Getting a few things straight

I am going to say straight up that I'm here to talk about the infamous project known as "POL" or "Pokemon Online". I was asked at the beginning of this year to be the lead programmer on another revival of the project, and I decided to work on it as a contribution to the Pokèmon fandom. I am here now to try and repair our much damaged reputation (thanks Haris....*sarcasm*.) I only ask that you listen with open minds.

I know that there was a lot of controversy surrounding the version of POL that was started by Haris and I would like to state now that the current revival is in no way affiliated with him whatsoever. I know he lied about Nintendo authorising his project etc. and I would like to try and avoid people linking that with the new revival.

I openly admit now that the current version of POL has not recieved any kind of authorisation from Nintendo or their legal team whatsoever, we have made every effort to contact them and tell them about us but their general attitude seems to be that they'll just sit back and see where this goes for now. We definately DO NOT intend to profit from this project, we have no ads on our website and there will never be a registration fee charged by us. I am personally paying for the server out of my own pocket (to great expense on my own account I might add.) We do not intend in any way to rip-off Nintendo here.

The intention of this version of POL is purely just that we love Pokemon and we want to give something to the fandom that it has been asking for.

</rant>

Anyway I apologise for the wall of text, I just want to try and clear the air so to speak, though I'm not sure how much of the original controversy is still around. I just don't want anybody associating us with Haris or Konidias. I have not posted a link to our website here because I have been told that Archaic "hates" POL or the idea of it or something and I don't wish him to just kill this thread without me being able to try and explain things.

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, I just wanted a discussion on what the community here thinks about everything so I thought it would go in general discussion.

wow blackjack palazzo you must have big muscles to move a wall of text like that. :3

i've been with POL for awhile and i am nothing but faithful to this project, i'm curious to what others have to say. pandepic is the shinning star for this project and i am 100% certain he will push it in the right direction and get it finished.

If you want my honest opinion on POL, I think it isn't something that is needed at this time. We have our online pokemon games, and although they are not MMO status yet, I think it's at a point were we can save the drama. We have Netbattle and we have DPP/PBR; 8-10 years ago, POL was a very good idea and very much needed. The idea of a Pokemon game where everything was user created, let alone a chat-room where people can battle was really cool sounding. However, now, it's like we can get to that point eventually with an official source.

I don't know, I think I'm also bias though.. there is still a big part of me that feels it is a waist of time and talent to make fan games/ content, so I think it's best to just try your own stuff at this point.

I appreciate your opinion Bell02, and you do have a fair point. Honestly we are making POL because it's something that we want to play, it's something I have dreamed of playing for many years and never thought it would be made. I don't mean this as an attack on Nintendo in any way but I have not seen them show any interest whatsoever in building a Pokemon MMORPG which always amazed me considering how obviously the community wants one (POL is not the only project now, there are many many others with pretty big communities.)

That was hardly a wall of text. I've seen real walls of text =P

Well, like pandepic says, there's no intentions coming from gamefreak/nintendo for the creation of a pokemon MMO. No one's petitioning to get one made, either. The way I see it, a real pokemon MMO is only going to come out of this. This is a pretty large project, after all.

To the extent that you can have a POL project, well, we aren't going to sue you to stop it or anything--but what are you looking for from us? Is this just an ad saying "POL IS BACK, JOIN UP?"

Pokemon Online??? *goes and does a google search* Wow, it took me quite a few pages to find something (and had to use "POL Pandepic" with the quotes to find anything about this new incarnation or whatever) and found an interesting site about a game called POL (hopefully not a copy, a fad as big as the one I found would likely spawn imitators) yet in production, complete with an active forum.

(Sorry about the mondo giant sigle sentence paragraph lol. Continuing.

Anyways, this place seems really interesting, the idea of a pokemon MMO rpg has always been a dream of mine. Sure we have netbattle and shoddy, and we can trade/battle accross wi-fi, but thats not the same. It would be so amazing to adventure with my friends, to experience the journey and exist in a comprehensive world, and to at last be able to explore all four regions in the same game.

Maybe it has its faults, and if any of you guys have any complaints or anything to hold against it other than the controversy Pandepic raised in his post I'd like to hear them. Personally I want in, and I plan to read as much as I can on the subject, but I want to know what you guys have to say, since it seems some of you are familiar with this project.

