said Ken. "I've got to save him!" He dived in and swam furiously. But as he was about to approach Denchu, he suddenly felt something pulling him on the leg, down into the water. Ken struggled upwards, but to no avail. He called out "Denchu!" but all that came out were bubbles. Well, there's the end to my adventure... and such a random one, too, he thought, as the water rushed into his lungs and he felt a pain in his sides that gradually subsided.

* * *
"...ake...up!" said a voice. Wake up!

But I'm awake, thought Ken. Albeit in a really dark place...

"...amn...it...ke...wak...p!...m...ot...onna...lo...ou!" Damn it, Ken, wake up! I'm not going to lose you!

There's nothing here, thought Ken, who couldn't speak, for some reason. Where am I, anyway? Ken suddenly remembered everything that had happened a few minutes before. I thought I was supposed to be dead. I drowned in the water. And I didn't get to save Denchu.

Then, he felt like his chest was contracting, as his eyes slowly opened. He coughed up water, and stared up blindly. None of the light he saw was at all focussed – everything was white - but he heard the voice again. "...ur...ive!...i...ll...oin...to...be...kay..." You're alive! It's all going to be okay...

I know that voice! thought Ken. He suddenly noticed that he wasn't breathing. He tried to inhale, but none of his muscles seemed to work. No... I'm going to die again.

He felt something hard slap his cheek, and woke up from the pain. "Ow!" he said, suddenly sitting bolt upright and rubbling his right cheek. "Why'd you do that?"

"I had to wake you up, didn't I?" said the voice, which Ken recognized as Hikaru's. However, everything was still blurry. He tried staring directly ahead, and found that he was looking into the face of the old shopkeeper.

The shopkeeper smiled as he saw that Ken was awake. "It was your Poliwag that woke you up. It knows Wake-up Slap, which is pretty uncommon for Poliwag around these parts."
"Where's Denchu?" asked Ken. "I couldn't save him..." he started to cry, thinking that Denchu was also dead.
"Pi-kaaaaaa!" cried his Pikachu. You think I'd drown that easily? he thought. Ken immediately stopped crying, but started again as he cried, "You're okay!"
He stopped crying again as he sensed something strange. "Wait, my Poliwag? But I didn't catch it!"
"Actually, I did," said the shopkeeper. "But it likes you, or so it seems to show." The Poliwag wagged its tail, putting on a sadistic smile that made it seem eager to slap Ken in the face again. "Here," he said, handing Ken a Pokeball. "My courtesy."
"Thanks," said Ken, taking the Poliwag's Pokeball. "I think I'll name you... Polly?"

The Poliwag slapped Ken on the left cheek with its tail. "Ow! Okay, so you don't like that name. Too cliché? How about Bobbler?"
Another slap. "Riley? Wagger? Gakkyo?" Slap, slap, slap. "You know," said Ken, "You're eventually going to run out of PP for that move."

Then, frustrated, the Poliwag started saying seemingly random "Poli"s and "wag"s until Hikaru recognized it as Morse Code. "Could you start over?" said Hikaru, taking out a pencil and notepad.

The Poliwag took a deep breath, presumably to calm itself down, and started again.

"Poli, wag, poli, poli!" There was a pause. "Wag, wag!" Another pause. "Wag, poli, poli, wag, poli!" Pause. "Poli, wag, wag, poli!" Pause. "Wag, poli, poli, wag, poli!"
"Hold up," said Hikaru. "You've been giving me rubbish. What I have now is 'YIÀXÀ'. That's not even a name..." The Poliwag, now truly frustrated, puffed its cheeks up like an angry Jigglypuff and slapped Hikaru five times in the face. "Obviously, we're doing something wrong," said Hikaru, rubbing his reddened, swollen cheeks.

"I know," said the shopkeeper. "You're using the wrong code! You're using the English alphabetic code, and this Poliwag is saying things in a Japanese kana code!"
"Wait, how would you know something like this?" asked Ken. "You work at a ramen bar!"
"Before that, I spent 4 years in the military as a radio operator," the shopkeeper explained. "She wants you to name her Gamer!"
At that word, the Poliwag yipped happily, attempting a jump with its tail and falling on its belly. Suddenly, its eyes became like the spiral on its belly. Ken and Hikaru fell down giggling. "It must be tired, after all those slaps in the face," said Ken. "Return, Gamer. You need some rest."

