Generational sprites

Some people have been changing trainer teams to use the sprites from corresponding generations (example). However, some people have reverted some of the changes (example).

Can we make a decision on this so that inconsistency doesn't occur? I'm definitely in favor of using sprites that match the generation (for trainers; probably not for manga/anime Pokemon listings).

I am for the use of sprites corresponding with the generation, especially for the articles relating to the main series of games. We can use the most current sprites for the anime and manga articles, as well as the various lists.

A bit off topic, but how would one implement those tables for trainers like Mira or Buck who have multiple listings of the same Pokemon with different sets, but no actual set team except for the Match Place?

Why would you use outdated sprites? We have these beautiful Fourth Gen sprites and you want to use old ones? That's dumb.

because the games take place from then. it makes complete sense. Cal there never had fancy Gen 4 spites, he had the classic crude Gen 2 sprites. and in any case, the only issue was with which sprite to use regarding Gold/Silver as its the only generation to implement two different sprites. me and TTE discussed it and decided to use Gold sprites because the player of Gold AND Silver is technically Gold, so, therefor he would see Gold sprites. sort of convoluted, but, its a way to go rather than messing about with this or that.

however, it wont matter anyway as all teams are getting changed to this format. granted, im not very fond of it..

...I seriously, um, thought you meant the player sprites.

I would say either DP or Pt sprites for all. Usually just ###.png ones though.

well, thats what we call a communication error.
i didnt understand what you meant by "seeing what Gold sees" so, i guess it makes sense now. granted, i still dont see why we shun the old sprites. we looked at them then, and we didnt hate them, but now its "oh god theyre hideous!" are we hypocrites? but as i said, no point in arguing. as we are supposedly updating to this new table thing.

If we have all the sprites from other gens uploaded, why not use them? Especially since we use the newest sprites for manga/anime/etc teams anyway.

I would tend to agree that historical accuracy takes precedence over aesthetic style. It is also not very aesthetic to display the same sprite multiple times throughout the same page.

However, adapting a generation-neutral table for trainer teams is the best solution, rendering this discussion rather unnecessary.

Several characters without sprites exist (such as GCN characters). How are they added at the top-left?

Gold and Silver don't have separate trainer sprites. How did you misinterpret each other?

Thought he meant Gold the character and Silver the character, rather than the game sprites. I was thinking "Well, why would you want a picture of Silver for Cal, Silver's sprite is used only for Silver... Cal's always Gold."

If you're going to upload all the sprites from the games to represent what they looked like in games past, why not actually use them for places that would go hand in hand in from their generation. I was actually pleasant surprised when I saw the old sprites on Koga's page last week, and I thought that was a damn cool idea for generational sprites to go with generational characters.

Why is "new" so much more important than "old"?

The newer sprites show more detail and are more accurate. Why would you use something that looks bad when you have something that looks so much better?

I am not sure why this is being discussed when everyone seems to agree that the best solution is to dispense with sprites for trainer teams.

The heart of any encyclopedia is the preservation the original material. Bulbapedia does not set out to depict the games in the best possible light so that the differences between old and new become non-existent.

Fans who are familiar with the sprites may not find a problem with using updated sprites in the context of older games, but Bulbapedia also serves as an important resource for users who have not played all the games. Those users might receive the wrong impression about the games upon seeing Erika's Tangela represented by a single sprite for Red/Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal and FireRed/LeafGreen. At least in the context of the anime and manga (and arguably the Stadium games), common sense alone dictates that the sprite is merely a convenient placeholder.

In addition, none of the post-Red/Blue sprites look bad, with exceptions being a matter of taste. In particular, it is debatable just how much more detailed the Generation IV sprites are compared to their Generation III counterparts. But more importantly, a collage of different sprites with varying quality is in many ways more appealing to the eye than a monotonous display of the same limited number of arguably better-quality sprites.

Again: This discussion is irrelevant now; there is a new style for any trainer with a party table on their page. See Lucian if you want to know how it looks, but there aren't any sprites involved any more. So stop argueing about it. We aren't using any main sprites anymore! They are all mini sprites, and there aren't any Generational differences on those.
