In case you haven't heard the news, Harry Shearer has decided to quit The Simpsons (Harry Shearer quits The Simpsons | TV Tonight) not long after Fox decided to renew the show for two more seasons. He voiced characters such as Ned Flanders (two time widower), Waylon Smithers, Lenny Leonard, Mr. Burns and a number of others. So what do you think will happen: Will all of Harry Shearer's characters be retired? Will they get a new voice actor? Or a bit of both? And what do you think will be the future of the show, which is the longest running sitcom in American television history (by the number of episodes).

I think The Simpsons will end after Season 28 because I don't think many people will watch it with around a quarter of the characters being retired. So what is your opinion on this?

They could quite easily get in replacement voices, that may mean taking on 4 or so people to do all his voices, but those four people may be a lot cheaper if they haven't done any professional voice acting before. When one of the voices of the Simpson's household wants to get out, then they may have a bigger problem.

Simpsons without Smithers. That I just cannot comprehend.

I'm sure they will find a replacement voice actor or two but it won't be the same. It happened with the Muppets--Jim Henson passed on and someone else had to take over as Kermit's voice--so it will probably be the exact same here. However, the voices might be a bit off, which might put long-time fans off.

As for the show itself: I don't see this as a good sign. We've got one cast member who decided to leave; who's to say that some of the others won't follow? Even long time fans of the show seem to be getting exhausted by this point, so it might be a good idea for Fox to let the next two seasons be the last.

There is an article from the BBC about the man who could replace Harry Shearer (The man who can replace Harry Shearer on The Simpsons - BBC Newsbeat). I don't think it would work though. I do , but it made me remember the episode "Homer to the Max" in which Ned Flanders (who was voiced in the episode by Karl Wiedergott) said that they can replace the actors and no one can tell the difference (which was in reference to the animated series "The Laughter Family").

They are apparently in talks of negotiating a new contract for him so he could still change his mind. If not they have already said they'd just replace him with another voice actor. I don't think it would really matter too much. I'm sure they'd hire someone who could do a good job so meh. As far as Harry Shearer goes I think the Simpsons might just be better off without him. He's slagged the show off on more than one occassion so he clearly doesn't love the show anymore. Give his job to someone who does, I say.

It looks like someone has filed an audition to replace Harry Shearer (even though this particular voice actor can't voice Principal Skinner). Brock Baker auditions for Harry Shearer characters | TV Tonight (note that the YouTube video is embedded in the article, or go to 14 Simpsons Impressions (Harry Shearer Characters) - YouTube to see the video). Go Brock!

Holy crap, Brock Baker is auditioning? I've seen his stuff before, that'd be awesome... though I do wish that The Simpsons would just end already.