"And you guys'll need some rest too, if you don't stop laughing," said the shopkeeper. "Come on, let's go somewhere away from here."

By the time Suigun made it to Viridian City, it was night time. He growled. "Stupid Ken and Hikaru. They knew I was here and they didn't even take me along. Now I have to carry Rachel's Pokeball belt as well." He was holding Rachel's belt in his mouth, carrying it along with its Pokeballs and her Gen.3 PokeGear while running toward the Pokémon Center.

When he reached the Center, he rushed through the doors and hopped onto the front desk, surprising Nurse Joy. "Where's Rachel?" he asked, but all Joy heard was "Bui bui-bui?"

"I'm sorry, what are you asking?" said the nurse.

"Rachel! Where is she? She's my trainer and here's her card," said Suigun, pulling Rachel's card out of her belt pocket. Nurse Joy looked at the photo ID on it, and said, "Oh, you knew Rachel was here? She's this way," said the nurse, leaving her seat and beckoning the Buoysel to follow her.

When they got to Rachel's room, Nurse Joy opened the door and Suigun rushed up to the bed and jumped on it—only to find that it was an empty bed with only the covers. "Where's Rachel? I thought you said she was here!" he shouted, but all Joy heard was a series of angry "bui"s.

"I'm sorry," said the nurse, apparently reading his mind. "She was here, but somebody must have taken her away!" As she said those words, the expression on her face changed as she realized she had a job on her hands.

The two rushed back to the front desk and called up Officer Jenny, who was in the area. "So you're saying a girl is missing, and she's still recovering from an injury? It looks like a kidnapping to me, but I wonder who would want to do such a thing...? Not Team Rocket, their hands are full with their own business. In the meantime, I'll put up some bills looking for her."

Jenny set out with Suigun in the side car, and they started posting up bills with Rachel's face on them, and the words "MISSING CHILD" on them. When they were out posting the sixth poster, Suigun saw Ken and Hikaru walking around, and ran up to them. "Hey, it's Suigun!" said Ken happily, whose expression then turned pale with horror. "Oh no, it's Suigun!"

"So that Buoysel's name is Suigun?" asked Officer Jenny, amused and bemused.

Suigun started jumping up to their faces and scratching them. "Lousy kids, you thought you could ditch me, didn't you? You could have at least let me follow you guys, but no, you had to leave me lying there, running off without me! It's a good thing Rachel's grandpa taught me how to spray Potions, otherwise I might be dead right now! And now Rachel's lost, so you have another problem on your hands!" But nobody heard anything that Suigun said. All they heard was a very long series of angry "bui"s.

"By the way, kimitachi, there's a girl missing named Rachel. Do you know anything about her?"

Both Ken and Hikaru did a double take after hearing that. "Rachel's missing?!?"

"Oh, so you give her a reaction," said Suigun, annoyed. Nobody heard him, though. He jumped onto Hikaru's neck, and curled up there. "I'm not letting you ditch me again, you treacherous swine," he said, and for the moment being, tightened his grip around Hikaru's neck, stopping Hikaru from pulling him off as they went to search for Rachel.

* * *
Rachel, however, was having the time of her life walking down Viridian City's road with Phoenix. "...and so, my friend Shigeru gets really mad when his Wartortle plays with him like that." Phoenix was listening quietly, not wanting to break the moment just yet. Maybe he'd get used to life as a human.

-----------------------------------

You know what I've noticed? I've been inconsistently capitalizing and hyphenating "water-type", "Ground type", and "Ground-type".

I italicize all Japanese words that are not used as proper nouns or honorifics. You'll find that I use a few of these words (quite sparingly but they're present nonetheless).

These characters are actually speaking Japanese, but they are contextually translated into English. To explain exactly how this is supposed to work (or not work), might I suggest this comic.

I think there was some trouble with spacing when you copied and pasted from word...other than that tho, this is a joy to read. Great characterization and plot, I love Denchu!

Oh no, the spacing is supposed to be like that. It's just that the lines are a bit too close together, so it looks like a block of text.

