LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
Well this just absolutely blows :(

Really?

Well shoot. I admit that I didn't really watch much of his stuff, but I do kind of remember his being funny.

I can't believe he's dead...just found out this morning.

George Carlin will be missed.

Shit.... sad, just sad... he will be missed, very much... but he has left so much. Great man. :(

Yeah, it's much better he goes still in form than go with Alzheimer's or something like that... though George Burns did prove that some comedians can continue making people laugh even in their old age. Carlin would have probably been one of those, but I have to say that it was just good that we had him for as long as we did. He was a funny man, and he never stopped making us laugh!

Very sad, didn't know much of his stuff but reading the obituaries I think I need to look some of it up. It seems he was a very very talented comedian and I think it's a pity he only came to my attention now in this form. :/

btw:
A video he did on the subject of death:
