So, with GO coming...where do you think each species of Pokémon should be found? What landmarks near you do you think could be home to interesting species?

Remember, they should be places people can reasonably visit. And please don't just list the freaking legendaries :p

I personally hope they don't add Ghost Pokémon in graveyards, because that would just be creepy XD

Anyway, in the town of Vordingborg, where I live not too far away, there's the ruins of the old Vordingborg Castle that's available to visit for everyone. I can imagine Golett or Golurk, Pidgey/Tailow (we got a lot of swallows here in Denmark) being available there, just to give some few examples. Also, there's a nearby harbor, Wingull and other water Pokémon wouldn't go amiss there.

Ariados, Ekans, Croconaw, Sharpedo, Beedrill, Tentacool, Tentacruel in Australia since like the country is a full of deadly animals.

Speaking of locations, I wonder if they'll make sure to put Pokémon EVERYWHERE around the world, without neglecting smaller countries that are not supported by Nintendo and are often completely ignored and forgotten in all possible ways when it comes to these stuff.
I'm pretty sure that the Google Maps thing back then did make effort to put them all over the world, so hopefully they'll be smart enough to remember that.
Pokémon Shuffle is already a proof that even unsupported countries (most of them at least?) will be able to download and play the game and even use the micro transactions feature (which I only point out cause apparently it's not such an obvious idea as you'd imagine it is, considering the 3DS eShop won't accept my credit card...)
Of course if there are any special events they'll definitely ignore such countries which is sad for me, but at least the general gameplay should be able to be done everywhere in the world. I don't want to start playing the game and realize there are absolutely no Pokémon to be found where I live...
(Well, I'm not too excited for the game in general as I said before, but I definitely will try playing it once it's out, so I still hope they do it as right as possible)

My thoughts are that they're going to detect a type of environment (using your location), and different kinds of Pokemon will appear based on the type of environment you're in, rather than the specific location. This would allow for the game to easily be applicable to countries all across the world. Landmarks would be reserved for Legendary and Mythical Pokemon, like we see with the Mewtwo challenge in Time Square in the trailer.

Of course, they could still also have region-specific Pokemon with that system, just less dramatically so. Plus, I'm guessing they're going to make it so that the first place you use it you will find a Pikachu, as part of a tutorial.

Don't mean to drain the discussion here, just that what I both would like to see and think will happen.

I'm mostly interested in how legendary Pokémon will be handled. Will there be like special events or something similar to that?

Will Mew be found under a truck? Moltres on top of a volcano? Articuno on Mt. Everest?

And I agree with @Piplup; I hope smaller countries aren't ignored and neglected.

This is April Fool's Poke-Hunting replay again with upgraded techs :p

For everyone worried about locations, it's extremely easy to fake your location on both apple and android phones, making it so no matter where you live in the world, you can easily set your location to be in the right place.

I'll probably end up writing an instruction guide detailing just that on release.

I was just about to ask here if it's possible to make it think you live (or supposedly traveling) elsewhere in the world lol
If you can do that then it's great, although I'd still hope they won't be stupid enough to truly leave certain countries Pokémon-less or purposely only give them very few ones...

It might work much like Ingress' database for landmarks and objects of interests. It's not only big landmarks that get indexed, but things like park signs, local churches and businesses, community centres, etc. The community can also submit new locations into the database and they'll get added system-wide if approved.

Chances are that you'll be able to find plenty of Pokemon in most countries, but for things like major organized events that you're supposed to attend in-person, of course only the biggest cities will get them.

Think twice before you do it. Depending on the game's mechanics, it could be a game-breaking exploit/cheat, no different from me, say, publishing a way to create hacked Pokemon and insert them into the 3DS games. I'm not sure if BMG supports this kind of thing.

Like how some of the Vivillon forms ended up being one of the rarest because not many people played pokemon there compared to other countries...

I don't think any Pokémon should be exclusive to real world locations. At all. Except for Event Legendaries, maybe.

I would like to see Pokémon divided by habitat, however. Mountains, Forests, Jungles, Beaches, Open Ocean, Tundra, Deserts, Rivers, Urban areas, Caves, Fields and (if holding up your iPod to the sky), Aerial and Interstellar.

I'm thinking a mix. Meeting exotic pokémon from elsewhere in the world when you meet someone who's visited (say) another continent would be amazing.

I would rather see that reversed. If common Pokemon are exclusive to locations, it will encourage people to trade with one another. I'm assuming that all existing Pokemon species will be spread across the world, not just a hundred or so like in the normal games. About Legendary Pokemon, however, why would they be set in certain locations? People will rarely trade them. I think the phantom Pokemon, like Mew, should appear randomly and very rarely, and be caught only once. Why I think Mew should appear at random, is that it is said to appear to people who have a pure heart and who really wish to see it, and I therefore think that fate should decide who encounters it.

Other Pokemon, like the bird and beast trio, could appear based on habitat (as said above), but maybe only at certain times of the year and be very rare and only caught once. If they were located by special locations, it would be a lot of work for the developers to make sure they are placed where it is possible for players to get them, which would be at a lot of locations, considering the number of players.

EDIT: Although I think it would be cool if certain events involving powerful Pokemon would take place at certain locations. Like a Deoxys attacking for instance. Or the Mewtwo in the trailer. I'm not sure how to make it best available for all players though. This is the problem when games start to be connected to physical space, though I like the idea of moving around and exploring outside.

Perhaps an event like that could be the introduction of a new Pokemon in the game; so once the Mewtwo appeared in the city and players fought it, it would start to appear as a wild Pokemon where people could catch it. That means that even if you cannot experience the special event, you can still get the Pokemon by other means and experience your own personal encounter with it. Maybe not as cool as if you would have been where it first appeared, but I can't think of a better idea. I guess the good thing about a personal encounter with Mewtwo, however, would be the surprise of encountering such a rare Pokemon and you would be all alone to battle it and that in itself would be exciting, not the same as meeting it with other people. So, both kinds of encounters have their good and bad sides.

I only hope that they don't forget about Chile (and South America in general).

And just thinking about this a little bit - I think the pokemon aren't going to be nearly as geographically restricted as some think. If everyone in Arizona ends up with the same Sandshrew/Cacnea/Baltoy/desert stuff (or even the same pool of 30 pokemon) nobody is going to play, because the vast majority of people aren't traveling constantly and have to either work or go to school in a single city.

But having said that, I think some pokemon could be tied to a "vacation" location. Not that I'm saying they will for sure do this but I think it could be interesting. Like, if you go on a trip to a different place, you have a higher than normal chance to encounter some rare pokemon, regardless of where you came from or where you went to, as long as you traveled.

I like the idea that legendaries are almost impossible to get. Most people should not be able to encounter any of them without going off on an epic adventure looking for one specific legendary pokémon. That would make encountering one so much more epic.

I agree with the people that say the Pokémon should be distributed basen on terrain. Like, in the beach, you can find Pokémon such as Staryu and Clauncher, in cities you can find Pokémon such as Meowth and Skitty, etc.