(And you read through all this in 3 minutes? I bow down to you.)

Re: Generation 2021

Haha I actually posted before I finished, but yeah...I love it! The missing child cliffhanger is epic! I can't wait until the next chapter.

Re: Generation 2021

Unfortunately, it's going to stay a cliffhanger until chapter 17. ^_^

I wait at least 24 hours before posting a new chapter, so you might need to wait awhile.

Re: Generation 2021

24 hours is nothing! haha i can wait that long... I think. Sometimes I go like two weeks between updates so 24 hours is great!

Re: Generation 2021

Of course, once this post is caught up with the official release, the updates will be a week between... it's just because I have such a huge backlog. If you want to read any more, head over to my blog. The link should be in the first two chapters.

Re: Generation 2021

I like this fic a lot!

I get confused though: Does this take place in the real world or the Pokemon world? Real stuff and Pokemon stuff seem to coexist here.

Oh, that's because they do coexist. The fic is set in a Pokemon world that is geographically identical to the real world. The four regions are in Japan.

Come on, no places where I can improve? There's got to be something that I'm doing wrong.

Re: Generation 2021

And here's chapter 5! This one is where the story really starts getting into the interesting parts.

-----------------------------------

Chapter 5 - Into the Forest

As Rachel and Phoenix kept walking down Route 50 away from Viridian City, they suddenly veered onto the topic of Ken and Hikaru. "They're a pair of brothers that I'd just met a few days ago," said Rachel. "And they're probably at the Gym in Viridian City right now, battling whoever the Gym Leader is."

"Hey," said Phoenix, pointing to an area in the woods that was glowing. "What do you think's going on in there?"

"No idea," said Rachel, turning to look, when suddenly, she felt two fingers poking her in the back, causing her to fall forward into the ground.

"Are you okay?" asked Phoenix, who had only meant to tease her a little. "No problem," said Rachel, standing up. "I've been through worse."

Worse than what I've been through? thought Phoenix, who then dismissed the thought. He wanted to focus on this girl's conversation with him. They both started laughing, as they ventured into the forest towards whatever was glowing.

Ken and Hikaru were starting to lose hope. It was nearing midnight. They'd searched everywhere around the city, but still no sign of Rachel. Suigun had already fallen asleep around Hikaru's neck, but Hikaru never bothered to take him off, because that would just wake him up and make him curl up on Hikaru's neck again. Besides, thought Hikaru, he's snuggling.

Then, as they started walking around the entrance to Route 50, they heard voices. As they followed these voices, they noticed that one of them belonged to Rachel. But Rachel didn't seem to be in distress – rather, she sounded like she was having fun.

As they ran towards the source of the sound, they noticed what Rachel and Phoenix had noticed an hour earlier – a place in the forest that was glowing. As they ran towards it, they bumped into a few trees, but eventually they made it. "Hey, look, there they are now!" said Rachel, holding a stranger's hand.

They were in a clearing, where the fireflies were making a pond glow yellow. Hikaru recognized it as the same pond that the shopkeeper had shown them earlier that day.

"Hey, Ken! Hikaru! There you guys are," said Rachel, running up to them. "Meet Phoenix."

"Hey," said Hikaru.
"Hey," said Phoenix, right back. They were both sizing each other up while Rachel sat down with Ken. They all quietly let out their Pokémon, who also watched.

As Rachel and Ken were looking at the pond, the fireflies suddenly scampered away from the middle of the pond, as if to make way for something larger. And something larger did come out. It was a Lapras, who, after coming out of the water, started singing.

Suddenly, a whole bunch of Pokémon came to watch. Some of them were injured, presumably by aspiring trainers who had fought them. There were also some that weren't native to the Kanto region, like Nuzleaf and Kirlia.

Eventually, Hikaru and Phoenix also sat down to watch, as their Pokémon also danced around the singing Lapras. Many of the Pokémon there were starting to change as well. They were evolving!

As Rachel saw Caterpies turn into Metapods and Metapods into Butterfree, she had to admire the beauty of it all. And all because of that singing Lapras...

Rachel kept watching and watching and watching. If there was just one night from her training that she did not want to forget, it would be this night.

