So, what pokemon do you usually use in contests? Why, in what category and what moves, what combos are good and what berries are the best to use?
This thread was created because I noticed that my Absol had troubles competing even though it's rather good condition and has good attacks... What's wrong?
In a nutshell: What is your contest-team like? Any tips for newbies (I'm not a newbie, just dumb I guess)

What kind of food does your Absol like?

When I want to use a Pokemon for contests, I specificaly go out looking for one who has good moves to match the kind of food it likes.

I've heard people say that Wiscash is the best for cute contests, but I've never gotten a Wiscash who likes sweet food to test it out.

My current contest Pokemon:

Apple-Camerupt♀ for Cute Contests.

Tide-Piplup♂ for bueaty contests.

Blink-Azelf for smart contests.

I have a Swampert for Tough, Sableye for Smart, and Wailord for Beauty. They've each won Master Class in both Hoenn and Sinnoh. I want to raise a Linoone for Cute contests, but I haven't gotten around to it. I have a shiny Ledian who shows Cool Contest potential but I can't seem to make any good Spicy Poffins for her.

Raichu and other Electric-types seem to be most suitable for Cool contests. Fire-type moves seem to be either Cool or Beauty, Fighting moves Tough, and most status-affecting moves are either Cute or Smart, I think.

(Edit) Oh, and moves.

Miki the Swampert:
Take Down
Focus Punch
Earthquake
Mud Shot

Sadie the Sableye:
Confuse Ray
Shadow Ball
Taunt
Calm Mind

Wally the Wailord:
Mist
Water Pulse
Water Spout
Whirlpool

Tangerine the Ledian:
Silver Wind (Actually a Beauty move, but having a move out of its specialty doesn't hinder you terribly as long as it at least works alongside the other moves.)
Agility
Swift
Solarbeam

And my Linoone will probly have Rest and/or Belly Drum, plus other things I haven't worked out yet.

Also, a good tip to find out what a suitable contest-type might be for a certian Pokemon is to take a high-level member of that species to the Move Tutor. One that's already had a chance to learn all its natural moves. When the list of relearnable moves pops up you can switch it over to see the Contest types of the moves, and therefore which type it learns the most of.

Also, I believe Serebii's Pokemon of the Week segment has suggestions for Hoenn contests, but they stopped in the D/P edition for some reason. It can still serve as a jumping-point though, at least for pre-4th gen Pokemon.

Milotic is obviously a good choice for beauty contests.

For me, though, Lucario in cool contests. A good combo is extremespeed to be first next appeal, then dark pulse for extra points due to being first.

Just wondering, do they still do extra points for combos like yawn+rest or sunny day+flamethrower in DP? I don't do a lot of contests to know.

I haven't done much of the contests yet, but I have used Swampert for tough and he usually does fairly well.

I have a dragonite I can't get through ultra rank in cool, any suggestions? Moves:

Dragon Dance
Dragon Claw
Hyper Beam
Dragon Rage (or dragon rush, or whatever it is)

It has maxed out coolness sheen. Its the visual part I do bad on.

I will be using "Claydol, Lord of Contests" as soon as I get round to catching one. Thanks again to dmon2 from GameFaqs for sharing this. It wins basically every competition....

I use my Miley (Milotic) of course for Beauty contest, and for Tough I use Metagross. I try something like Iron Defense and Brick Break. And with max sheen for both, I ususally win.

I usually use Shinichiro (my level 56 Luxray) and so far it has won quite a few contests. I overfed him too many poffins though...

I completed my first Master Rank on Diamond only 3 days ago.

It was a Smart contest, I used Libra, my Noctowl.

Moveset:
- Fly
- Reflect
- Confusion
- Recycle

It took me by surprise when I actually won, though. It was a pretty half-arsed attempt in finding a Smart Pokemon.

Roserade is my main pokemon that I used for smart contests.

I have an Ultra ribbon so far so it must be doing something right.

I'm not much of a Contest person, but my extremely tough Machop swept the floor with a Geodude, a Glameow, and a Mime Jr. a few hours ago.

Diamond/Pearl:

Slugma - Tough
Combusken - Beauty
Driftbblim - Smart
Poliwag - Cute
Rattata - Cool

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald:
Claydol. That's it.
