We'll be closing this vote soon, given the urgency of the issue. I'd encourage people who have not yet viewed this issue to please vote as soon as possible. If you'd like to discuss the issue, you can either use this thread, or the discussion page of that wiki link.

If you are having troubles hosting this site, it is very legitimate for you to use Google Ads. It's not like any of you are pocketing any of the money, right? That's what ads are for.

Can someone explain the cons to me? I understand the pros, but I'm finding it hard to understand the cons.

Ads take up space. Some people claim that certain google ads are malicious and misleading. They look ugly.

Other than that I'm in the same boat as you are. :p

I believe the argument against is that Bulbagarden would be making money from other people's work.

Not that it's seen as a problem on pretty much every other non-Wikipedia Wiki.

Wait. Hae the ads been placed yet? Are they pop-ups?

Or is it my computer that's going berzerk?

Because everytime I try to go to Bulbapedia, ads pop out from nowhere, and I am getting freaked out.

If it turns out to be Bulbapedia, I'm changing my vote...which reminds me. When's the vote being closed?

I think it might be your computer, because nothing's popping up on mine.

The ads never make any sense. I mean
Are

If you're going to bump an old topic, try to make sense... Assuming you mean something along the lines of "Ads are bad and wanting them makes no sense", try hosting a website yourself.

I know I had several concerns about the new advertisements and specific events surrounding their implementation, but I chose to voice my opinion by voting against them, not by throwing a tantrum. After seeing them implemented (when I'm not using Firefox, heh heh) I have to agree they are for the better, although I still am not sure if they are for the best.

Although the question was asked two and a half months ago, I'd like to answer Jonah, who was curious of the cons. More specifically, I'd like to do so by posting why I dissented to their implementation.

[*] Prior to the implementation of the ads, there was a fundraiser in which the total amount being asked for was raised no fewer than two times before having that cap removed completely. In what could arguably be seen as the success of such a campaign, why were ads being asked for.

[*]Google ads are keyword based, and as such are not always the best choice for communities. If one is running a site for an MMO, and they use Google ads, they can be guaranteed a number of adverts popularizing and normalizing RMT while sharing links to such services. The particulars of of the Bulbapedia community arguably doesn't have to deal with this particular example, and Google ads can be maintained with a listed of "prohibited ads" but the former still leaves a sour taste in the mouths of some users and the later takes a notable amount of vigilance on the behalf of the admin to counter. I pray we never see the day that a Google advert for Poképorn goes unchecked long enough for it to fall in the hands of this website's younger users.

[*] Several, myself included, questioned the weighting of the votes. While this was later easily understood with further interaction with the community, at face value it seemed fairly dubious. This was a moot point by most means at any rate, because even without the weighting the motion would have passed.

Some might not feel the above are valid concerns; I did, and raised my vote to that extent. As you can tell by my continued use of the site, however, it isn't a big enough issue to deter me away. The community and the site are all pretty solid, and I'm sure even those that would have preferred not to have Google ads are appreciative the issue saw a community vote.

I admit this requires further explanation. The reason why the caps had to be raised was because each time, just one or two donors made a sufficiently large contribution to push us over the cap. In particular one donor who wishes to remain anonymous made a $250 donation. This is not something we can reasonably expect to continue. See for yourself the other large [bp=Bulbapedia:Benefactors]donations[/bp] which have been made.

Well, as a donor, I know that I can't afford to keep giving you guys $100 AUD, hence the one-off, so other sources of advertising is inevitable. And has already happened, so...

How much does Bulba need, per month, to run anyway?

Although, the AUD reached 0.89 USD or so today, so who knows, we just might see 1 AUD = 1 USD in the near future...