* * *
As Rachel kept watching, she slowly lost focus of the whole scene. Am I falling asleep? she thought. Then, the Lapras turned on her, eyes pupilless and glowing red, and swallowed her whole into the darkness, just like that Pikachu did when she was in the hospital...

Rachel sat up, bolt upright, but was still in the darkness. She suddenly found that she wasn't really "sitting" in any sense of the word, and that there was a white "silhouette" of a Buoysel floating next to her. She tried to "swim" towards it, but as we all know, the laws of physics don't work that way. So she threw off one of her clothes, hoping to gain some momentum. She floated towards the Buoysel, but as she got closer, it seemed to get bigger, and more distant. As she kept on floating, the whiteness got larger and larger until it enveloped her whole like the darkness did.

Rachel tried to pinch herself, but to no avail. It didn't hurt, so she knew it was a dream. But what she also knew was that it was a dream she couldn't seem to wake up from, no matter how hard she tried.

The dream seemed to read her thoughts, and she woke up with a start after everything got brighter.

Rachel sat up, bolt upright, but was still in the darkness. Luckily, this time, she was sitting on hard ground. She had fallen asleep while watching the Lapras sing. Ken and Hikaru were there on the ground too, sleeping. She checked her watch. 4:38 in the morning. She looked up at the sky, and saw that it was not pitch black, but a very deep shade of indigo that said dawn was coming. Well, time to get back to sleep, she thought. And this time, when she went back to sleep, the dream did not disturb her again.

* * *
When they all woke up, Ken had a crick in his neck from sleeping in an awkward position that Hikaru managed to massage away. After Hikaru was done, Ken said, "I swore I could hear some cracking in my bones when he did that." They noticed that the Lapras was nowhere to be found.

They went back to Viridian City one more time, just to buy some items before moving on, because Ken decided that he needed some experience with real trainer battles before challenging a Gym Leader. "Like a Gym Leader battle isn't a real trainer battle..." said Rachel.

The store they went into felt more like a convenience store than somewhere you'd go to buy major items. Nevertheless, they got everything they needed for a while, mostly funded by Hikaru. "After all," he said after leaving the store, "I am the one who was recommended to be a Gym Leader. I have to act the part and be a leader."

They browsed around especially for food. Rachel found a bunch of sushi rolls that were on sale – 50 pyen a roll, plus 60 pyen for each item you put into the roll. And these weren't short rolls, either. They were at least nine inches long. "I'll take three of those rolls," said Rachel. "Put crab meat, cucumbers, and avocado into it."

"Ah, so you want California rolls?" said the man behind the counter. "Those get you an extra discount, I'll sell you each roll for 150 pyen."
"Oh, and two more rolls with salmon and artichokes in them," said Rachel. The man blinked in surprise when Rachel said "artichokes".

When the order was done, the total came to 690 pyen. Rachel handed the counterman the money, and he proceeded to package the sushi into a box, along with a cup that held soy sauce and wasabi, and some ginger. "Be careful about that wasabi, girl," said the counterman. "The radishes around here are grown with intensive care."

They came across a place that sold Pokeblock makers. Rachel also bought one of those for 1500 pyen, as well as about 20 berries that they had in stock to try the maker out. When the order was done, the total came to 2450 pyen. "That much for a bunch of berries?" asked Rachel, bewildered. She could pick them herself from the trees around here without paying anything!

They were just about to leave Viridian City onto Route 50 when Ken suddenly realized something. "Rachel," said Ken. "You're all better! Didn't you have, like, half a week before you could move about again?"

"Oh, that's a real mystery," said Rachel, remembering Phoenix. "I suddenly started feeling all better when Phoenix arrived in my hospital room window to take me away. And look," she said, pulling up half her shirt. "There's no hint of the wound!"

* * *
As they set away onto Route 50 at daytime, they heard a voice. "Hey!" it said. "C'mon over here! I want to battle one of you!"

It was a trainer, who was holding a butterfly net. "Our eyes met, so we have to battle!"
"No we don't," said Rachel, "unless you want to take on both of us." She pointed to Ken.

"It's alright," said Ken. "I need the training, anyway."

Hikaru stepped up, and offered to referee the match. "Nah," said the bug catcher, recognizing Hikaru as an official referee. "This is a friendly battle. No money at stake."

