I was browsing Bulbapedia as you do, and was looking at Giratina's wearabouts when I saw this in the Trivia section:

"Like Arceus, Giratina is speculated to be the third counterpart of Dialga and Palkia, thus the version mascot of the third game."

Does this mean the game's already been confirmed, or that it's considered inevitable?

It seems pretty likely...although, Mesprit being the more unique of the trio like Suicune was is a good guess/

Although...I'd love it to be Heatran on the box. Or Regigigas. Pokemon Boogalo Version.

Mespirit would be good, considering you have to chase the little bugger round the map and seem to share a "special connection" with it or something. Still, just made me think of the possible storyline of Pokemon whatever-it's-going-to-end-up-being-called.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something different than the usual as the mascot this time around - something similar to Suicune in Crystal would be nice. (And really, with only Rayquaza in Emerald being demonstrative of the notion that indicates that Giratina could be the mascot, it's not a very strong pattern.)

Arceus is also something I see as a possibility (it's more of an equivilent to Dialga/Palkia than Giratina, and fits the storyline rather well). I can see them breaking the pattern for unobtainbles and placing Arceus on the box in all honesty.

Not that massive a leap of surprise either really. Shaymin will be revealed next year, and Arceus the year after that in all likelihood - and that'll probably be the same year that a third game to D/P comes out, so it does fit in.

Yeah, I like the idea of it being Arceus, but that would cause problems for people with Diamond and Pearl who have to get it through an event. Seems a bit like a cop out being able to trade it from "insert third installment's name here" to your copy of D/P.

PS. What is Shaymin all about? Seems pretty pointless to me, I'd rather have a Bulbasaur anyday. It's a guinea pig covered in moss...

That's assuming that Arceus was ever planned as an event (or event exclusive) Pokemon. It could simply be that it was planned all along for the third game - there are many foreshadowing examples throughout D/P that seem to indicate that the entire Generation is well planned ahead this time around. Hell, even that fact that D/P's storyline is left open-ended in the vein of a movie seeking a sequel indicates that we can't expect what we got last time around just 'cos we got it last time around.

I doubt it'll be any of the unobtainables. None of them have ever been a game mascot.

Eh, I'm placing my bets on Giratina. It has the eyes and the type.

Anyway, note I just noticed becuase I'm that slow: Azelf's blue like Dialga and Mesprit's pink like Palkia. Uxie's yellow. Regardless of who the third game's mascot is, I'm betting the color will be yellow.

Giratina has some yellow...

Hey! I know it sounds kinda weird, but what if the mascot is a pre-determined shiny Pokémon?

Heck, it woulda been cool to have the third Johto game about the Red Gyarados...if only it'd had been a second-gen Pokémon...

I could see Giratina being the next mascot.
Rayquaza wasn't even mentioned really in Ruby/Sapphire, yet you could catch him. Then Emerald came out, and he was a huge part of it.

Giratina could be the same way. They are no references to him in the game, that I recall, so I could see them doing this again.

How could the designing of an event that is never supposed to see the light of day possibly be construed as "planning ahead"?

You are in fact suggesting another take on last generation's Altering Cave, which had been deemed to be the only means of obtaining Aipom, Pineco, Stantler, Houndour, Mareep, Shuckle, Smeargle and Teddiursa sans Colosseum, only for that impression to be rectified come Emerald (where Altering Cave was ironically included). It would be even more confounding if that happened with Arceus, a Pokémon not yet obtainable, in what is allegedly an improved generation.

It's fairly obvious that it will be the offspring of a dunsparce and magikarp.. some sort of magikarce.

Yes... anywho Dialga/Palkia represent Time and Space respectively, so it would all come to the counterpart of that. What would be a counterpart to Time and Space though... we could probably consider Giratina a Dimensional pokemon, as it "is said to live in a world on the reverse side of ours".

I still want a magikarce =(

I still think the fact that Giratina is the only non-mascot, non-event Poke banned from the Battle Tower is significant. It's true that Mewtwo isn't an official mascot per se, but I think we can all agree that he is a flagship Poke all the same.

It just seems odd that Giratina is pretty much the sole exception to the Battle Tower rules. That, more than anything else, makes me think the next mascot will be Giratina. In fact, that's all I'm going on, because that's the only actual evidence (inconclusive though it may be) that exists at this time.

I know that PokemonOpal.com is registered - by Nintendo themselves.

Giratina could be based on the word "girasol" - meaning fire opal.

It is also a Dragon type like Palkia and Dialga.

It could perhaps represent a void in time and space, and be termed renegade because it defies the boundaries of time and space.

I'd really like the idea of Mesprit as the Mascot. Giratinas is rather predictable. I say they go the unpredictable route and have Arceus. That'd be awesome. Yeah, why doe sit have to be an event. It's not unobtainable persay, more that it's not included in DP. Would be awesome, none-the-less.

Mesprit would be going the Crystal route, which would be cool. Then again, for all we know, Pachirisu could be the mascot and follow you around like Pikachu xD

I think Giratina will be the next mascot, simply because it's obviously a counterpart to Dialga and Palkia.

Take a look at the movesets of all three. Pretty damn similar overall, with the differences being their signature moves and a few other moves...which all differ at the same level for each Pokemon. Same goes for their base stats - they have the same numbers, the only differences are in which stats have which numbers.
All of them also have Dragon as one of their types, they have similar faces, and they all have gems on their bodies somewhere. And don't forget the names. Dialga -Diamond, Palkia -Pearl, Giratina - Girasol(a form of opal).

And to be honest, nothing else makes a whole lot of sense. Suicune was a weird choice for Crystal, but you have to bear in mind there was no counterpart to Lugia and Ho-oh so they had to pick SOMETHING. Mesprit...really doesn't seem special enough to be a mascot. Especially if we assume that, like with every other third game, DP's third game won't change the storyline drastically. What power does Mesprit have that could rival warping time and space? Making people emotionless doesn't exactly bring universe-destroying power to mind. Granted, Giratina's powers are ill-defined right now, but at least that gives Gamefreak room to give it an appropriately havoc-wreaking ability. :p

I could register
PokemonCrackedLimestone.com and have it direct to nintendo.com.... it's not exactly complex ;)

Yea, I know. But I was just saying that because if you do the whole pokemonopal.com like that guy said, it links you to nintendo

I'm here hoping for a little day-trip to an alternate universe for Lucas/Dawn. That would be made of all kinds of win.

And yes, I'm one of the few that thinks the Girasol evidence cancels out evidence to suggest anything other than Giratina (and Opal.)

I think it's Giratina too, but there's only one problem that I see with it. Giratina is a post-National Dex legendary, so unless they give you the National Dex early, what are they gonna do about that?
