Premise
Lifting its setting from the Dark Knight Saga, this roleplay will introduce you abruptly into the chaotic, crime-riddled city of Gotham, less than one year after Bruce Wayne, billionaire orphaned heir to the Wayne Enterprises fortune, returned from an extended overseas "vacation," receiving training from the legendary Head of the Demon, Rā's al Ghūl. Ultimately turning away from the League of Shadows, Wayne chose to don the semblance of his greatest fear: the bat, and combat the organized crime that has dominated Gotham City.
But even the greatest of heroes cannot escape the inevitable, and in this case that inevitability manifested itself in the Law of Escalation: With near-unstoppable Heroes, come near-unstoppable Villains.
To put it plainly, this roleplay takes place within the "Dark Knight Saga" timeline after the first appearances of Batman, but before the plots by Scarecrow and Rā's al Ghūl gripped Gotham. Beyond that established setting, the plot of this roleplay is in no way bound to the plot of the Dark Knight Saga - and in fact, I would prefer to see it deviate from that path greatly.

Rules & Mechanics
1. This roleplay will take the form of one comprehensive thread (i.e. the usual way things are done around here, though I felt the need to clarify as I tend to buck the norm in this regard) comprising the city of Gotham - and only Gotham, as much as reasonably possible. The plot should always be Gotham-centered, though I suppose things don't always have to take place right within the city. In other words, I don't want to be GM'ing an RP that spans the whole globe if I can avoid it.
2. You may take on the role of one established character in the Batman canon, either Hero, Villain, or civilian - your choice (crossover characters, such as Superman, are not allowed, however). You may only control one character at a time. You can switch whenever you'd like, however. The catch? When you give up your character to take over a new one, your old character becomes available for someone else if they want to use them. Note: Character claims are not "final" until I approve them, so even if someone else has already applied for a character, if I haven't approved it yet, you might still have a shot.
3. No non-canonical characters (obviously there will BE some nameless civilains - or even named civilians, who we haven't heard of before, but these should be NPCs, not the character you are directly playing as). I might reconsider this rule at a later date, but don't hold your breath.
4. Tone: All roleplays are a form of fiction, and every work of fiction has its own, distinct tone. The tone of this roleplay is the same as the tone of the Dark Knight film trilogy - as much as is reasonably possible. In other words, serious and (pseudo-)realistic. Some members of Batman's rogues gallery typically have "superpowers" - however, in this roleplay, I will encourage you to come up with a somewhat credible, pseudo-scientific explanation of how they work. "Magic" is not an acceptable explanation. Furthermore, because there is no "magic" in this world, whenever a character exhibits apparently supernatural powers, other characters should react with a realistic, believable sense of surprise.
5. THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT: At the start of the roleplay, there are no Villains. This means that, when you introduce a villain, they have no prior history - at least, no prior history in Gotham. This gives you free reign to flesh out a villain's backstory at your leisure throughout the roleplay. Maybe at the start they haven't even become a villain yet! It's up to you.
6. Standard RP'ing rules apply (no godmodding, powerplaying, bunnying, one-word-posts, etc.)
7. Respect your fellow RP'ers.
8. Master Mew is Gotham's supreme overlord. By stepping into his city, you acknowledge that he reserves the right to retcon, modkill, or ban offending members as he sees fit. You are free to appeal disciplinary actions, but this is by no means a guarantee of reversal.
9. All violations of BMGf rules will be reported.