"In that case," said Ken, "How about we make it a full team battle? However many I have against however many you have."

"Well, I have six Caterpies," he said. "Alright, let's do it!"

"Go, Charmander!" shouted Ken, throwing a Pokeball. But his Pikachu popped out instead. "Wait, I never even put you in a Pokeball..." said Ken, who was about to take out his next one. "Go, Charmander!"

"What kind of trainer names his Pikachu Charmander..." said the bug catcher, under his breath. "Go, Caterpie!"

"Charmander, use Ember!" called out Ken. As the embers burned Caterpie to a crisp, it fainted almost immediately. The bug catcher sent out his next Pokémon. "Go, Caterpie!"

"Charmander, use—" Ken was about to call out his attack, but the bug catcher was faster. "Caterpie, shoot strings at the Charmander!"

"String Shot!" called out the Caterpie (but, of course, only Rachel heard it), as silky strings came out of its mouth, wrapping themselves around the Charmander. As Charmander struggled, the bug catcher said, "Now, tackle it!"

"Gyahh!" said the Caterpie, as it tackled the still-bound Charmander, sending him flying — a pitifully short distance. At that point, the Charmander broke free of the strings.

"Charmander, scratch away at that Caterpie!" The Charmander obeyed, and the second Caterpie also fainted.

"Come on out, my third Caterpie!" said the bug catcher. At this point, Ken was starting to get bored. "Why don't you just send them out all at once? I'll send out another Pokémon too."

"Alright then," said the bug catcher. "The rest of ya, come out as well!" But when they came out, one of them was a Metapod. "Hmm, it must have evolved when I wasn't looking..."

"Charmander!" called Ken. "Use Ember on all of them at once!" Once again, the embers burnt the three Caterpies to a crisp, making them faint almost immediately, but the Metapod stayed resilient. "Metapod!" the bug catcher called out. "Harden yourself up!"

The Metapod glowed white for a second as Ken watched, and then returned to normal. "What did that do?" asked Ken.

"It made him more resistent to attacks," said the bug catcher. "Try making your Charmander scratch him."

Ken did just that, but the scratches did almost nothing. "Alright then," said Ken. "In that case, try tackling the Metapod!"

The Charmander did just that, but the Metapod, even after bouncing off a tree, wasn't harmed very badly. "Didn't you say you had another Pokémon...?" asked the bug catcher.

"Oh yeah," said Ken. "Yeah, I do. Go, Denchu!" he said, calling his Pikachu to the scene. It ran up, and did a Thundershock. "No, Denchu! I didn't say—"

But it was too late. The Metapod lay on its side, fainted.

"Wow," said the bug catcher, returning all four of the Pokémon that he had out. "You took out all six of my Pokémon and your two don't even look tired! I'm impressed. Here, I'll give you all the change in my pocket," he said, taking out some coins from his pocket.

"I thought it was a friendly battle," said Ken. "I don't need your change."

But the bug catcher insisted so strongly that Ken did take the change, which totalled 144 pyen. Ken pocketed it, and they continued.

* * *
As they kept walking down the road, Ken was musing over the change he had just received. "My first won battle..." he said, fingering the seven coins that he had received, one of them being another 100-pyen coin. This one had a picture of a Zapdos with wings spread on one side, and another picture of Lugia on the other side with the "100" printed on it. Ken put this coin in his wallet along with the other 100-pyen coin that he had received the previous day.

They walked a little further, and noticed that the road came to an abrupt end. "I'm guessing, then, that we have to go into the woods again?" asked Rachel.

"I guess," said Ken. "Hey," he said, spotting a notice. "It says, 'Viridian Forest up ahead. Enter with extreme caution.'"

"There used to be a building here, in my time," said Hikaru. "And whatever happened to our bikes? Did we leave them in Viridian City?"

"Guess so," said Ken. "We can't use them in this forest, anyway."

And so, they walked into the forest, not knowing what lay ahead.

* * *
As they kept trudging on, Rachel's watch told them it was about time to eat lunch. So they let out their Pokémon, and Rachel took out her sushi rolls, along with Ken and Hikaru taking out what they had bought. As she chopped them up, she remembered – she still had that blender! And it was time to use it. She climbed the nearby trees and picked off a few of the berries that were growing on them.

