Despite them pretty much ripping off her death scene in the first film, Gwen Stacy is set to appear in Spider-Man 3. Not only that, but this announcement came with the news that this role has been cast. Who's playing her? Bryce Dallas Howard. As to what her role in the movie will be...I have no idea. With 2 villains, and a possible third...there's no telling WHAT they have planned. But they've confirmed there WILL be a Spidey 4 and 5 (part of Marvel's plans with Hasbro for movie merchandising mentioned those two), so...I've no clue as to what they're setting up. But...discuss. Speculate. Let your minds be consumed by this fact.

Since the actress who plays Mary Jane is leaving after 3, it looks like they're killing off his girlfriends in reverse. If you ask me, they should just end it at three. The only comic book franchise you could squeeze more than 3 movies out of is X-men - and only because you've got 100+ different characters to chose from so it doesn't matter who leaves or stays - you'll be able to find another mutie to replace them.

They're supposedly killing off 2 X-Men in X3, and Vinnie Jones (Juggernaut) has been quoted as saying he's signed on for X4.

But Spider-Man could work as a larger series. He's appeared in over 1000 comic issues and has a rogue's gallery that numbers in the 3-4 dozen range (not to mention Dr. Doom, Hulk, and various other characters he's battled on an irregular basis). But the problem with any of these comics made into movies is that you run into actors who will get sick of the roles, and you're then forced to either re-cast the role, or abandon it. Spidey COULD work as multiple films (and with Venom as the probable second villain, we're looking at Harry's fate still unrevealed). However, I WILL have to kill Sam Raimi if he even VAGUELY mentions the Stacy Twins, or hints at them in ANY way. Horrible idea. On par with cat-Beast.

Yeah, Spidey has a ton of villians. We know we're getting Venom and Harry Osbourne as the Green Goblin. They have established the character of Dr. Connors, who is the Lizard. We also have Mysterio, a guy with a fish bowl head who creates holographic illusions; the Chameleon, who can disguise himself as anyone else; the Kingpin, an overweight business mogul; and of course, the counterpart to the Venom symbiont, Carnage. There are countless others, but this is all I can remember from the cartoon. Some of those are better ideas than the others for a movie. I can't exactly say who I would favor more if they are going on beyond 3. I have certainly never seen a movie made from a comic do so well before. I wouldn't count my eggs before they hatch, though.

I was pretty sure Toby Macguire was leaving after this one too...

What exactly would the plan be when he does? I mean, he's not my favourite actor ever but he's Peter Parker now - if they're killing other characters off 'cause the actors leave, then how exactly do you handle this?

Ben Reily? :p

They may not be killing Mary Jane off. In the comics, she's left a number of times, so they may just do that. As for Tobey Maguire, I haven't heard ANYTHING about him leaving. Not since before Spidey 2 after he suffered a back injury. He seems as committed as Sam Raimi. But we'll see how things play out.

Alright, it was post-Spidey 2 (I think), but look at the date. Not exactly current. I need to hunt down the last thing I heard from him...was just prior to Dunst revealing the Spidey 3 villains.

I only remembered hearing it :p. Had to Google it to actually find some evidence of it being said.

Haven't really been keeping up with it enough to know if he stuck to that or not.

Apparently this is a bigger story than I thought. AOL's carrying this as a major news item.

AOL Article. The article reveals a little of the role Gwen will play, and apparently...she survives the film. This thing's going to be a freaking epic.
