Alright this came up to me recently after watching the newest episode in North America on saturday. (It is the epiosde where Ash faces Lenora for the first time) Lenora refers to Cilan as "connesieur boy" (sorry probably wrong spelling.) Considering they are both Gym leaders shouldn't they know who each other is? I always thought the 8 gym leaders had some kind of Union where they all would meet together or something. Lenora doesn't even recognize him as a fellow gym leader though. This happened a lot with Brock in the Kanto series as well. Many Gym leaders didn't regonize him as a fellow gym leader I would of thought they might be like "Hey Brock/Cilan" and recognized them. It seems like the gym leaders are all seperate and just know they give out a certain badge but don't think about other gym leaders. I guess what is your take on this?

Unlike the games and various manga, the anime had decided to ruin the epic awesomness of the Gym Leaders as sets of 8, as a union of sorts. Gyms in the anime apparently are, random official establishments in which anyone can challenge the leader for a badge. Sadly there are more than 8 gyms per region. So with far more than 8, it's possible that they don't know each other.

Funny enough, somehow Reggie and Paul have the same badges as Ash, the game badges. What happened to the made up gyms?

What he said. Also, trainers can have a maximum of eight badges, because all badge cases have eight cases. The fact that there are more then 8 gyms per region is most evidently shown with Barry's 'extra' badges, Morrison's eigth badge, all those 'extra' badges at the start of EP013, and all of the 'extra' badges in Ash's dream in the Mismagius episode. I hope these two replies have solved your problem.

By logic Paul should have battled Brock, but they didn't recognise each other, so I guess no-one knows each other. Did Brock know Misty?

I don't like the Gameplay and Story Segregation of the gym badges. Even though there are more than 8 badges in the anime, Ash's Gym Badges are always designed to hold the 8 in-game badges. I could understand Kanto, but why, even in Sinnoh, did Barry have an anime-only badge????

Morrison also had an anime-only badge, and so did Otoshi from EP073.

Gary also had the Boulder Badge, and we all know he was ahead of Ash, so he must've met Brock first. Yet Brock acts like nothing when they meet.

Gary had 11 badges. In a badge case too I believe. Lol.

I love how the anime somewhat contradicts it's self with this topic. Badge cases now are made to fit specific badges, yet, they keep making Gyms up. I believe Ash's Sinnoh and Unova cases are made to fit. Was his Hoenn one also?

Anyways, Bulbapedia, like alway, talks greatly about the badge topic. http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Badge

And I'm a girl btw..<.<

Ten, actually. He failed to get the Earth Badge from Viridian, which would have made 11.

Personally, I've wondered what it would be like for a region to have 17 confirmed gyms (one for each type) and possibly require league challengers to win a selected number higher than 8. Each trainer would have a greater amount of choice regarding which gyms they battle in.

I don't even think Gary noticed him at all to tell you the truth. Just like Paul gary's focus is like 99% on Ash.

Also I don't think Brock acted like he knew any of the Kanto gym leaders when he travelled with Ash. I don't think its a big deal, i like that they don't have a union, I don't see a point

Actually, at the end of EP006, Brock says something about Gary when he sees the sign, like "Oh, not Gary AGAIN..." or something like that. Also, it's strange how Gary has the Cascade badge in the sixth slot, which must mean he skipped the Cerulean Gym the first time round, because if he challenged it early on, he would've put the badge in the second slot. Either way, he must have battled Daisy, Violet or Lily, because Misty wouldn't have been there as she's out of the gym from the first episode, but they must have gave the badge away, because they had no Pokemon left (remember in EP007, where they only had a weak Seel).

Perhaps all cases initially have eight slots, as the minumum number of badges to enter the Pokemon League championships is eight badges. The only explanation I can think of is that Gary's badge was a counterfeit.

Oh... *kicks self*.

Actually having 8 like most continuities does give a sense of order and makes how the entire League system works easier to understand and know.

Plus the storytelling possbilities and the fact that Gym Leaders would actually be something special is added. The anime makes Gym Leaders seem like a common thing. =/

The anime Gym Leaders also seemed to be show to more of an actual job, rather then a obligation/membership like it does in the manga. Which I personally think is better then how the manga portrays it.

You think Gary is able to catch badges that is out there from gyms not show in the anime. The regions has more then 8 gyms, but they will only show the 8 gyms in the games.

I never saw the need to have more than eight Gyms, and I still don't now. If they're not gonna show up as a focal point of an episode, what's the point?

I have to agree here with the anime. You know what would be cool? show a non-game oriented gym. In the games I think the gym leaders are special characters. In the anime I wish they showed recognition of each other. It seems like a person just sets up a building and makes it into a gym where they decide what type it is. Although then maybe they talk to the elite 4 or champion to get it aprooved?