She put them into the blender, and read the instruction manual. To start the blender, one had to press the button that corresponded to the quadrant that the arrow was currently in. After that, the blender would start spinning slowly. Each time a person pressed the button in their quadrant, the blender would spin faster and faster. After 60 seconds, the blender would stop spinning, and the finished Pokeblock would come out.

"Hey guys," said Rachel to the two boys who were eating their sandwiches and handing a few to their Pokémon as well. "Come and try this."

They organized themselves around the blender, and Rachel, Ken and Hikaru each took a button. Rachel let Suigun press the fourth button. The arrow was in Rachel's quadrant first, so she pressed it first. After that, Ken and Hikaru pressed them in their respective turns, and Suigun pressed it a fourth time. Now it was spinning respectably faster, and they still had a good 52 seconds left.

After another 30 seconds had passed, they were now pressing the buttons like mad. The arrow was spinning around extremely quickly now, at maybe 3 or 4 revolutions per second. By the time that time was up, they could not keep up with pressing the buttons because the arrow was spinning so fast. The resulting block that came out was a grey one. "Hmm," said Suigun. "Looks tasty." He popped it into his mouth. "Mmm! You guys are good at this!"

"I think he likes it," said Hikaru. "Let's make another one!"

They spent about an hour making the Pokeblocks and feeding them to their Pokémon, who liked them a whole lot. Rachel tasted a promising-looking purple one herself, but it tasted like old oatmeal, making her make a face. She wondered how the Pokémon could like such a flavour. Maybe their taste buds were connected to the wrong parts of their brains?

After they were finished, Rachel was clean out of berries. "Man, 950 pyen used up in one hour!" They walked onwards.

* * *
After walking for a few more hours, they realized that they were lost. "Are we even still on Route 50?" asked Ken. It was nearing night time, and they hadn't met a single trainer.

Suddenly, they came to a clearing where a whole bunch of trainers were hanging out next to some tents. "Hi," said one of the trainers who was in the pack, greeting three new people into their assembly. She was wearing a green beret, a green-and-brown school dress, and light brown camping boots.

"Welcome, trainers!" the trainer said, as if they weren't trainers themselves. "My name's Annaly, and we're holding a tournament here in the middle of the forest for starting starters. Would you like to join? The entry fee's only 1000 pyen a person," she continued. "You have plenty of time to make your decision, it starts in about 20 minutes. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy whatever we have here." She waved her hand to a wooden table with lots of refreshments on it, including a grill where one of the trainers who was good at barbecuing was cooking with her Chimchar, as well as many benches where trainers were socializing. "We're actually waiting for four more people. We have 20 already, counting you guys."

"I could help," said Hikaru, showing this trainer his referee's badge. "I'm Pallet Town's official trainer referee, so I could help judge matches."

"No. Fucking. Way," said Annaly, evidently in disbelief. "You're Hikaru Hoshimoto, that legendary judge who helped decide that really heavily disputed Championship match at age thirteen? You know, the one where Bill was accused of giving his Pokémon steroids."

"Well, it was only one judgment, and that Skarmory of Bill's reacted really badly when I tried to stroke its wings..."

Annaly squealed and called four of her friends over, who decided to crowd around Hikaru like fangirls. "Well," said Annaly, who was evidently the organizer of this event. "You and your two friends can join for free, then. But now you can't back out!" She grinned maliciously at Hikaru, and handed them three slips of paper, on which were written: "7", "13", and "19".

* * *
About twenty minutes later, four more people came, and Annaly greeted them in the same way. "OK, we have 24 people! Let's get this thing going!"

Annaly called all 24 trainers to a makeshift podium she had set up in front of the fireplace. "Alright, here we are! Let me hear you say whooo!"

All the trainers except for Ken and Rachel went "whooooo!".

"Come on, one more time, I didn't hear you!"

"Whoooooooo!" This time even Ken and Rachel did it.

