Well in the first season episode "Ghost of Maiden's Peak" we see a Ghasly who stomps Ash and Team Rocke. He does it apparently through Hypnosis...hypnosis that lets it step on Koffing and squiart Charmander.

Yet we've seen Ghost types use illusions after this like when the three visited the Tin Tower. They thought the place was on fire but it was just an illusion and didn't burn.

So...was the Ghastly in season 1 simply more powerful? Or maybe the Ghosts in the Tower just didn't want to actually hurt anybody?

The honest truth? Different writers and different times. When pokemon first started, the writers weren't forced to follow the games perfectly. Not only did the original games leave plenty of room for improvement and addition, but apparently nobody said they COULDN'T manipulate the world they had been given to work with. That's why you saw stuff like ghost pokemon being on par with legendaries, Natsume turning people into dolls, and all this alluded backstory of pokemon coming from space.

As time progressed though, I guess somebody at nintendo didn't like it. Although you could say the anime team did it, I have a stronger feeling it was nintendo who threw a fit. Since pokemon was getting big, they probably didn't like somebody messing with their story too much and didn't want to see the anime creating a whole bunch of inconsistencies. That's probably why you hardly see anything strange and unusual in the show nowadays, anything written about is usually stuff straight from the game...or less.

Actually, the Pokemon in space idea is still there. We saw the Clefary with the spaceship again in the Johto League IIRC.

And no oen said Indigo League rules are the only one... I simply asked a question why one Ghost Pokemon couldn't do what another did.

And what's wrong with Sabrina turning people to dolls? Psychic Pokemon, and people I guess, are h4x in the anime.

The Gastly in that episode could also speak human language, so it was probably more advanced than regular ghost Pokemon.

It's just a show. The writers weren't thinking about that one episode when they make future ghost pokemon eps.

It is a show, it's entirely fictional. There is hardly any continuity between episodes unless it involves a major quest (namely the gym badges and contest ribbons).
That explains how Team Rocket is able to survive being electrocuted several times in the anime without any ill effects on their health (they seem to recover from it every episode).

Keep in mind, that the series, much like the Pokemon in it, evolves as time goes on. Thinking back to the episode "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak" will have you remember that at one point, Ekans (Arbok?) wraps around the ghastly, who then turns into a Mongoose to scare the snake Pokemon away.

Now, that information considered, and considering that the Ghastly in question was a VERY OLD ghost Pokemon, don't you think he'd know about Zangoose, and turn into that? Not to mention a mongoose should not even exist, as it's not a Pokemon. It looked like a malicious Buizel.

Regular animals exist in the Pokeverse. Just don't see them very often.

I think it was just them taking some artistic liberties with the lack of significant amounts of official Pokémon lore. This is also the reason why Ash was shown interested in a girl once, or why there were normal animals shown (though the jury is still out on that one).

...you entirely missed the point. Where in the video games did it say Clefairy came from space? It didn't. In fact, the first series seemed to heavily hint at ALL pokemon coming from space, not just one species. Remember how Masaki got all up in arms during the lighthouse episode? Going on about how they wanted to know where pokemon came from and how many there were? Never did the games actually state any of this though. The most we got was all pokemon coming from Mew and even then it was highly believeable it came from space like the anime said. When the fourth generation came out however, this all went in the crapper. We were suddenly told pokemon had always existed on earth and apparently people evolved from them.

Dude, when did Natsume turn anything into a doll in the game? When did Natsume make ANYTHING shape shift in the game? Psychic powers are suppose to involve moving things around, not complete shape shifting! Natsume went from a character who could read your mind to a chick with God-like powers. The point I was trying to make is that the anime did several things that never occured in the games or took them to extremes. That's why you were able to have a ghost pokemon with powers that far exceeded what the games demonstrated. As time went on though, the writers stopped making up their own stuff and started going off what the games said.

Exist yet Zangoose did not. Gastly hax the 'verse anyway. VENISTOISE!