So please, any feedback guys? I don't want this post to get ignored like most of my others in discussion topics have been. Please people, show me some love :)

evkl, this isn't exactly just an Ad saying POL is back up. The reason I posted here was to assure people that POL is no longer associated with people like Haris and to clear the name so to speak. Also I posted this to get people's opinion on the project.

Ditto. (Well, to an extent. I'm kind of a loner, so even in cooperative games, I'm often off doin' my own thing.)

Concerning Pokémon Online, I'd like to see it. I was there when they were testing it (with the big grass "room" with trees, and you had to stand next to someone to challenge or accept a challenge from someone else, and that one hacker who kept forcing people to battle them [which would either freeze the game or they'd make you lose in a flash, I can't remember], and the killer Explosion Weezing). I would love to see a full world, be able to start out in, say, Johto then travel to, say... Sinnoh, poke around in Snowpoint City. Even if I won't battle other people much (if at all), there's just something kind of... comforting about watching others around me do so and being able to relate with them on/talk to them about other aspects of the game while playing.

Concerning other Pokémon MMOs, there is one I'm kind of poking around in that's in beta testing called Pokémon World Online. (Though it's buggy as hell.) I'm not really a fan of the reputation system or the fact that it might take me weeks to find a Pikachu (or that I could suddenly and randomly lose a Pokémon >_>), but it's something.

This is something that is very important to me in the development of POL, making the people who don't battle competitively happy as well as the battlers. I want POL to be more than just a battle simulator with a chat room, it will be an adventure game.

Thank you for putting that so well Kthleen.

Pandepic, if you want to send me a PM, maybe we can talk. My attitudes towards any POL revivals over the past few years have certainly been coloured by Haris. I'm not sure at this point if we could give you any support (potential legal concerns being one significant issue here), but Bulbagarden thesedays is really all about the community and the fandom, and I'm behind any tools that might be used to get people involved and active.

I'll contact you soon Archaic, I will be interested to get your opinion on a few things.

I think you should keep trying to complete this dream project and I find that the argument, that due to the fact that we now have games with online capabilities you should stop your project, rather irrational. I hope you are able to realize this idea and make it happen somewhere in the future and I applaud Archaic for his open support for your game.

And just like that the thread stalls out? Come on, this place is awesome. The concept of teams, pokemon trainers gathering together to accomplish a common goal, perhaps for good, such as the pokemon G-men (slang for government man, or agents of the government for the purpose of preventing the use of pokemon in ways that endanger the public) or for evil, such as team rocket and other assorted villainies.

The way I see it, Pokemon Online is the online pokemon comunity's "dream," which I use in quotations because its infact not a dream, but a goal on the road to completion, a pokemon trainer battling his way through the gyms until he can at last rise up against the Elite Four and claim what is rightfully his! Ahem, sorry, got a little carried away there lol.

My point, is this is something completely amazing, and something I myself refuse to allow pass me by. I only hope my fellow bulbagardeners are willing to take the next step, to join me in welcoming this new flower to the garden, and nurturing it with the same loving care we've tended the rest of the garden. In time it just may Belossum into something even more beautiful than we'd ever imagined.

I think most people's concerns who are criticizing the idea has more to do with Nintendo sending Cease and Desist orders on the past projects with POL. Sure, I may think it isn't needed, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd still use it.

Maybe, if everything is done 100% from scratch with new poses it'd work to where Nintendo would leave them alone for a while. Personally, I'm kind of curious if it does happen will they use the Gen III, Gen IV, or something new entirely to base their artstyle on.

I can't speak about the art, since I'm not really involved, but I have done alot of reading on the forum and it seems their using the gen IV battle system. Maybe Nintendo will force them to stop, maybe they won't. Is it our place to decide? Why are people so over cautious anymore. What ever happened to stepping out and believing in something and taking a chance. Its not as though there is any risk to Bulbagarden anyway. If the orders come, the members of the forum would know, and with many Bulbagardeners among them we'll know and be able to withdraw our support just as easily as we could give it.

Is there something I'm missing about the risk/reward here?

POL is using resources that we have made ourselves (graphics, music, tiles etc.) The main question of legality is in our name, we chose the name Pokemon Online because we think it represents that POL is for the community and we have nothing to hide.