"This is a World Pokémon Association-sanctioned tournament, which means that I'll explain the rules of the match right now," said Annaly. "You will be placed into groups of 6, based on your order of appearance. During that time, you will have two hours to battle every other trainer in your group once. Each trainer will use two Pokémon, one each in two battles without substitutions. If both winning Pokémon in one match are from one trainer, that trainer will receive 3 points, and if one Pokémon from each trainer wins, each trainer will receive 1 point. In the event of a double knockout, each trainer will receive 1 bonus point, and whoever wins the other match receives 2 points for it. At the end, the two trainers with the most points from each group will move on to the next round."

"After that, each of the two trainers in their groups will face off in one more Pokémon battle, to determine who will go to the semifinals, where they will compete in a simple elimination round. The winner will receive 10000 pyen as prize money, and second and third places will receive 5000 and 2000 pyen respectively." Annaly took a deep breath, presumably having said all the previous things in one gulp of air. "Well, I'm glad that's over," she said. "And now, to your groups! On the cards you received, 1 to 6, 7 to 12, 13 to 18, and 19 to 24 are the groups. Have fun!"

* * *
Rachel's first match was against a trainer named Shintei. Or, at least that's what he said his name was. "I specialize in Water-type Pokémon," he said, "So you'd better have a good show on."

Rachel considered her choices. She had two birds at her disposal, plus Suigun and a Sentret. She decided to use the birds. "Come on out, Clyde!" she said, as she took her Pidgey out of its Pokeball.

"What kind of name is that?" asked Shintei. "You're up, Mizugorou!" He let out a Mudkip. "What kind of a name is that?" asked Rachel right back.

Hikaru stepped up, and sounded the horn. "Clyde, fly upwards!"

As the Pidgey did so, Mizugorou tried to jump up and catch it, but to no avail – it was more than twenty feet up. "Now, dive in and peck it with your beak!"

"Jump on it when it tries to do that, Mizugorou!" called Shintei. "Goro!" the Mudkip called out in confirmation, jumping onto the diving Pidgey and pouncing on it. The Pidgey squawked as it flapped its wings to get off the Mudkip's body. "Try flying up and diving again!" said Rachel.

"Mizugorou, jump on it again!" called Shintei.

Wait for it... thought Rachel. As soon as the Mudkip started jumping, Rachel said, "use Agility to dodge!"

The Mudkip fell to the ground, feeling dizzy as Clyde swooped below its jump. Clyde easily pecked the Mudkip with its beak after diving a third time, knocking the Mudkip out. "Argh," said Shintei. "Return, Mizugorou!" he said, then throwing out another ball. "Go, Squirtle!" They waited for half a minute in silence. Rachel was confused. "Wait, why aren't we battling?"

"You have to return Clyde, Rachel," said Hikaru. "The rules said one Pokémon each round, for a total of two."

"Oh," said Rachel, until then oblivious to this fact. "Okay then, Clyde, you needed a rest anyway. Go, Taillow!"

The Taillow flew up in the air happily as it was let out, and dived straight into Rachel's face, knocking her onto the floor. "Ow!"
"Sorry, Rachel," said the Taillow. "I didn't see you there," it cooed.

"Squirtle, tackle the crap out of that Taillow!"

"Well, I never," said the Taillow, putting its wings on its "hips" and glaring at Shintei. "Taillow," said Rachel, beckoning. "Fly up or something, but don't just let that Squirtle tackle the crap out of you!"

"You too?" said the Taillow, who promptly flew to face Rachel to glare at her as the Squirtle tackled Rachel's feet, making her trip and fall face first onto the ground. "Owww," moaned Rachel, who now had spirals for eyes herself.

"Rachel is unable to battle," said Hikaru jokingly. "The winner is Squirtle!"
"Really?" said Shintei, suddenly lightening up.
"No," said Hikaru, "you need to knock out that Taillow."
"Phooey."

"Taillow, use Focus Energy!" The Taillow closed its eyes and started to glow yellow, then opening them again. The Squirtle, meanwhile, was about to slam back into it from behind. It did so, catching Taillow by surprise and releasing its Focus Energy effect, sending it flying into the air. "Squirtle, use Water Gun!" The Squirtle took aim, but missed the Taillow, who, in midair, refocused. At the same time, Rachel refocused herself, and suddenly found herself disembodied again.

