As I said in the other thread (for a completely different topic about the TCG), I haven't been to a tournament since Holon Phantoms.

It used to be, back in the day, you'd get a sealed box for winning a prerelease. Then they made it half a box and a trophy.

But today, winners and losers and middlers all got the same prize--a stack of deck protectors. What the hell? Regular tournaments have prizes, so what's so different about prereleases now?

Stupidness happened. Now Prereleases are just "fun chances to get the cards 1-2 weeks before other people do." Honestly, who gives a shit? OH I'M COOL BECAUSE I HAVE THE NEW CARDZ A WEEK BEFORE YOU DO. I mean, I go to them anyway, but only because it's cheaper than just going out and buying a bunch of packs. And you get the promo card and sleeves, and it's a chance to trade.

And they are fun... kinda. But it's mostly just cost-efficient when a new set comes out, and if you want to sell the cards, they generally go for a lot more than they will once the set's released. If you have predictions about what will be good, you can trade for those cards for not much before other people realize they're good. There are a lot of reasons to go, but the prizes aren't one of them.

See, I always had the opposite reaction--prereleases were always WAY more fun for me than regular tournaments, probably because everyone was on equal footing when they set foot in the door.

I imagine what happened was mostly cost-cutting, and the "serious tournament player" crowd complaining that winners in pre-releases (which are significantly more luck based than normal tournaments) were getting prizes on a similar level to them.

Cost cutting? Boxes are something like a hundred bucks, while the deck sleeves are about five each set...it'd only take twenty people to make that totally not to their advantage.
