Let me just say I ran into one by PURE luck today at Gamestop PURE LUCK, they had 3 Wii’s and 2 PS3’s so without a doubt I whipped out my charge card, and purchased this bad boy.

Hardware Impressions:

The Playstation 3 is VERY sleek, I love the look, although the thing really IS a fingerprint/dusk magnet, but once I placed it within my home entertainment system, a simple Lysol wipe down was all It took for it to become like new again. Very stylish, and looks not out of place at all amongst my home entertainment.

The controller does feel a bit floaty/cheap…I can’t tell what exactly it is, but something is missing in terms of physics/weight detection. Although I’m sure I’ll get use to it, and the weight leverage was probably designed with the whole SIXAXIS motion in mind, if not, well then lol it feels cheap. I like the control, it feels comfortable, it feels like home almost after I’ve been playing my Wii for long amounts of time. I always loved the Duel Shock design, and while the rumble isn’t there, there wasn’t any rumble in some of my favorite classic games, so I’m not at a huge loss on that. I’ve become quite custom to Super Mario 64 on my VC controller without a rumble feed back…it’s about gameplay, and while rumble does add to some submersive feeling, it doesn’t really make that big a difference to me.
EASY to set up – I mean I simply just had to connect a few simple cords here and there and I was up and ready to go.

Interface:
Oh my god…seeing this interface on your HDTV looks amazingly good, it’s just so stylish I love it – the simplicity and direct sampling of the PSP layout is a welcome, easy to use, easy to navigate. I can say I like the layout’s better compared to the Wii, trust me I’m not holding bias here, It just feels a bit more indepth. Although I suppose the Wii’s aim IS for simplicity, so I suppose it does the job where it’s suppose to. My mom loves playing Donkey Kong, and accesses it easily so kudos to Wii, and its easy to navigate interface. However, I just love the look of the interface.

The Playstation Store:

Eh not really my cup of tea yet…I’m sure Sony has time to fix this, but it was pretty darn slow, and perhaps it’s my router, but the layout is a bit loaded and complex when dealing with the store. I like the Wii’s clean cut in, and out approach with their online store offering.
Resistance:

Overall I’ve come to this conclusion. I own now both a Wii and a Playstation 3. I see them as two completely different game systems, and two totally different approaches to gaming. The Playstation is going for the traditional gamer, while trying to take gaming to the next level plateau in graphics, and yes I’m sorry guys, graphics do matter…nothing will ever beat core gameplay, but I don’t feel there should be a tradeoff, nor is there…third parties like Capcom, Konami, Square Enix have proven time and time again a layer of gloss over the foundation takes nothing away at all.

However, I do feel that the Wii takes gaming, and spins it in a new direction…taking the classic feel out of gaming, while remixing it with a fresh new idea. It’s fun, it’s simple yet complex at the same time. The Wii is without a doubt some of the most fun I’ve had with gaming with my family and friends in A LONG TIME…I mean it’s simply amazing to watch my mom smile while trying to hit a strike down the lane of Wii sports, or my friends getting into a great game of Wii Tenis.

All in all I belive the living room has room for the both of them, and mine has openly welcomed them without the bias of petty fan crap…I mean you’re really only depriving yourself when you chose to not even give a console a spin due to brand loyalty, that’s stupid.

In short I belive gaming has evolved from just gaming. Gaming HAS been extended into media console of sorts, and both consoles are testaments to that. The Wii has the same features as the PS3; browser, picture editing, and even the DVD playback edition next year.

All in all I see a great future for the both of them, and I welcome both with open arms.

Any questions or discussions I'm happy to take.

Whoa, I was expecting this too be a PS3 lovefest, but I must admit this sounds like a non-biased and fair review.

IMO, a PS3 and Wii comparison is as useful as a comparison between chalk and cheese.

They're barely even in the same league - the only real matching point between them is that they're videogame systems. But really, it's like comparing the PS2 to the GBA.

Really, the biggest contention point is the 360. Which does 90% of what the PS3 does and 20% of what it doesn't. The question isn't, would you own a Wii and a PS3, it's "would you own a PS3 and a 360?".

I've had my 360 for half a year now and while it'll never provide me with the same amount of gaming love that the Wii will (My most played games are Nintendo games anyway) it provides me with the gaming that the Wii cannot.

But I don't see any need to own a PS3 as well. Aside from Sony as a company being as loathesome as you can possibly imagine at this point in time, there simply isn't anything unique to the PS3 to make you WANT to have it as well. Least of all games (with exclusive franchises between the two being few and far between, and Sony's hopes lying almost exclusively on MGS and Final Fantasy - games it cannot confirm to keep exclusive).

The sixaxis motion control has done nothing to inspire me that it is anything more than a gimmick tagged on late in the day to try and steal some of Nintendo's thunder. Aside from E3 reports that games utilising it did so badly, I fail to see many uses for it - or many games supporting it that much. It's almost impossible to even try and compete with the Wii remote with the PS3 controller - it's just so limited in comparison, and this will show in games, especially those originally designed with the Wii in mind.

Overall, the biggest benefit that the PS3 has in my mind is Blu-Ray - and I doubt that it'll win the format war anyway so it's not really that important as far as I'm concerned.

I have little doubt in my mind that had you purchased a 360 instead, you'd be replying with the same "I love them both" attitude. You'd also have more and better games to sample, and be considerably better off financially. If you can argue otherwise, i'll be really glad to hear it.

I'm surprised that the ridiculously inflated price of the PS3 isn't more of a turnoff to more people.

It is. The reason PS2 sold so well is because it was affordable.

All those teens and mothers of kids are either going to buy a 360 or a Wii for their children, not spend friggn $600 to buy a videogame machine for their 10 year old son.

