Premise
Lifting its setting from the Dark Knight Saga, this roleplay will introduce you abruptly into the chaotic, crime-riddled city of Gotham, less than one year after Bruce Wayne, billionaire orphaned heir to the Wayne Enterprises fortune, returned from an extended overseas "vacation," receiving training from the legendary Head of the Demon, Rā's al Ghūl. Ultimately turning away from the League of Shadows, Wayne chose to don the semblance of his greatest fear: the bat, and combat the organized crime that has dominated Gotham City.

But even the greatest of heroes cannot escape the inevitable, and in this case that inevitability manifested itself in the Law of Escalation: With near-unstoppable Heroes, come near-unstoppable Villains.

To put it plainly, this roleplay takes place within the "Dark Knight Saga" timeline after the first appearances of Batman, but before the plots by Scarecrow and Rā's al Ghūl gripped Gotham. Beyond that established setting, the plot of this roleplay is in no way bound to the plot of the Dark Knight Saga - and in fact, I would prefer to see it deviate from that path greatly.

Rules & Mechanics
1. This roleplay will take the form of one comprehensive thread (i.e. the usual way things are done around here, though I felt the need to clarify as I tend to buck the norm in this regard) comprising the city of Gotham - and only Gotham, as much as reasonably possible. The plot should always be Gotham-centered, though I suppose things don't always have to take place right within the city. In other words, I don't want to be GM'ing an RP that spans the whole globe if I can avoid it.

2. You may take on the role of one established character in the Batman canon, either Hero, Villain, or civilian - your choice (crossover characters, such as Superman, are not allowed, however). You may only control one character at a time. You can switch whenever you'd like, however. The catch? When you give up your character to take over a new one, your old character becomes available for someone else if they want to use them. Note: Character claims are not "final" until I approve them, so even if someone else has already applied for a character, if I haven't approved it yet, you might still have a shot.

3. No non-canonical characters (obviously there will BE some nameless civilains - or even named civilians, who we haven't heard of before, but these should be NPCs, not the character you are directly playing as). I might reconsider this rule at a later date, but don't hold your breath.

4. Tone: All roleplays are a form of fiction, and every work of fiction has its own, distinct tone. The tone of this roleplay is the same as the tone of the Dark Knight film trilogy - as much as is reasonably possible. In other words, serious and (pseudo-)realistic. Some members of Batman's rogues gallery typically have "superpowers" - however, in this roleplay, I will encourage you to come up with a somewhat credible, pseudo-scientific explanation of how they work. "Magic" is not an acceptable explanation. Furthermore, because there is no "magic" in this world, whenever a character exhibits apparently supernatural powers, other characters should react with a realistic, believable sense of surprise.

5. THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT: At the start of the roleplay, there are no Villains. This means that, when you introduce a villain, they have no prior history - at least, no prior history in Gotham. This gives you free reign to flesh out a villain's backstory at your leisure throughout the roleplay. Maybe at the start they haven't even become a villain yet! It's up to you.

6. Standard RP'ing rules apply (no godmodding, powerplaying, bunnying, one-word-posts, etc.)

7. Respect your fellow RP'ers.

8. Master Mew is Gotham's supreme overlord. By stepping into his city, you acknowledge that he reserves the right to retcon, modkill, or ban offending members as he sees fit. You are free to appeal disciplinary actions, but this is by no means a guarantee of reversal.

9. All violations of BMGf rules will be reported.

Example:

Character: Rā's al Ghūl
RP Sample: From Rogues Gallery:
Natalia turned her gaze to the security guard as he stepped over the threshold incredulously, her nervous smile disolving into a sneer as Eliot exited.

"Ma'am, I'm going to need to see what you have in your hands," he said awkwardly; something didn't feel right.

"Of course," she replied curtly, her left hand emerging from behind her back, the blue gem glimmering in the dim lighting.

*CRACK*

The whip flicked out from her other hand without warning, driving the startled, stammering guard reeling backward.

*CRACK*

With an abrupt clang Natalia spun around, driving her heel into the metal door, slamming it shut and jamming the lock.

"I apologize for any inconvenience," she announced calmly, flipping open her clasp and removing a small grappling hook, "but I'm afraid I must be going." Taking aim at a high window, she fired the grapple, shattering the glass as she fastened her goggles around her head, scooping the gem off the glass covered floor and zipping up the wall and clambering out the window onto the roof.

