Mijumaru, Oshawott, Moustillon, Ottaro... Except for a few species, Pokemon are known by many different names around the world. So let's discuss which ones we're least fond of.

I whole heartedly despise most of the English Gen 5 names

Stunky. Just... Stunky. It's a skunk, we get it, but did you have to give it such a fugly-ass name?! It isn't helping your case that it and its evolution's cries sound like farting.

I don't like the names for the fully evolved Gen 6 starters. Chesnaught just sounds.. stupid (even though I love the Pokemon itself), Delphox is ok I guess but not really a name that sticks with you, and Greninja just sounds really weird.

Any of the Japanese names that are just an English word instantly get last place to me. Freezer? Thunder? Fire? Spear? Lizard? Ghost? Strike? Lucky? No effort on those at all. Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Beedrill, Charmeleon, Haunter, Scyther, and Chansey all the way.

I'm not a fan of those, either~ Maybe to the Japanese they sound more interesting, but you'd think they could at least spice the name up with some pizzazz or flare. But, no, we just get Sand.

Seel, Persian, Onix, Sandile, etc. Special mention goes to Malamar. Malamar isn't a terrible name, just kind of meh, but when you compare that to its amazing japanese name -- Calamanero -- it's pretty trash.

They were given those names to make them some exotic because those words are alien in Japan.

Okay, everyone. I have found my new dead last place when it comes to Pokemon names. This is a name so vile, not even Dogasu could disagree with its English name change.

Vulgina, Mandibuzz's Japanese name.

You know, the team that made "Pacman" realized that the original name for the game ("Puckman") could easily be changed to an expletive. So I gotta wonder how no one caught what Mandibuzz's original Japanese name sounded like. And this isn't a case of semi-obscure slang like with "Emonga". No, I'm certain the term Mandibuzz's Japanese name sounds like (not saying it here lest I possibly get an infraction for vulgarity) is a widely-known medical term known to all English dialects. And yes, I know it's supposed to be a portmanteau of "vulture" and "regina." In that case, why not a more harmless name like "Vulreina" (バルレイナ)?!

In short, Pokemon Japan made a gigantic mistake.

The pronounciation is Ba-Ru-Ji-Na. It's not even similar to vagina - which I assume you are talking about. And even if it does, I really don't understand how vagina is vulgar when it's just a part of the human body. It's not even an offensive slang word :/

It's similar enough, especially in the spelling. And as the vagina is a reproductive organ, it's generally considered a term to stay away from in non-medical contexts.

I know its a reproductive organ and it's just a body part that exists in the human body like the ovaries, bladder, intestines, blood vessels, brain, stomach, etc. If it's a term that's offensive except when doctors and nurses say it, then there's something seriously wrong with how it eventually ended up that way.

But enough with that. If you choose to consider it as offensive, then I guess its your opinion.

Seel, Pachirisu, Emolga, and Stunfisk are the ones that come to mind. I'm not well versed in the names of other languages.

Just for the record, what's the problem with "Emonga"? People mentioned "mong", but I have no idea what that means...

It's a British epithet toward mentally handicapped people.

Klink, Klang, Klinklang... Or Chlingling. So very imaginative! :'D

The common picture you get is "with that logic you probably don't like half of Pokemon names", which isn't really true. Imho names which differ from a real word by one or two letters (Seel, Mankey) or are like two words put together (Primeape, Golduck), are okay. Likes and dislikes are never black and white however, where one draws the line of liking something doesn't have to be the same for someone else. Not all people like the same Pokemon designs either. Ditto and Wynaut, those I don't like but I'm more neutral about them than those I mentioned first. However I can't say I like or love a certain type of name, all words and names end up sounding odd if you analyze them enough.

Also, some Pokemon names just "taste" odd in my mind or if spoken out loud. Hoopa mostly in my mind, haven't yet figured out why. Regigigas if spoken out loud; it's always like "regigigigigigi....gas..? o_o' " Or "Alololomomomomolalalalaaa", it took me months to say it proprely - others had fun listening to me learning it. XD

Half of japanese Pokemon names don't sound well-thought-out either, or... let's say chinese names of Pokemon! If someone know what Surskit's or Tepig's chinese names mean, well... maybe I'll let you figure it out. Some french and german names are also just hilarious - luckily Pokemon names don't have finnish translations yet. X)

Talonflame - talon+flame= uncreative to say the least. Japan's name, Fiarrow works much better I think because the words are actually merged rather than juxtaposed with no amalgamation, as is the case with most other Poke names.

Klink, Klang and Klingklang are boring and unoriginal names. Same goes for the Japanese names of Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno.

Feebas sounds unappealing and not a favorite of mine. Good thing it has an evolution.
