Since Gold is called Hibiki now if you play as Kotone, so is that his offcial name because I'm really confused now.

Yes. Hibiki is his official name. I personally don't get why bulbapedia keeps calling him gold (Or why they call Barry "Pearl")

Rather catchy name, neh?

Maybe because it's not an official english name?

Rather, it hasn't been announced as his official english name.

Because this isn't the anime and the games don't use anime names for the rivals?

Anyone know what Hibiki's English name is? And Katones too?

The game never gave the name Pearl to Barry. Barry is the first custom name available when you get to name him. Why did you think the Anime called him Barry? -.-'

IS Barry his official name? Or just the animes?

Barry is the first name listed over two games while Pearl is only for Diamond and a 50/50 chance in Platinum.

It should be Barry, but some admins are just stubborn like that.

Also think Silver's article should be ??? since he isn't given a real name, which can be stated in the article.

The entire trainer names issue is bullshit.
I had Silver, so Gold will always be Silver to me.

These arguments are why we either need a huge ass poll that everyone takes part in, or we go "GEN 2 MALE TRAINER" and "GEN 4 GEN 2 REMAKE FEMALE TRAINER"

I think that with the first set of games, the main character was known by the "primary" name (Red) and the rival went by the "secondary" game name (Green). So with that precedent, we assume the rival in GSC is Silver. RSE gave us real names. DPPt gave real names to the main characters but none to the rival. So we automatically use Pearl, since that's the secondary game in the set.

Of course, this is all conjecture, feel free to correct me if I'm way off base.

Yeah, the name Pearl has 0 evidence other than leaving it blank... yet he's called Barry in the anime, and it's plain awkward to have a group of friends called "Dawn, Lucas, and Pearl." I'd feel a little less manly. XD

And we should probably call Silver "Gold and Silver Rival" or "HGSS Rival" because calling him ??? is a little weird. o.o; Or we can look up what his in-game data calls him, unless it defaults to ???. In the English version, of course. :)

Theres more to it than just the anime calling him Barry. The games have legit reasons too. Check the talk page of his. Theres a lot of arguement going on there.

and they don't have English names yet

If ??? can't work due to technical reasons, then it should just stay as Silver because two of the original Gen II games agree with it, even though the remakes refer to him as Heart or Soul apparently.

....No.

Every Player Character/Rival has an offcial Canon name, those names should be used and implemented on Bulbapedia.

Red, Green (Leaf, though she's not a "canon" character anyway, so who gives a shit about her, amirite?)

Hibiki/Kotone, Rival ( unnamed, should be reffered to as HGSS rival on the pedia)

Haruka/May, Bredan, Wally (is he a rival?)

etc.

EDIT:

This I agree with.

While we're going all up in arms about the names the Bulbapedia uses, why does Green/Blue [depending on translation, I mean the green one] continue to be referred to as Leaf?

Yeah that was official somewhere. Totally.

Leaf's name was found in the games' data as a dummied-out opponent Trainer, alongside Red (whose name is Red as it was before).

That's from Leaf's Bulbapedia page.

We're keeping it Gold because we don't wanna move it twice like we're going to have to with Kotone, IF in the internal data he's not Gold anyway.

As for Pearl, would you prefer we called Blue/Green "Gary"? No. He's not Gary. First name choice in Red and Yellow. Just like "Barry" is in Diamond and Platinum. Whoop dee doo. Shall we call Brendan "Landon" and May "Marina" now?

And Leaf is not "Green" in the US or "Blue" in Japan because she was introduced in FRLG. She couldn't be Green, since that's the rival, so she's Leaf, because in Gen III, THERE WAS NO BLUE. It's why Kotone's not "Kris"! There's no Crystal in Gen IV!

Much like internal data in FRLG and E refers to "Player BRENDAN", "Player MAY", "Player RED", and "Player LEAF", I wouldn't doubt that data in HGSS refers to "Player Lucas", "Player Dawn", "Player Gold", and "Player Soul". Hibiki's just a name for Gold because "Gold" is a really weird name for a kid. Same with Kotone; Soul's a weird name. And Silver gets the "Heart" or "Soul" by default because "Gold" and "Silver" are the first listed possible names for the player. But like FRLG kept Red and Green as Red and Green (and finally corrected that little "Blue" issue overseas), and HGSS has them, STILL, as Red and Green, not Ash/Satoshi and Gary/Shigeru, I'd not doubt Gold is still Gold in the data, and Kotone is either Kris or Soul.