The Wii has been selling like hotcakes and sells out of every single shipment, while the 360 is doing phenomenally well this holiday season. Granted the PS3 has shortages, but unless the price is lowered, I don't ever see the PS3 catching up to the 360.

There's some unwritten rule in the videogame industry where you can't be market leader for more than two generations in a row, (Nintendo was for the NES/SNES era, met their downfall for the next two which was led by Sony with Playstation 1 and 2), and now it looks like Microsoft will be the new market leader for the next five years.

It only took Nintendo one mistake to fall from #1 to #3 (sticking with carts for N64), and I assume Sony is going to fall the same way Nintendo did. The PS3 will still sell of course, but it won't be a market leader.

Assuming tradition holds, Microsoft will be the market leader for the next two gens.

From Justin's comments I can say I won't be buying a PS3. I won't pay $600 for a nice looking piece of plastic designed towards technology I don't even use (HDTV). There's nothing there that really grabs my interest certainly no 600 frakking dollars of it.

And I think PS3's downfall will not be a loss in the market, I think it will be Wii and 360 expanding their markets while the PS3 has little if anything market growth.

Nice review. Though I must say that I'm definitely not buying a $600 system for one game that won't even be out for ages. Same reason I haven't bought a 360, it's got one game on it I'll enjoy and it's not even out yet. (FFXIII and Banjo Kazooie 3, btw.)

For me, systems are just the methods for playing the games, and the games come first. Wii's the only system of this gen that's got any games that appeal to me, which is why it's the only one I've gotten.

um I don't care who the market leaders are...

You might not now, but it is important in the long run to regular users. The PSP, for instance, is doing poorly enough that developers willing to create software for it are starting to dry up. A bad market leads to an early death.

That being said, I don't think that will happen to the PS3. Although it might have a slightly shorter lifespan than most consoles due to price alone.

Anyways, if XBOX expands its audience a little more like it's been attempting with Sonic and Rare, I might get one eventually. The reason I didn't get an Xbox 1 is simply because it was geared entirely towards shooters and sports, neither of which I care for. If it becomes more generalized like the Playstations have been, I might get one in a year or so.

I'm definately going to stick with my PS2, though. As it's been said, the only exclusive big-name franchise the PS3 has is Final Fantasy, which is a series whose direction I've been dissapointed with since FFIX.

All i know is that the ps3 is ridiculusly expensive

I think the fact that the Wii is attracting a wide array of people who are not the traditional market for it is going to be a big factor.
I think it'll go down like this:
#1. 360
#2. Wii
#3. PS3
Halo 3 will single-handedly make Microsoft King of Gaming, thereby expanding the Evil Gates Empire.

Agreed, but Halo 3 needs more innovation than Halo 2 had or the series is going to get sequel fatigue. Even fans of the series complained about Halo 2's single new feature of dual wielding. I'm not saying Halo 3 with the single "new feature" of being able to kick someone in the nuts wouldn't sell, but people would problably notice that the series is starting to get stale, and it would make it harder for the franchise if they ever wanted to do a fourth.

I am glad that the 360 seems too be trying to attract more younger gamers with decent "kid" games, such as Pinata and Banjo Kazooie.

It seems, apart from Nintendo, "Video games aren't for kids" is what many companies seem too act like.

The problem is that Viva Pinata, although aesthetically very kid friendly, has gameplay that is very not kid friendly. There's a lot to do in that game with a lot of micromanagement and a lot of variables to keep track of. It's an excellent game but unfortunately, it's target market will be turned off when they actually play it.

Hey I just found out like the PSP the interface changes colors monthly, kinna cool guys. Also the brightness of the menu changes with the time of the day, say it's dark out, the background color will get darker with the time.

Pretty neat :)

Nice, Justin.

The weight of the controller is like that because they removed the Rumble.

The rumble is a simple chip set I think it's a more in line with the SIXAXIS design and potiental motion games, nothing with rumbling.

Anyone see this?

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s PlayStation 3 is already a multimedia powerhouse with advanced processing capabilities as well as support of one of the next-generation digital video disc format. However, Sony is mulling to create a version of the console that would appeal more to those wishing to use the PlayStation 3 not as a gaming machine on the first place, but as a primary video player.

The “media-centric” PlayStation 3 will feature capabilities of consumer electronics devices and will be more focused on digital media content playback, rather than on gaming. Based on claims reportedly made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., PC Watch web-site reports that the PlayStation 3 “media-centric”-edition will feature anti-vibration mechanism on the Blu-ray disc drive, 512MB XDR memory, more advanced power supply unit and two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data.

The third version of the PlayStation 3 will also have a new design that matches other consumer electronics products and is unlikely to be totally similar to the currently sold PlayStation 3 gaming machines. Still, all the games for the PlayStation 3 should play absolutely well on the device.

According to comments reported to had been made by executives of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., the PlayStation 3 game machine is unlikely to be sold by SCEI, but more probably to be supplied by Sony itself under Sony brand.

Given that in the consumer electronics industry manufacturers do not subsidize hardware in hope to compensate their losses by selling many games, it is highly likely that the console, which currently costs $840 to manufacture, will be sold at a premium price. The Japanese web-site noted an executive at SCEI as saying that the price range could be from ¥200 to ¥300 thousand ($1680 to $2520).

Sony PlayStation 3 console is based on the Cell processor developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, the RSX graphics chip by Nvidia Corp. and will be equipped with Blu-ray optical disk drive. There are two versions of the PlayStation console available today: one is equipped with 20GB hard disk drive and priced at $499, another features 60GB hard drive, card reader and some other improvements and is offered for $599.
