So I saw there was a thread for Kuroko no Basket and there's also a thread for Free, so I thought why not make one for Haikyuu since it's such an awesome anime xD

for those that don't know Haikyuu follows the story of Shoyo Hinata a short orange haired boy who after seeing a volleyball tournament on tv featuring a guy just as short as him known simply as the "Small Giant" decides to take on volleyball himself. His dreams are cut short because his middle school when he loses against another team and forms a rivalry with that team's setter, Tobio Kageyama. And so Hinata heads to high school with the dream of playing volleyball for Karasuno, only to find out that the rival he wants to defeat so much is now going to be one of his teammates.

And so starts the story of Hinata, Kageyama and the rest of the Karasuno team as they play, grow and become stronger while facing anyone that comes their way.

So I think that summary sucked, but overall I really love this series and I actually ended up reading the manga because of it and I think it's a really cool sport manga, it's not too out there like a lot of sport series tend to be and the characters are fun and they get tons of developtment both in and out of matches.

So, thoughts?

I have to agree Haikyuu! is a pretty good sports anime. The characters all balance each other and make a really good team.

Though, from what I'm seeing, things might get boring if they simply participate in the tournament to win. There needs to be something more personal, whether it's on the individual level or on team level. Hinata himself doesn't seem to have any personal problems to deal with (it was initially Kageyama, but they're on the same team now lol). The "Small Giant" hasn't been mentioned that much despite being the legendary player of Karasuno history. Kageyama's conflict with his middle school teammates was already half resolved in a previous match (though how he deals with his senpai I haven't seen yet). The rest of the teammates, while all great characters, lack personal reasons for participating in the games. I like the manager, but there isn't anything special about her yet.

One of the reasons I enjoyed Kuroko no Basket was because even though it was a sports anime, they didn't dedicate everything to training and playing basketball - they went deep in personal and gave Kuroko a goal (to deliver the true meaning of victory to his Teiko teammates a.k.a. defeating all the members of the Generation of Miracles). They're trying to show what 'winning' really means. Kagami may be doing all the work, but Kuroko is doing his job as a protagonist and progressing the story in the right direction.

Also, when compared to Yowamushi Pedal, the characters in Haikyuu! are touched on rather lightly (though this may change as the story progresses). In Yowapeda, almost every character has a personal backstory provided in varying depths and they all connect with their competitive cycling. While Onoda is the protagonist, the story doesn't revolve around him, but rather more on a team level with even the rivals having personal backstory.

I know both YowaPedal and KnB had almost 50 episodes dedicated for their two seasons, so they had plenty of time to show backstory regarding the characters. Since it's only the first season of Haikyuu!, I guess it's too early to say anything about backstory and character development. But I do hope they touch more on Hinata's past and/or his idol the "Small Giant". It would also be nice to see back story on the teammates, too, such as Tanaka XD.

Well I do have to agree that when it comes to character developtment Haikyuu or at least the part the series is in right now focuses more on the actual tournament of things. However, and I'll try not to spoil too much xD it does get better considering what I've read from the manga. Particularly this match will show a lot of developtment for all the characters on both sides.

Unfortunately while I can assure you the characters and their personalities will get developtment that probably won't be till season 2 xD cause I can assure you that the rest of the season will be the one match against Seijoh. On that note...

Hinata has a boring average life with nothing but what we know xD everything that has been revealed about him is pretty much the only thing interesting in his past. Tanaka's life will get some more attention though.

D: Hopefully, Kageyama had a much, er, interesting life than Hinata to talk about... XDD

I feel bad for Kageyama having to sub out, but at least I'll get to see Sugawara in play next episode :3

Yeah. I'm surprised they showed Oikawa in more detail - on how he analyzes and what his skills are compared to Kageyama. I wonder if he'll continue being an important character after the match is over.

Suga, though XD everyone on tumblr was crying over Suga-mama finally subbing in. The Haikyuu fandom must really like him.

Well, Suga is pretty awesome xD I dont'know why but I really liked his character (and Daichi for that matter) from the moment he was introduced.

Also your wish on them focusing on Tanaka was sort of granted in this ep : p

They both support the team like they are everyone's mom and dad Suga and Daichi are married, so I find them really cool :)

Yeah, Tanaka getting more focus was great.

I'm crying Suga mama is so precious he's so sweet and I like how he's also got determination to remain on the court *sobs and joins the Sugawara fandom*

The new manager is so cute! It is pretty hilarious whenever she makes a comment and then suddenly feels ashamed for judging people too quickly. As for the episodes themselves... Too much hyper screaming and hyper activity though XD

Hitoka's a nice breath of fresh air, to be honest. Ep03 was better for having her as the focus for a while. I'm not a huge fan of all the screaming either, but it has to be said that the unique character designs make up for it. I mean, there's a bit of weirdness in there, but at least it's not reverting to the usual bright blue hair thing

Oh yeah, and if I'm not much mistaken, her poster translates as "We are never content with what we are"

Halfway through Ep09, and I've got to say, Hinata's really beginning to get on my nerves with his hollering about being better. His attitude right now is all about his own glory, frankly, and I wish someone would drive that into his skull. I guess it's especially irritating since Kageyama's arc has all been about him learning to be a team player, something Hinata is only just right now

I think it makes sense. I mean Hinata's a guy that spent a good part of his life wishing that he could be a great player and he's finally starting to gain that confidence. That's a pretty good example of what happens when a player gets a little too confident in themselves xD but I think he does care for the team a lot he just wants to be better because he feels that if he's better the team'll be better.
