Chikorita's the least effective choice in the early game, since the first two gyms are Flying and Bug, both of which are strong against Grass-types.

I haven't got it, but I played it at GAME today (it was a preview thing xD) I made sure to play up to the bit where you first battle Silver- but play nothing more.

I do seem to recall that once you get the Pokedex, you can trade with D/P/Pt.
