no asking for where to find the stuff mentioned here or links to said stuff please, it is against forum rules.
hacks and fangames. living fanfiction that can be played out like a real game and can vary in quality. there are good ones, bad ones, creepy ones, indecent ones, despite all this, they exist.
translations. a game released only in one or two territories that got translated to english or chinese or some other common language to make the game easier to understand outside of japan/europe. there are a lot of these out there, some of which have since been localized officially even.
whatever the category is, a good game is a good game
my personal favorites are brown/prism,(rip) brutal DOOM, and rockman 4 minus infinity for rom hacks
and fan translations, I personally there is the ones for ace attorney investigations 2 , MOTHER 3, and fire emblem new mystery of the emblem.
I haven't played many fangames, but touhou fangames in RPG maker and the like are generally good
sound off discussion here, but remember the warning in bold at the top of the page at ALL times.

I'm a big fan of spin-offs of the old cult classic indie title Yume Nikki. There are literally scores of them out there just waiting to be played!

OFF fangames like HOME and Continue Stop Rise are also made of pure awesome.

Another one to mention is an anti example in the more direct final fantasy 6 translation
It sucked the games appeal dry by being to faithful to the japanese version
