The February issue of Kodansha's "Monthly Young Magazine" has revealed that a new Ghost in the Shell anime is in the works. Ghost in the Shell Arise is set for a 2013 release. Tow Ubukawa (Mardock Scramble) is supervising and writing the scripts, while Kazuchika Kise (Animation director of Evangelion 1.0, Evangelion 2.0 and Eden of the East: Paradise Lost) is directing.

I'm sorry, but this is the best news this year and I doubt anything will beat it.

Fuck yes! I've been waiting years for this. :-D

Interesting new character design...

Oh my God yes! I agree that nothing could top this, honestly.

Sweet! Love GITS. The character design of The major looks more like it did in the first movie than it did in Stand Alone Complex. I'll be interested to see what they do with her character in this incarnation.

The director of Stand Alone Complex has denied any involvement in Arise, so if the new character designs didn't tip you off, it's most likely a brand new series.

Personally, I think I prefer this new design. Although perhaps they should have kept her purple hair, as that was the main thing that was consistent between her designs in the Oshii films and Stand Alone Complex.

The promotional live-stream has just confirmed that Ghost in the Shell Arise is a 4-part 50-minute OVA series, with the first volume being released in June on DVD/BD in Japan. Each part will also be available in cinemas and online streaming.