What is this? asked Rachel to her Taillow, whose body she was now in.
I don't know either, said the Taillow, as they flew around in the air. But let's use it to our advantage! Now the nasty man with the Squirtle won't know what we're doing!

Meanwhile, Shintei was watching the scene in surprise. "Hey, Hikaru-san? Is it normal for a trainer to glow the same way a Pokémon does while they're battling?"
"I don't know what you mea—ahhh!" said Hikaru, dropping the horn when he saw Rachel.
"Kyaaaaa!" they heard the Taillow screech, as if it wanted the battle to continue. Rachel maintained her stance, but otherwise nothing else happened to her.
"Alright, I'll accept your challenge," said Shintei to the Taillow. "Squirtle, use Water Gun again!"
The Squirtle did so. "Blublublub!" As Rachel studied the scene, she noticed that the Squirtle's tail was undefended.
"Ready?" she asked her Taillow.
"Ready," the Taillow replied back, seemingly reading her thoughts.

The Taillow did a dive away from the stream of water and toward the Squirtle's tail, which it then handily picked up, flinging it into the air and back down again, straight onto a rock. The Squirtle's shell cracked a bit, knocking it out instantly. Rachel broke the synchro, and felt herself in her own body again. "Uh oh," said Hikaru, looking at the injured Squirtle. "We're going to have to get that checked out...but I think it's pretty clear that Rachel won both rounds. The winner is Rachel, who receives three points!" Hikaru honked the horn, stopping the timer at 4 minutes, 31.68 seconds.

As the next pair went up, Hikaru pulled Rachel over behind a tree. "Please don't do that again," said Hikaru. "You saw what it did to that Squirtle."
"It's not like I can control it," said Rachel, defensively. "It just happens whenever I'm really engaged in a battle with my Pokémon."
"Well, try not to make your Taillow throw a Squirtle onto a rock," he said back. "Anyway, let's go register your results."

* * *
They walked back to Annaly, who was waiting for trainer records. "Alright, Annaly, my girl Rachel here won her first match with both Pokémon."

"Great!" said Annaly, recording down the results. "In your group, you're currently in first place, Rachel. Everyone else has battled once, and they've all tied."

"Before we go back up, let's watch Ken battle," said Rachel, who heard people shouting battle commands all around her. "That other group there looks like they're going to take more than 15 minutes for their battle."

* * *
Ken's Charmander was, in his own words, "owning" its opponent, who was a bug. "Arrrrgh!" the other trainer was saying, as Rachel came in onto the battle. "Scyther, use Fury Cutter again!" The Charmander managed to dodge each one of the attacks, but was waiting for Ken to give the order. "Now, use Ember!"

The glowing embers that Charmander threw charred Scyther's skin, making it easy to attack. "Now, slam into it!" called Ken. The Charmander was more than happy to oblige, and the weakened Scyther was knocked out as soon as it hit the ground.

"I think that's a 1-1," said the referee, sounding the horn announcing that the match was over. "Both trainers get one point!"

"Hey, Rachel!" said Ken, spotting her and Hikaru. "I got a tie!"

"In a match of two one-on-one battles, that's pretty common," said Hikaru. "Who'd Denchu lose to?"

"A Geodude," said Ken. "And I chose first, so it wasn't my fault."

"I getcha," said Hikaru. "Don't worry, you'll just have to try and win the next one." He took a look at the schedule, which Annaly had given him a copy of. "You're on in another two battles, so just sit tight."
"Hey, don't you have a battle to be going to, too?" asked Ken, suspicious.
Hikaru looked at the schedule again, and felt inside his pocket for the small piece of paper that he had received from Annaly. His eyes widened as he looked at the schedule a third time. "Oh, crap."

-----------------------------------

In this chapter, I start pluralizing the names of Pokemon with the suffix of the last portmanteau-ed word in the name. So "Metapods" came about because of the word "pod" being turned into "pods".

I don't know why I started doing this, but it's stuck until I can go back and either correct the first four chapters or the ones from 5 on.

The reason I don't capitalize "tackle" here is because I'm using it as a verb - not as the name of the move. So the bug catcher is telling his Caterpie to literally tackle the Charmander, instead of using the move Tackle.

The bug catcher's Metapod is Level 9, hence his strange payout.