Re: GOTHAM

Character: The Joker
RP Sample: "How dare you!" Disarray yells, pointing back. "I am not that sexy sexy beast Disarray. He may be a dashing rogue, but I would never dream of being him!"
My Favorite Batman Storyline: Lessee...I watched a few clips of the 60s TV show, that was fun. But...I remember I was at a friend's house, and I read this one comic that showed Batman's first adventure, and how he teamed up with Commissioner Gordon. I can't remember it's name, but that was my favorite.

@Grit Accepted!

I couldn't be more confident in your ability to handle the Clown Prince of Crime. :p

Re: GOTHAM (Batman Still Available -- Sign Up Now!)

@Scarlet Flash Sure thing! Reserved.

Still no one wants to be Batman? Are we going to have a Batmanless Gotham? D:

Re: GOTHAM (Batman Still Available -- Sign Up Now!)

*A dark shadow casts across the moon*
"I am... the BatEban..!"

Character: Bruce Wayne/The Batman
RP Sample: Stylo Days: 2D's Day Extract
2D groans.
He pulls the clown mask over his head, as a deflector shield against the world, to try and cure the aching in his brain.
Murdoc and his Tequilas...
He curses quietly to himself, but not in a particularly vengeful way.
He hums a few notes of Stylo, the song they are due to be performing later in the day.
Urf... If him and his new toy don't hurry up, I'm heading to the set without him...
He mutters shallowly.
2D can't drive, so this is a very hollow threat.
He slumped lower into the car seat.
The car itself was some old thing that Murdoc had insisted be put in the video.
He didn't really care for such a thing, and he wondered how many others had been slumped like he was.
This lead 2D to think about what else people could have once done in this car, and that startled him enough to motivate him to sit up.

@JakkuEbansu Accepted! Do the character justice, you have a big cape to fill. :)

Re: GOTHAM (Sign-Ups Open)

Character: Huntress / Helena Bertinelli

RP Sample: "What a dump" Huntress snarled looking at the East End district. "Although it does beat that gala that Nightwing has to attend" Helena could see a group of cars stop. "This seems interesting" Helena watched with keen eyes. She could now see a bunch of guys in suits opening the boot of the cars and picking up guns. "Gala plus guns. Something I should tell Nightwing...now where was that gala" she muttered to herself. "Civic center? Wayne Manor? I guess it could be the Regal Hotel. It doesn't matter, I just want to kick some behind"

Helena shot out a grapple rope via a grapple gun. "Hey lover....care for some dancing. We have a little mob running around with guns" she smiled while talking on a closed circuit radio transmission to her ally.

Re: GOTHAM (Sign-Ups Open)

@Scarlet Flash Accepted! Just remember Nightwing isn't a controllable NPC (beyond occasional, brief appearances) since he's also a playable character.

It was just for the sample.

Re: GOTHAM (One More Villain Needed -- Sign Up Now!)

So do characters necessarily need to follow their characterizations from the movies? I was thinking I'd have a hipster marketing student-turned-drug lord who used to do ballet.

Well, we don't really know the Joker's backstory anyway so you can make it whatever you want - but as far as personality and modus operandi go, I'd prefer no significant changes. After all, if you fundamentally alter the character, why pretend he's still the Joker?

Re: GOTHAM (One More Villain Needed -- Sign Up Now!)

Character: Two-Face
RP Sample:
The curtains open up. The scene is desolation, marred only by the debris of various brightly-colored storefronts, all advertising the ethnic diversity of the city. A cold sun barely manages to peek out past the foreboding layer of dark clouds. It shines a ray of light upon one very tiny pocket of the once-city, and briefly illuminates one hideously gaudy sign. "THE CITY'S FINEST THRIFT SHOP! INSANE LOW PRICES!" the sign declares, begging for attention amidst the other signs. An observer might have been able to see the hidden meaning behind the ray of light, calling it a ray of hope. That observer could not have been more wrong, as there is no meaning to a cold sun. None at all. It was by pure chance that the pile of clothes behind the sign became animated. It was by pure chance that the poltergeist inhabiting this place became bonded to this ordinary pile of clothing. It was by pure chance that it saw the picture of a beautiful woman inside the once-store.

