So, a few weeks before HGSS was released I wrote this (you can probably find the parts I recently edited). I figured that while it is getting good coverage on Devart, you all might want to read it as well. This is my take on how the Silver vs Gold battle in Goldenrod City should have gone.
Sad to say, the in-game event will not be this emotional.

GOLD vs SILVER: SIEGE CONFESSIONS
Gold descended the stairs of the Goldenrod City Underground. What with Team Rocket and their siege of the city, the normally bustling underground market was deserted, all the trainers and shopkeepers hiding out at home. Gold saw a sign on the wall next to a hallway, with an arrow pointing to the left. The sign said, “Warehouse, Authorized Personnel Only!” Gold jingled the key in his pocket and smiled. Like anyone was going to bust him for trying to rescue the Director of the Radio Tower. He beckoned to his Typhlosion who was following him and the two walked down the hallway in the glow of flames.
Behind them, a shadowy figure seemed to melt out of the wall. A vivid shade of red, like blood, seemed to flow from the top of his head. Next to him, a Feraligator looked hungrily at the distant trainer and his pokemon.
When he reached the end of the hall, Gold unlocked the door to the warehouse and slipped inside. He didn’t bother to lock it because if he got caught down here, no one would be able to come and help him. The trainer and his pokemon walked down another flight of stair, neither realizing the door opening behind them.
Gold reached a long, damp hallway. It didn’t look much like a warehouse, more like a maintenance area. In fact, that’s probably exactly what it was. Before he could investigate further, a cold voice came from behind him.
“Hello Gold.”
Gold rolled his eyes. Of all the times for this freak to show up, it just had to be now. “What do you want Silver?” Gold asked.
Silver, the red-haired trainer with the Feraligator, slipped out from the shadows of the stairs. “I have come,” he said. “To take Team Rocket down. And you, unfortunately, keep getting in my way.”
Gold wasn’t impressed. Or scared. He said, “I’m the one who is going to take down Team Rocket. They’ve caused me enough trouble and I won’t stand to see anyone else harmed because of them. You have no reason. Every time you show up, you just get beaten. Why bother?”
Silver steamed. “The Lance guy was a fluke. A rarity of a trainer. You got lucky.”
“Go home Silver. If you even have one. This isn’t your fight. It never was.”
With a cry, Silver threw his pokeball at the ground. A Golbat flew out of the ball. “It was always my fight! Ever since I was born, it has been my fight! BITE!” The Golbat flew in to bite down on Typhlosion. Gold yelled at it to dodge.
The New Bark Town trainer looked at his rival. “What do you mean?” he asked. “You never once laid a finger on Team Rocket. You have no reason to hate them. Typhlosion, Flame Wheel!”
Silver shook his head. “You never got it did you! Return, Golbat. Magnemite, you’re up. Team Rocket is what tore my family apart. And I hated every minute of it. Sonicboom!”
“Flamethrower!” Gold cried. The Magnemite was knocked out by the fiery blast. “What do you mean? Why is it every time we talk about Team Rocket you always get like this? Answer me, Silver! Why do you hate Team Rocket?” Silver’s Haunter was sent onto the field.
Silver glared. “Shadowball.” Typhlosion dodged. “It is none of your concern. Just know that I will take down Team Rocket and you will not get in my way again. I tire of these constant scuffles we have. My energy and time is better spent on these lowlifes.” Haunter had fainted by now. Silver’s stolen Sneasel was sent on the battlefield.
Gold had Typhlosion use Fire Punch. “Silver, you need to tell me. If we have common goals we should help each other, instead of fighting like this!” Sneasel was sent flying.
Silver sent out his final pokemon, Feraligator. “Gold, I will never work with you. We have been enemies far to long. I have no desire to change our relationship. I hate you, you don’t like me. There is nothing more and never will be.”
The two final starters were struggling against each other, neither giving ground and neither using attacks of its respective type. Gold cried, “Silver I need to know this.
“No, you don’t.”
“Tell me.”
“Don’t you get it? Buzz off!”
“Why do you hate Team Rocket?”
“I’m not talking about it!”
“Why Silver!? WHY!?”
“Because he’s my father!”
Gold was stunned, and at the same time confused. “Who’s your father?”
Silver gave Gold his harshest glare. “Giovanni, the ex-leader of Team Rocket.”
The redhead hung his head. "Team Rocket failed him. He had a vision. A dream. And he had to rely on those... those weaklings! They failed him! And because of that, my father left me. Alone. To care for myself. All he wanted was to get stronger!"
Silver was shouting now. Gold hoped no Team Rocket members would hear. Granted, none had heard the battle going on, so perhaps there wasn't anything to worry about.
"It's all Team Rocket's fault! Apollo! Athena! Rans! Lambda! All of them!" Silver cried. "Because they were too weak to defeat an eleven year old CHILD, my father left me and never returned. That is why I hate the weak, Gold. That is why I hate Team Rocket. And that is why I, and me alone, am the one who must defeat them. They. must. Suffer!"
And that’s when Feraligator could last no longer and fainted. Gold had defeated his rival once again.
Silver stared in shock. For a full minute he said nothing, just staring at his stolen pokemon, laying on the ground. Finally, he called back his pokemon and walked off, muttering what sounded oddly like an apology. Gold could already hear people running down the hallway to see what the commotion was. Rockets probably. About time. Gold gave Silver one last look, as the crimson-haired son of Giovanni walked up the stairs. It would be many weeks before they would see each other again, practically at the gates of the Pokemon League. By then, Team Rocket will have disbanded forever, and Silver’s lifetime obsession, his passion to see the downfall of his father’s empire, would be achieved. But not by him. By the very boy who defeated him in the Underground of Goldenrod. Gold. The Hero of Johto. Its heart and its soul.
Sad to say, the in-game event will not be this emotional.