The bright pink picture frame gently nestled the form of an outstandingly gorgeous woman. This perfect artifact of nature was posing ever so slightly, gazing at the camera with a light, cheerful air, sporting a twinkle in her eyes, and wearing a smile on her face that said "Laugh with me, my love! Embrace this wonderful day, my dear!" Hastily scrawled into the upper-right corner was the message - To the love of my life, the sun of my clouds - Jean. The poltergeist stared at this picture. It gave her life meaning. She felt an affinity with this woman, something unnatural yet so perfect. Could this be her? With a startling jolt, she became aware of her own body. Look at this squalor! This was not beautiful at all! She was nothing but a formless pile of clothing. Yet ... this was her body. She longed to be beautiful. Slowly, she learned to give clothing life, to allow it to rise up and assume the form of a beautiful woman, exactly like the one in the picture. Just then, she felt strangely at peace. Everything made sense now - She was that woman, Jean! She was just as beautiful as Jean, there is no reason why she couldn't simply be Jean. And so it was that she adopted that name, and her body changed to fit her name.

Day and night holds no bearing to her, as she has no concept of wasted time. With all the time in the world, what could she do? Through her various wanderings, she became obsessed with searching through ruins for the form of a woman just like herself. She amassed a wide collection of vanity magazines within her body, ranging from lofty makeup magazines to sultry pornographic magazines. Some magazines she looked upon with disdain, such as that trucker magazine with a butch woman on the front. She threw that one on the dusty ground, furious that a woman would be allowed to let her beauty become tarnished. Over time, though, her mind kept going back to this example of un-beauty, and she saw that even this woman was beautiful in her own way. With regret, she went back and picked up this magazine. She promised herself that, if she ever saw this woman, she would help her bring out her inner potential.

Two years passed, and with every passing month, Jean's clothes got more and more frayed and dirty. She tried her best to take care of them, but when you're alone, it's hard to care. It wasn't until a year after she was born that the throes of loneliness really set in. Her magazines of high fashion and glamour no longer served as adequate company. She let her shape sag, not really caring about her appearance. Now, all she wanted to do was to find somebody, and be with that person forever. To know that she would never have to be alone again. She would serve to make that woman as beautiful as she could, to make her into Jean, because she just couldn't be Jean anymore. She wasn't beautiful enough. She finally collapsed, her clothes settling in an untidy pile.
My Favorite Batman Storyline: The Dark Knight. I always love superhero stories that are taken very seriously. And it's all the more perfect that this is based off of TDK, too.

Re: GOTHAM (One More Villain Needed -- Sign Up Now!)

@Garuru Accepted! Very poignant RP sample, left me wanting more. :)

Alright folks, the sign-ups will remain open and the roleplay will begin soon. You will all receive mentions when the Start-Up is posted.

Which Robin would make the most sense in this? 'Cause I want to be Robin.

Which Robin would make the most sense in this? 'Cause I want to be Robin.
Probably Tim Drake. Batman was more reluctant to accept him (which fits this roleplay's theme) and it leaves open the possibility of Dick Grayson appearing as Nightwing.

Would it be inappropriate to have the Jason Todd Red Hood since he was never robin and thus never killed/maimed by the Joker?

You can do it if you think you can explain it in-story. The Joker IS in the rp, so the infamous crowbar scene could happen anyway...

Character: The Riddler

RP Sample: (from X: A Generation of War)
"Normal?" Gideon spoke suddenly, hearing Luna sigh in the cell near his. He spent about four seconds cackling like a maniac, before kneeling down and calling out to her in a whimsical and almost crazed tone. "Oh, oh, yeah, damn straight you're going to die, baby. If this is life for you from now on, what's even the point in living? You're a freak. Far as society is concerned, you don't even deserve to live. Freak. Freaky freak freak. Hey, check out the freak, guys!"

Kelsey, having composed herself, headed over to where Max was, standing beside him with her arms folded. She decided she was going to watch his behaviour for a little while, so that she could tell whether he was capable of being a HESP agent. She glared at him through her sunglasses, refusing to take her eyes off of him. If she was going to be working with someone, she needed to know if they were worthy of her time.
